  • RELOAD: Technology and Being Human with Arianna Huffington

Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova. This week I'm replaying a conversation with a guest I was so honored to have on the show. Arianna Huffington is an author, mother, and businesswoman, most notably known as the co-founder and former editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post. She is also the founder and CEO of Thrive Global. Most recently, Arianna has written Thrive and The Sleep Revolution . But what you may not know about Arianna is that she has a Master's Degree in Economics from Cambridge and was a candidate for California governor. She's been named one of the Most Influential Women in Media and one of the Most Powerful Women in Business. THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… those hesitant about the future. TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… we're at a very interesting time in history – one that is currently being shaped in new ways every day. The next 20 years won't look anything like today. But of course, 20 years ago doesn't look anything like today either. We cannot predict what the future holds, but as Arianna says, we're at an inflection point. Careers are no longer linear. Passion and purpose have stronger meanings than ever before, and change is happening faster than humans can keep up. Arianna is concerned about our addiction to devices because data shows it makes us less empathetic. More and more people are ditching devices for real connection, which means putting phones away for dinners and seeing friends in person instead of over a video call. Arianna calls this "thrive mode." WHAT I LOVE MOST… as I've gotten older, I've realized that giving back and reflecting on my life is more important than I ever thought. In a tech-consumed world, Arianna warns that we need balance. The interconnectedness we appear to have doesn't hold weight compared to investing in relationships. Giving back and providing value is what gives us a full life. • Episode 37: Arianna Huffington on the founding of The Huffington Post, why entrepreneurs need to get better sleep, and what led her to launch Thrive Global, her startup focusing on the health and wellness space.

When Arianna Huffington co-founded The Huffington Post in 2005, it created a blueprint for a new kind of digital media company at a time news and social conversation were rapidly migrating from traditional to online media outlets. That success led to a $315 million acquisition by AOL, with Huffington remaining as President and Editor in Chief of The Huffington Post Media Group. Five years later, she would start Thrive Global, which helped major companies and their employees build healthy habits through inspirational storytelling and actionable steps to help navigate a stressful world with greater resilience. Huffington's fascinating backstory is as compelling as her gifts for storytelling. She was born in Greece, but moved to the UK at 16, speaking virtually no english. She earned acceptance to Cambridge, one of the UK's most prestigious universities, where she became a star debater. A prolific author, she penned numerous bestsellers; hired a young Van Jones as her campaign manager in a 2003 bid for California governor against Arnold Schwarzenegger; and then launched her successful media career. Huffington talks to Rich and Gianni about meeting Rich and KD for the first time, and how her unsuccessful campaign for governor led her to the insights that fueled the success of The Huffington Post. She also shares how her relentless entrepreneurial work ethic led to burnout and a 2007 incident that made her realize her work habits were hazardous to her health. The incident inspired the formation of Thrive Global.

  • Episode 128: Arianna Huffington

My guest today is the founder and CEO of Thrive Global, Arianna Huffington. Throughout the past decades, Arianna has become a prominent voice focused on media, politics, and well-being as the founder of both The Huffington Post and Thrive Global. She’s written 15 books, most recently Thrive, The Sleep Revolution, and Your Time to Thrive, and is one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People. Since our work overlaps, we had a thoughtful conversation about ending the burnout crisis, improving our well-being, and changing human behavior for this podcast episode. The 5 questions I ask in this episode: You’ve been a public figure since the 1970s appearing on shows, writing columns and books, and then eventually launching the Huffington Post media company. Even your new company, Thrive Global, is partially a media company. What was the inspiration that originally led you to establish a media career and when did you know that you could be successful? As the CEO of Thrive Global with over 100 employees, how have you been able to manage your own well-being while leading others? My dad has always said “you have to walk before you run” and I say “small steps before big leaps”, which you sum up as taking “Microsteps”. What are some Microsteps people can start taking that will lead to positive health and well-being outcomes? Last year, both of our firms released research. Your Thrive Global survey found that 75% of employees feel overwhelmed and less productive while remote working during Covid and our study with Oracle found that 78% of workers said Covid negatively impacted their mental health. During such a difficult time, what can individuals and organizations do to be more resilient? What’s your best piece of career advice? • Arianna Huffington: Microsteps and Rituals to Help You Thrive #136

In times of uncertainty, anxiety and stress, taking care of your wellbeing is more important than ever and no one knows this better than my guest on today’s episode. Arianna Huffington is author and businesswoman who founded the original ‘internet newspaper’, The Huffington Post. She’s also one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World and on Forbes’ Most Powerful Women list. After collapsing at her desk from sleep deprivation and exhaustion in 2007, Arianna became more passionate about the connection between wellbeing and performance. She therefore launched a company called Thrive Global with a mission of ending the stress and burnout epidemic by offering individuals, companies and communities sustainable, science-based solutions to wellbeing. Arianna and I share a desire to show millions of people globally that habit change and healthy living doesn’t have to be hard. We are both passionate that tiny ‘microsteps’ that we can all take each day, can have a dramatic impact on our health and the quality of our lives. Arianna talks me through her Thrive app, which is like a ‘health coach in your pocket’ and how it uses the concept of ‘microsteps’ to show that behaviour change doesn’t have to be a huge commitment. Small things you can do that, if regular and consistent, will add up to significant and lasting benefits. We discuss the idea of ‘compassionate directness’ as a way of resolving tensions both at home and at work. Arianna shares her wisdom on sleep, motherhood, on creating boundaries when working from home, and on having rituals to mark the end of the day. We also speak about the importance of solitude and discuss how modern life is sending many of us back to ancient wisdom and texts such as the Bhagavad Gita. This conversation is full of brilliant tips and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
