More than 70 years after Brown v. Board of Education, New York City schools remain deeply segregated. What has changed since then, and what has not? In this special episode, we share a live recording from “Separate: NYC Public Schools 72 Years After Brown v. Board, An Intergenerational Discussion,” an event co-hosted by The Bell and the Center for Brooklyn History on May 18, 2026. The event brought together students, educators, journalists, policymakers and advocates to examine segregation, equity and the future of New York City public schools. Across much of the country, Republican officials are reaching into K-12 classrooms and universities alike to exert control over what can be taught. In Florida, Texas, and many other states, laws now restrict teaching historical facts about race and racism. Book challenges and bans are surging. Public universities are seeing political meddling in the tenure process. Advocates of these measures say, in effect, that education must emphasize only the positive aspects of American history. Nikole Hannah-Jones, the New York Times Magazine reporter who developed the 1619 Project, and Jelani Cobb, the dean of the Columbia University School of Journalism, talk with David Remnick about the changing climate for intellectual freedom. “I just think it’s rich,” Hannah-Jones says, “that the people who say they are opposing indoctrination are in fact saying that curricula must be patriotic.” She adds, “You don’t ban books, you don’t ban curriculum, you don’t ban the teaching of ideas, just to do it. You do it to control what we are able to understand and think about and imagine for our society.”

California’s official task force on reparations has delivered its final report to the state legislature. The report includes a formula for determining direct financial compensation, along with more than 100 other recommendations, including establishing universal health care, implementing rent caps in historically redlined neighborhoods, and making Election Day a paid holiday. And in their report, the authors spent a significant amount of time explaining why reparations are necessary for the descendants of enslaved Black Americans, and why the government is responsible. Three years ago, host Trymaine Lee spoke about this case for reparations with Nikole Hannah-Jones , creator of the 1619 Project , and now, a journalism professor at Howard University. The conversation came right after Nikole published her article “ What is Owed ” in her role as a staff writer for the New York Times Magazine. The 1619 Project was a career-defining moment for New York Times reporter Nikole Hannah-Jones . Released as a standalone issue of the Times Magazine in August 2019, the project sought to reframe the American narrative, linking our country’s founding to the arrival of the first enslaved Africans on the shores of Virginia. When the project was initially released it was widely praised as a much-needed corrective to a white-washed version of American history. But there was also pushback from the likes of then-President Trump and Fox News. And some of that pushback was downright nasty. Just in time for Thanksgiving week, Nikole Hannah-Jones joins the podcast to discuss revisionist history, which often omits the ways slavery provided a foundation for the U.S. to thrive. In this conversation, journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones discusses how reporters and editors of color are underrepresented in newsrooms. She addresses the idea of objectivity in journalism, which she refers to as the “objectivity fallacy,” and how it impacts journalists of color. The question of reparations for descendants of enslaved people is also explored, with reference to Hannah-Jones’ recent essay What Is Owed.

There is a pervasive wealth gap between Black and white Americans, the result of centuries of systemic violence and racism. Today, Black families have just 10% of the wealth white families have accumulated. New York Times staff writer Nikole Hannah-Jones says this racial wealth gap isn’t an accident. It’s the product of over 400 years of slavery, racial segregation, and discrimination. In her cover story, “What is Owed,” for the New York Times Magazine, Hannah-Jones explains how the US government has been complicit in preventing Black people from accumulating wealth.
