The peptide and GLP-1 conversation has reached a fever pitch. Growth-hormone-releasing peptides are being marketed as longevity tools, GLP-1s are being treated as a default rather than a last resort, and a wellness aesthetic of higher IGF-1, more muscle, and less fat is being sold as the route to a longer life. In this episode, I sit down with Dr Valter Longo, Professor of Gerontology at USC and Director of the USC Longevity Institute, to look at what the data actually says. Valter developed the Fasting-Mimicking Diet, has led foundational work on the growth hormone, IGF-1, insulin, and TOR axis across yeast, mice, and humans, and runs non-profit longevity foundation clinics in Europe and the US. He calls himself the anti-biohacker and makes the case using the totality of evidence rather than the loudest claim. What we cover: The peptide boom and why every line of evidence cuts the other way The body composition reality of GLP-1s after 3 to 4 years The optimal IGF-1 range and how to land there with food and timing The Fasting-Mimicking Diet across more than 47 clinical trials, including the biological-age reduction studies The Harvard plant-versus-animal protein data, properly read A grounded case against ketogenic patterns for longevity and what to eat instead If this conversation lands, a quick rating or review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify makes a real difference. GLP-1s are the fastest growing drug trend in health right now. But a 30-year fasting study says there's something every user needs to know before their next dose. Dr. Valter Longo has spent 30 years studying aging and longevity at USC, running over 40 clinical trials on what actually makes people live longer and healthier. What he found challenges almost everything the wellness industry is pushing right now, from 16-hour fasting windows to high-protein diets to GLP-1 drugs. In this episode of Habits and Hustle, Dr. Longo breaks down the science behind the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD), why 12 hours of fasting beats 16, and what centenarians around the world actually eat. He also shares his latest research on cancer, Alzheimer's, and why your body already has the tools to heal itself if you stop getting in its way. It's time to ask the right questions about the hottest longevity trends that are costing people more than helping them. What's Discussed: (2:01) Who is Dr. Longo and the training behind his research. (3:18) The hypothesis behind why we should be fasting differently. (5:39) What a Fasting Mimicking Diet actually contains and why. (7:27) The difference between the longevity diet and the FMD. (8:30) Why 12 hours of fasting beats 16 every time. (11:18) The hidden risks of skipping breakfast nobody talks about. (15:47) How the FMD resets your body's locked-in weight. (21:12) How the "recipe" behind the FMD was built over 20 years. (29:51) Why the cancer, Alzheimer's, and diabetes versions of FMD are all different. (35:11) The trial showing nearly double survival rates in cancer patients. (38:04) Dr. Longo’s real take on protein and why less may mean longer life. (51:24) How often you should actually do the FMD. (53:08) What the research says about fasting and women. (56:40) Dr. Longo’s honest breakdown of GLP-1 risks and side effects. (1:16:19) Findings beyond fasting that slow aging. (1:23:21) The four things the FMD triggers that nothing else does. (1:36:31) Why nutrition beats exercise for longevity and why that's not the full story. Thank you to my sponsors!Kion: Visit getkion.com/habits for 20% off. Dr. Valter Longo explains how fasting-mimicking diets make cancer cells vulnerable to treatment while protecting healthy tissue, plus the clinical evidence, safety protocols, and why oncologists remain skeptical. Dr. Valter Longo, author of "Fasting Cancer," breaks down decades of research on using fasting-mimicking diets (FMD) alongside conventional cancer therapies. Cancer cannot be starved but it can be metabolically weakened by limiting resources which a the same time protects healthy cells. A process known as differential stress resistance. We cover: the mechanism behind why this works, clinical trial results in triple-negative breast cancer and other aggressive cancers, the surprising data on weight loss and cachexia, BMI cutoffs and safety protocols, how to approach your oncologist, prevention versus treatment applications, and the cutting-edge "escape pathway" research that could transform personalized cancer treatment. Dr Longo addresses the elephant in the room: why, despite promising results in both mouse models and human trials, this approach faces massive institutional and regulatory barriers to becoming standard of care. Practical, evidence-based information for patients, caregivers, and anyone interested in the intersection of nutrition and cancer biology. 🌐Links in this video Create Cures Foundation https://createcures.org/ - Dr Longo organization in the US The Valter Longo Foundation https://www.fondazionevalterlongo.org/en/ - Dr Longo's organization in Italy and rest of the world Dr Longo's website https://valterlongo.com/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/profvalterlongo/ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/prof_valterlongo/ Fasting Mimicking Diet company Prolon https://prolonlife.com/ *Qitone* (10% off: HEALTH10) https://tidd.ly/4jGklry Qitone Esters Powder Seeking Health supplements: 10% discount code Richard10 https://crrnt.app/SEEK/-dm0MyrQ, Histamine Nutrients https://crrnt.app/SEEK/EpM7paAO AX3 Life Astaxanthin 20% discount code MODERN20 https://tinyurl.com/2t3w26nw https://www.choosemuse.com Stemregen 15% discount Code MODERN https://tinyurl.com/45z968yr (Only available in the US) Renue by Science all 10% discount with code MHS https://renuebyscience.com/ Nuchido Time+ 20% discount of first purchase with code MODERN20 https://nuchido.com/MODERN If you would like to support our channel please consider signing up on patreon https://patreon.com/ModernHealthspan You can also find us on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/c/modernhealthspan
