Sir Gareth Southgate is England's most successful manager since 1966. Two finals, four tournaments and by the end, fans were throwing beer at him in the stadium. Today, as England embark on another World Cup journey, we revisit one of the most candid leadership conversations we've ever recorded. Gareth explains why he knew it was time to leave before the final was even played, what he said to his players before England's penalty shootouts, and how it took him 52 years to silence the voice in his head — the same voice that froze him in 1996. He also gets into the unglamorous reality of leading a high-profile team: how to protect players from outside noise when you can't protect yourself from it, why he banned himself from speaking first in staff meetings, and what it actually felt like to walk through the door as England manager and realise culture, not tactics, was the problem. Gareth Southgate joins Marvyn Harrison for a rare and honest conversation about the crisis facing young men and boys in Britain today — and what we actually do about it. In this episode, Gareth discusses his new BBC One documentary Gareth Southgate: Changing the Game for Young Men (airing 8th June, 9pm, BBC One & iPlayer), why he felt compelled to make it after his Dimbleby Lecture, what a good man actually looks like in 2025, and how we reach the men already left behind. From missing the most famous penalty in English football to leading the national team into a new era, Gareth Southgate’s story is one of quiet resilience, modern leadership and emotional intelligence forged under relentless public pressure. In this episode of Full Disclosure , James O’Brien sits down with Gareth to trace the long road that shaped him. From being an introverted, late-developing youngster released by Southampton, to captaining Crystal Palace, enduring searing public failure, and eventually becoming England manager. They talk candidly about masculinity in football, learning to lead without bluster, and why authenticity matters more than authority. Southgate reflects on the moments that changed him most. The heartbreak of rejection, the pressure of managing people older and wealthier than him, the lessons drawn from defeat, and the responsibility of becoming a role model far beyond the pitch. He explains how England became a mirror for modern Britain, why he wrote Dear England , and what leadership really looks like when things go wrong. Thoughtful, honest and quietly powerful, this conversation goes well beyond football. It is about growth, failure, emotional courage and the belief that leadership is something you learn, not something you pretend to be. From handling Wayne Rooney’s retirement to protecting players from public scrutiny, Southgate opens up about the realities of leading under relentless pressure, the evolution of England’s team culture, and what legacy truly means beyond trophies. This is a rare, honest conversation with one of football’s most thoughtful leaders, about resilience, accountability, and what it really takes to lead a nation. 🚨 Partners Simba 👉 Jake believes better performance starts with better sleep. In this episode, we’re thrilled to welcome Sir Gareth Southgate, a renowned figure in English football and a symbol of leadership both on and off the pitch. Gareth is best known for his leadership as manager of the England men’s national football team from 2016 to 2024. Under his guidance, the team reached the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup, and the finals of UEFA’s European Championships in 2020 and 2024. His leadership was marked by his ability to reconnect the team with its fans, instil a sense of pride in representing England, and foster a culture of integrity and respect. Before transitioning to management, Gareth had a distinguished playing career, making over 500 league appearances for clubs like Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and Middlesbrough. He captained both Aston Villa and Middlesbrough, leading them to League Cup wins and a UEFA Cup final. His leadership as a player was rooted in the values of discipline, hard work, and mutual respect for all members of the team. Gareth’s managerial journey began at Middlesbrough before he took charge of the England Under-21s, ultimately stepping into the senior England manager role. He reflects on his early experiences and the leadership lessons learned from those around him, including his youth coach at Crystal Palace, who instilled the importance of discipline and challenge. Gareth also highlights the impact of his time at Aston Villa, where he learned valuable leadership lessons from senior players, who demonstrated generosity and selflessness despite being in competition for a starting role. Throughout the podcast, Gareth talks about the importance of leadership values such as integrity, respect, and treating everyone equally, regardless of their role in the team. He believes in the power of empathy and emotional intelligence, emphasising that being a good leader is not just about making decisions but about understanding the needs and perspectives of those you lead. Gareth also shares how he learned to delegate more effectively as he progressed in his leadership career, recognising that trust in others is essential for a successful team dynamic. He also reflects on the generational challenges facing young leaders today, particularly in terms of social skills like making eye contact and saying good morning. Gareth stresses the importance of empathy and creating an environment where people feel psychologically safe enough to speak up and offer their views. He acknowledges that leadership is an ongoing journey of growth and learning, always striving to improve and adapt to new challenges. In addition to his football career, Gareth is passionate about youth development and resilience. He’s an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust and a patron of Help for Heroes, working to support young people and veterans. He has also written books, including We Only Do Positive for youth football and Anything is Possible , a motivational guide for young people. Gareth’s new book, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership , is set to delve deeper into his leadership journey and the lessons he’s learned from his time managing England. This book promises to provide insight into his approach to leadership, the challenges he faced, and how he navigated them to build a winning team. Gareth hopes to inspire readers by sharing the leadership principles that have guided him throughout his career, aiming to encourage the next generation of leaders to trust themselves, embrace failure, and always strive for improvement.

Gareth Southgate OBE is the most successful England men’s football manger in the modern game. He holds the record as the man who has represented England in more games than anyone else, with 102 games as men's senior team manager, 57 caps as a player and 37 as men's under-21 head coach, leading to a total of 196 games in which he has been involved as a player or coach. It’s a remarkable career and one which shows his resilience and determination. Ever since he joined a football team as a schoolboy, he dreamed of being a footballer and perhaps one day, wearing the England shirt. He was rejected by Southampton as a teenager and was determined to come back and succeed. He managed to do that, playing for Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough as a defender and midfielder. After his playing career ended he went into management eventually becoming one of the England national team’s most successful managers. Along the way, his different approach to leadership in sport, together with his quest to understand what is Englishness makes him one of the most impressive football managers in England’s history.
