- The Art of Wedding Planning for Women Who Want Something Meaningful with Priya Parker (Repost)
Wedding culture can make so many women feel like they’re producing a performance instead of preparing for a marriage. Between family expectations, social media pressure, people-pleasing, decision fatigue, and endless opinions, it’s easy for women to lose confidence in themselves during a season that’s supposed to feel meaningful. This conversation with Priya Parker completely reframed the way I think about weddings, relationships, community, and gathering. Priya is the author of The Art of Gathering and one of the most thoughtful voices on human connection, conflict resolution, and meaningful community. Together, we explore how women can approach wedding planning with more intention, self worth, confidence, and authenticity — instead of getting swept away by perfectionism or tradition for tradition’s sake. We talk about the emotional side of weddings that nobody really prepares women for: navigating boundaries with family, staying grounded in your values, managing conflict, and creating a celebration that actually reflects who you are as a couple. This episode isn’t just about weddings. It’s about identity, womanhood, mental health, relationships, and staying connected to yourself during major life transitions. Inside this conversation: the question every couple should ask before planning a wedding why meaningful gatherings matter so much for women and community navigating family expectations and difficult conversations creating rituals and traditions that feel authentic instead of performative the difference between planning a wedding versus building an intentional marriage how women can set boundaries and avoid losing themselves during wedding planning how Mary and her husband approached their wedding in a more feminist way why connection, community, and relationships are essential for mental health and self worth Whether you’re engaged, married, single, healing from people-pleasing, or simply craving deeper connection in your life, this conversation offers such a grounding perspective on what it means to gather with intention. - How To Host Better Gatherings with Priya Parker
This podcast episode is a companion to “ Issue #58: No More Bad Dinner Parties .” Coming together as a community has the potential to be the most important thing we do—gatherings are supposed to make us feel something, but the uninspiring dinner party I attended is far from an exceptional anecdote. It’s why Priya Parker starts off her book The Art of Gathering with the observation, “ The way we gather matters. And yet most of us spend very little time thinking about the actual ways in which we gather. ” Last week, I spoke to Priya about how to do just that. We chatted about utilizing “generous authority,” how creating a guest list can be a cleansing ritual, and the importance of a purpose and “moment of focus.” I love what she shared, near the end, when I asked her about hosting my first dinner party in my studio apartment . You can listen to our full conversation here: Two quick episode notes: * The article Priya quotes in her book is “ Chill is a Garbage Virtue ” by Alana Massey. * The memory expert Priya references is Ed Cooke . Welcome to the last episode of Series 3! I really hope you have enjoyed the series and it’s given you some pause for thoughts. Don’t forget to rate and review the show on iTunes to help other people find me. Priya Parker is a conflict resolution strategist, based in the States and the author of a 2018 book, The Art of Gathering: How We Meet and Why It Matters. I’ve wanted to speak to her since I read her book in 2019 , because so many of us - myself included! - struggle to maintain our social lives. What to say yes to, what to say no to, what to seek out and what to avoid. Priya talks about gatherings big and small in a way that she calls “small p political” - because it is deeply political, she says, to decide what we celebrate, elevate and value through who, why and when we come together. I think Priya offers a really unique perspective on what gathering actually means. I hope you enjoy it - and thanks for joining me, for series 3! How should we meet? And who decides? by Priya Parker for The New York Times The Art of Gathering by Priya Parker When do we actually need to meet in person? - The Art of Gathering How We Meet and Why It Matters With Priya Parker
Host Travis King of the Community Builder Podcast talks with Priya Parker about the difference between a gathering and a community, and the importance of vulnerability. Episode Highlights: Priya was born in Zimbabwe to scientist parents and her family moved every 6 months. Being biracial with an Indian mother and white father, Priya sees her entire life as creating “temporary alternative worlds” to belong to at any given time as she had to float between communities. We assume that in community building you lose the “I” to the “we,” but in reality the strongest groups maintain both the I and the we. Priya sees a major key and a minor key in gatherings, with the major key being the majority position, and the minor key being dissenting voices and paradoxical identities and difficult conversations. Gatherings and community are distinct things, with communities being built at gatherings. Don’t pursue vulnerability for vulnerability’s sake, it should still be true to the purpose of your gathering and community. Priya is trained in a practice called sustained dialogue, which is a group practice that says you can transform a conflict by transforming the relationships involved in the conflict. A failure at training a university in this practice taught her that an exercise that worked in one context won’t necessarily work in another, and that you should always know your audience. Her husband wrote a book that examines how the idea of changing the world has been co-opted by philanthropy so that no big structural change actually happens at a societal level. 3 Key Points: Every strong community needs both an “I” and a “we.” It’s important to find and sit in the heat of hard conversations or other challenges within a gathering or community. Know the context of the situation you’re entering into and know your audience. Tweetable Quotes: “Communities become interesting when they become disputable.” –Priya Parker “Whenever you have an opportunity where people are willing to take risks for you because they love you, it’s a beautiful thing.” –Priya Parker Resources Mentioned: Priya Parker: Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/priyaparker/) http://www.thrivelabs.co/ (http://www.thrivelabs.co/) Travis King: Linkedin (https://www.linkedin.com/in/travisking1) communitybuildershow.com (http://communitybuildershow.com) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

- Transformative Meetings (No, Really!) with Priya Parker
No one loves meetings, but we all attend them—probably a lot of them! So why are so many meetings so bad, and how can we make them better...or stop having them in the first place? On today’s show, we talk to author and facilitator Priya Parker about how to make gatherings of all kinds more meaningful, memorable, and inclusive. Priya is a professionally trained in conflict resolution, and has worked on race relations at college campuses and on peace processes globally. She’s the founder of Thrive Labs and the author of The Art of Gathering: How We Meet and Why It Matters . And she’s got a ton to say about bringing people together with purpose. > When I hear “we want everyone to be excellent to each other,” it makes me angry. And the reason it makes me angry is because it’s a power-blind way of seeing. It assumes that people when they walk in, that there aren’t any power dynamics, that there isn’t any hierarchy. That everyone will behave in the way that in your mind you think everybody behaves. And it assumes that you are creating a utopia without actually doing anything to create that utopia. > — Priya Parker , author, The Art of Gathering Priya tells us all about: How we’ve reduced meetings to the “things”—like food, wine, and table settings—and let our people wither. “This reflects an assumption that we’ve had for many decades, which is if you get the things right in the gathering, everything else will take care of itself. And I can tell you as a group facilitator, that is not true. Why even events like sex parties have a ton of structure. “It allows people to actually organize and be around that purpose in a way that they don’t have to feel like they’re having to take care of themselves and each other.” Why “being chill” isn’t going to make your event relaxed. “Being chill is actually a selfish act. Because you’re doing it because of how you want people to see you.” Links: The Art of Gathering Thrive Labs Twitter Instagram Also in this episode, Katel and Sara talk about the joys and challenges of running meetings, the power and vulnerability of owning your expertise, and so much more. Plus: we chat with Graywolf Press about new books to read this spring, and celebrate getting involved in grassroots organizations.
