- What Moms Carry: The Science of Letting Go, Alcohol & Raising Resilient Kids with Jessica Lahey
What if the anxiety you feel for your kids—the urge to step in, fix it, smooth it over—is actually wired into your brain? Andwhat if the wine you pour at the end of that exhausting day is quietly making everything worse? In this episode, Danielle sits down with Jessica Lahey—educator, journalist, author of The Gift of Failure andThe Addiction Inoculation, and a woman nearly 14 years into her own recovery—for a conversation about what the research actually tells us about raising kids who are resilient, substance-aware, and capable of handling difficulty on their own. This isn’t a parenting lecture. It’s part science, partconfession, and part permission slip, for the mother who’s quietly wondering if she’s doing it right, and reaching for something to take the edge off when she’s not sure. In this conversation, we talk about • Why the parental brain reads a child’s struggle as afull-blown emergency, and what to do with that impulse • The “mommy wine culture” problem: what our kids are absorbing when every hard moment ends with“I need a drink” • Why the European moderation myth is just that, and what theWHO data actually says • How competence, mastery, and self-efficacy protect kidsbetter than any single conversation about drugs • What’s different for women and alcohol: metabolism, anxiety, and the breast cancer connection • How to reset the rules in your house, even if you feel like you’ve already “messed it up” Key Takeaways • The single most consistent finding: delay first use aslong as possible. The younger the first use, the higher the lifetime risk. •When you ask parents why kids drink, they say peer pressure. When you ask kids, they say stress and anxiety. • Kids who learn to handle hard things and feel thedopamine hit of real achievement have a genuinely lower risk. • Women metabolize alcohol differently, and drinking to manage anxiety almost always backfires. •It’s never too late to change the conversation. - 07. What Keeps Me Hopeful: Being Active for Trans Kids with Jessica Lahey
So many of us are trying so hard to protect our kids from failure of any kind. Getting it wrong and having regrets is scary! Of course we want to protect our kids from that. But really, when we hover over their homework or swoop in with a plan to fix it when they're struggling, we're protecting ourselves from our anxieties about being a good enough parent. There's kind of no better time to fail than when you're a kid. The stakes are still pretty low. When kids learn how to struggle and get it wrong and fail, it strengthens their ability to move through hard things and builds resilience. To talk more about how we can support our kids through failure, I reached out to Jessica Lahey, who wrote a book that I often refer to in my work called The Gift of Failure. Her book has really shaped the way I view failure and how I encourage others to view failure and Jessica also happens to be the parent of a trans kid, so we'll talk about that experience as well. Check out the full episode to hear about: Why we need to allow kids to get frustrated with tasks Why adults need to model trying new things and making mistakes How to give kids opportunities to learn life skills, even when it would be easier for you to just do it How Jessica’s natural openness has been challenged around her much more private daughter’s transition How Jessica and her family are leaning on their supports and doing work that matters to them in the face of our current climate How Jessica weighs sharing her pride of her daughter with concerns for her privacy and safety Find out more about Jessica Lahey: Website Newsletter The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed Find out more about Mackenzie Dunham: Wildheartsociety.org wildheartsociety.org/downloads Wild Heart Society on Facebook Wild Heart Society on Instagram Resources: Register for Camp Donate to the Queer Community Network Differently W

I’ve been telling everyone about this book! Ever since I read The Gift of Failure by Jessica Lahey, it has truly changed my parenting . My mindset about the mistakes my kids make and little accidents they have is totally more peaceful, and the whole time I was absorbing the information, I was thinking, “How can I interview this author so I can share her amazing wisdom with my audience???” Turns out all I had to do was post something I had done using the Failure Philosophy with one of my kids here on Facebook, and someone tagged her and now — here we are! 😀 Here are a few things we talked about: How teachers are finding that kids these days are literally “less teachable,” and how fear of making mistakes and inability to deal with frustration turned out to be at the root Jessica’s surprising story of how old her child was when he learned to tie his shoes What simple three-letter word we need to use so much more with our kids to help them focus on process and progress Why it’s so hard for us as parents to let our kids fail! The reason college kids are taking longer to finish college even though they are really smart and have high test scores… One simple step to help our kids break free from their helplessness Why “self-directed executive function” should be part of your interaction with your kids, and some questions to ask them regularly An easy equation for figuring out how much responsibility we can give each of our children at various ages Why the kitchen is an excellent place to promote failure and the motivation for us to do it! - 077 - The Addiction Inoculation: Raising Healthy Kids in a Culture of Dependence with Jessica Lahey
This week on The Perinatal Podcast, Jessica Lahey joins me to chat about how to set our kids up for success in regard to what they put in their bodies even from a young age, what to have intentional conversations about quitting things like piano and soccer, even how to be a happier parent. What a delight it was having Jessica on to share about the effects of over-parenting, how to help build autonomy in our children, and how all of this is not done in one simple conversation, and I'm so excited to share our discussion with you! About Jessica: Jessica Lahey is the author of the New York Times bestselling book, The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed and The Addiction Inoculation: Raising Healthy Kids in a Culture of Dependence. Jess was awarded the Research Society on Alcohol’s Media Award for “outstanding journalistic efforts of writers who cover empirical research on alcohol” […] “for her book The Addiction Inoculation and advocacy for the recovery community.” Over twenty years, Jess has taught every grade from sixth to twelfth in both public and private schools, and spent five years teaching in a drug and alcohol rehab for adolescents in Vermont. She has written about education, parenting, and child welfare for The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and her biweekly column “The Parent Teacher Conference” ran for three years at the New York Times. She designed and wrote the educational curriculum for Amazon Kids’ award-winning animated series The Stinky and Dirty Show, and was a 2019 Pushcart Prize nominee. Jess holds the dubious honor of having written an article that was later adapted as a writing prompt for the 2018 SAT. She co-hosts the #AmWriting podcast from her empty nest in Vermont.
