Our topic in this episode is progress with ending aging. Our guest is the person who literally wrote the book on that subject, namely the book, “Ending Aging: The Rejuvenation Breakthroughs That Could Reverse Human Aging in Our Lifetime”. He is Aubrey de Grey, who describes himself in his Twitter biography as “spearheading the global crusade to defeat aging”. In pursuit of that objective, Aubrey co-founded the Methuselah Foundation in 2003, the SENS Research Foundation in 2009, and the LEV Foundation, that is the Longevity Escape Velocity Foundation, in 2022, where he serves as President and Chief Science Officer. Dr. de Grey is a Fellow of both the Gerontological Society of America and the American Aging Association, and sits on the advisory boards of numerous scientific journals and research organizations. He is a prolific speaker who regularly presents at conferences and events world-wide. Dr. Michael Rose, Ph.D. ( https://www.faculty.uci.edu/profile/?facultyId=5261 ) is the Director of the Network for Experimental Research on Evolution (NERE), and Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Irvine, where his main area of work over the years has been the evolution of aging. He received his PhD from the University of Sussex in 1978. In 1991, Dr. Rose published seminal work per his text 'Evolutionary Biology of Aging' exploring a view of the subject based on antagonistic pleiotropy, the hypothesis that aging is caused by genes that have two effects, one acting early in life and the other much later. The genes are favored by natural selection as a result of their early-life benefits, and the costs that accrue much later appear as incidental side-effects that we identify as aging. Dr. Rose’s laboratory has conducted the longest-running artificial selection experiment designed to test the theory of antagonistic pleiotropy using Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) bred for longevity by collecting eggs from the longest-lived flies in each generation. The experiment has run since 1981, and has produced flies with quadruple the original life span. In 1997, Dr. Rose was awarded the Busse Research Prize by the World Congress of Gerontology. Why Hasn't There Been A Moonshot For Longevity Yet? Traditionally, the Far East has been slower to embrace longevity research despite factors like respect for the elderly, demographic challenges, and technological prowess. Recently, this mindset might be changing, and if so, it could pave the way for a significant initiative akin to the Apollo project. One hurdle in the West is the centralization of science funding. Public officials act based on a desire for re-election and public opinion, but the public has a presumption against new technology. The solution could be more independent science funding, such as VitaDAO, and more “direct democracy,” such as citizen science. Aubrey's innovation and Bryan's practical focus signify the diverse strategies required for advancement, emphasizing the integration of discovery, clinical application, and societal acceptance of mainstream longevity technologies. "A large part of it is simply learned helplessness, as in like, we've been terribly aware of aging since the beginning of civilization and we have been completely unable to do anything about it. So we have simply developed these ways to put it out of our minds and get on with our miserably short lives and made the best of it, rather than being preoccupied with this terrible thing that's going to happen to us." On this episode of HYPERSCALE, I am joined by Aubrey de Grey, a world-famous transhumanist, writer, and biomedical gerontologist who has been researching the medical answer to aging in humans for over 30 years. He currently serves as President and Chief Science Officer at Longevity Escape Velocity Foundation. Aubrey notes that now that we have an actual plan to address aging, through tangible, tested medical science, we can begin to tackle and hopefully erode this entrenched learned helplessness surrounding the supposed inevitability of aging. "Because this is coming from investors more than from donors." Still, the fact that there is a greater number of people that are interested in longevity and the future of the human body bodes well for a future free of death. This episode will take you through Dr. Aubrey de Grey’s Seven Pillars of aging, the research that he's currently doing, his opinion on biological age, AGEs and the different sources, and the impact of growth hormone on biological age. Who is Dr. Aubrey de Grey? Aubrey de Grey is an English author and biomedical gerontologist. He is the Chief Science Officer of the SENS Research Foundation and VP of New Technology Discovery at AgeX Therapeutics, Inc. He is the editor-in-chief of the academic journal Rejuvenation Research, author of The Mitochondrial Free Radical Theory of Aging and co-author of Ending Aging. He is known for his view that medical technology may enable human beings alive today not to die from age-related causes. He is also an amateur mathematician who has contributed to the study of the Hadwiger–Nelson problem. His research focuses on whether regenerative medicine can prevent the aging process. He works on the development of what he calls "Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence" (SENS), a collection of proposed techniques to rejuvenate the human body and stop aging. To this end, he has identified seven types of molecular and cellular damage caused by essential metabolic processes. SENS is a proposed panel of therapies designed to repair this damage. De Grey is an international adjunct professor of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, the American Aging Association, and the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies. Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 106, originally published in September 2012. Dr. Aubrey de Grey, a biomedical gerontologist, joins Jason Hartman on this episode to discuss how close we're getting to finding the proverbial Fountain of Youth. Dr. de Grey explains that the aging process is simply the collection of early stages of the illusion of old age, i.e. cell damage and loss. He said the accumulation of aging side effects leads to the diseases and conditions of old age that we do not notice during younger ages. He describes the human body as a machine, albeit a very complicated and complex machine, and therefore, it should come as no surprise that the body breaks down over time. Dr. de Grey and the SENS Foundation have a plan to repair various areas of cell damage and cell loss through processes such as stem cell replacement therapies to slow the aging process. Dr. de Grey talks about the science, the research, the obstacles and the funding of this important work. He assures us that once this work is up and running, it will be the real deal allowing people to look and feel younger, but he stresses that this would be preventative care. Jason and Dr. de Grey also address the implications of slowing the aging process on the world population, the age to which people continue to work, pensions, and our carbon footprint. Dr. Aubrey de Grey is a biomedical gerontologist based in Cambridge, UK and Mountain View, California, USA, and is the Chief Science Officer of SENS Foundation, a California-based 501(c)(3) charity dedicated to combating the aging process. He is also Editor-in-Chief of Rejuvenation Research, the world's highest-impact peer-reviewed journal focused on intervention in aging. He received his BA and Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in 1985 and 2000 respectively. His original field was computer science, and he did research in the private sector for six years in the area of software verification before switching to biogerontology in the mid-1990s. His research interests encompass the characterisation of all the accumulating and eventually pathogenic molecular and cellular side-effects of metabolism ("damage") that constitute mammalian aging and the design of interventions to repair and/or obviate that damage. He has developed a possibly comprehensive plan for such repair, termed Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence (SENS), which breaks aging down into seven major classes of damage and identifies detailed approaches to addressing each one. A key aspect of SENS is that it can potentially extend healthy lifespan without limit, even though these repair processes will probably never be perfect, as the repair only needs to approach perfection rapidly enough to keep the overall level of damage below pathogenic levels. Dr. de Grey has termed this required rate of improvement of repair therapies "longevity escape velocity". Dr. de Grey is a Fellow of both the Gerontological Society of America and the American Aging Association, and sits on the editorial and scientific advisory boards of numerous journals and organizations. Dr. Aubrey de Grey is a biological gerontologist on a crusade to defeat aging. He thinks we are within a couple of decades of rejuvenation medicine capable of adding another 30 years to human lifespan, proposing that the first person to live to 1,000 years old may already be alive today. In the field of longevity science, there are a few roadblocks, but the biggest one is funding. They discuss why it isn't a higher priority for average people to further this research.