In this episode of the Ayık Kafa podcast, Prof. Valter Longo, a renowned researcher specializing in aging and longevity, discusses his groundbreaking work on the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD). Through decades of research, he developed the FMD as a clinically tested, five-day protocol designed to simulate the biological benefits of water-only fasting, such as improved metabolism, cellular repair, and the activation of stem cells, while minimizing the risks and discomforts typically associated with a strict fast. Longo contrasts water-only fasting with the FMD, emphasizing that water-only approaches can be difficult to follow and potentially unsafe without professional supervision, especially for individuals on certain medications or with specific health conditions. With carefully selected, plant-focused ingredients and precisely calibrated nutrient levels, the FMD helps users transition into a “fat-burning” mode while still supplying key nutrients. He also highlights the importance of a balanced, pescetarian-based “Longevity Diet,” combined with moderate exercise and limited eating windows (about 12 hours daily) to support long-term health. Whether someone’s goal is to prevent diabetes, reduce cancer risks, or simply maintain vitality, Dr.Longo believes that nourishing the body with the right foods and mindful fasting holds significant promise for extending both lifespan and healthspan. #EsraÇavuşoğlu #AyıkKafa #ElevatingLifeEvolvingHealth #Longevilab #profvalterlongo #longevitydiet #fastingmimickingdiet Prof. Valter Longo: Website: https://valterlongo.com/biography/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/prof_valterlongo/ 00:00-2:50 Dr. Longo’s early interest in aging. He explains how he began researching longevity during his second year in college and later joined Roy Walford’s lab at UCLA to study calorie restriction and genetics. 2:50-4:54 Dr.Longo's method of addressing diseases like cancer and diabetes through diet. 4:54-6:57 Differences between water fasting, intermittent fasting, and FMD. 6:57-10:37 The fact that FMD accelerates fat burning, increases energy expenditure, and activates stem cells for regeneration. 10:37-13:57 Clinical findings on how FMD reduces insulin resistance, lowers A1C levels, and decreases people's dependence on diabetes medications. 13:57-18:27 FMD in cancer research. Longo explains how FMD can protect healthy cells, make cancer cells more vulnerable to therapy, and maintain muscle mass when done correctly. 18:27-21:49 The relationship between protein intake and longevity. The potential long-term health risks of excessive animal protein intake and the longevity benefits of a pescatarian diet and plant based diet. 21:49-26:57 The relationship between aging and natural selection. The importance of treatment over analysis of disease. The contribution of FMD to natural repair. 26:57-31:28 Daily diet and time-restricted eating. Explanations of the Longevity Diet, 12-hour eating windows, and how fasting for 16 hours or more can lead to increased health risks in the long term. 31:28-36:34 Avoiding water-only fasting pitfalls. Ayık Kafa podcast’in 55. bölümünde, yaşlanma ve longevity üzerine uzmanlaşmış dünyaca ünlü araştırmacı-biyolog Prof. Valter Longo, Açlığı Taklit Eden Diyet (Fasting Mimicking Diet/FMD) üzerine yaptığı çığır açan çalışmaları anlatıyor. There were two reasons why Dr. Valter Longo was featured so prominently in my longevity book Evigt Ung (2022). First, if you had to name a single scientific thread running through the history of longevity research, calorie restriction is hard to beat. And few have done more to modernize and translate that insight into real-world practice than Longo. Second, I hold Valter Longo in the highest regard. I've tried his Fasting-Mimicking Diet (FMD), I’ve followed his work on The Longevity Diet, and I find his scientific contributions both rigorous and unusually translational. He doesn’t just publish papers - he builds systems, tests interventions in clinical trials, and tries to implement science into healthcare. In this conversation, we cover the science, history, and application of fasting, nutrition, and longevity - including new work on cancer, metabolism, and organ regeneration. We also discuss the philosophical and political obstacles that stand in the way of real change. What you'll learn in this episode: ✅ The story of Longo’s early music career - and why he left it to study aging. ✅ How calorie restriction shaped modern longevity science. ✅ Why Biosphere 2 and Roy Walford's work was both inspiring and cautionary. ✅ The origins and mechanisms of the Fasting-Mimicking Diet. ✅ What Longo learned about autophagy, stem cells, and organ regeneration. ✅ Why protein intake before and after age 65 should be treated differently. ✅ What the media and doctors get wrong about obesity, food, and metabolism. ✅ The dangers of high-protein and ketogenic diets. ✅ Why Longo is deeply skeptical of TRT, growth hormone, and biohacking shortcuts. ✅ How fasting can enhance cancer treatment - and why Longo wrote his new book Fasting Cancer. ✅ Why we need a new kind of “digital school” for lifestyle medicine. 🚀 Special offer for our LEVITY audience: Join Vitalism today and receive a 30% discount on your membership using the code LEVITY at checkout. https://www.vitalism.io/membership 🚀 Show notes for this episode will be available soon after this airs.
