  • S5 Episode 39: Where The Mind Lives with Dr. Dan Siegel, Neuropsychiatrist

Dr. Dan Siegel is a psychiatrist, author, educator, and one of the most visionary minds in the fields of mental health, neuroscience, and human development. He is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA, and the Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute. As the architect of the field known as interpersonal neurobiology, he has spent more than three decades weaving together science and story, brain and body, biology and belonging; and his body of work, including The Developing Mind, Mindsight, The Whole-Brain Child, Aware, and his most recent book, IntraConnected has helped millions of people understand how relationships and integration shape who we are, how we heal, and how we grow. He has worked with everyone from trauma survivors and therapists to educators, policymakers, spiritual leaders, and scientists across disciplines. His models are scientifically grounded, emotionally resonant, intellectually rigorous, and deeply compassionate; all centered around one guiding truth: that integration is the foundation of well-being, and that healing must never lose sight of what it means to be human. Dr. Siegel’s contributions reach far beyond the clinical setting, and his work invites us into a deeper understanding of ourselves, reminding us that the mind is not confined within the skull, it is a dynamic, relational process that thrives on connection. Through his teachings, he offers not just tools, but a new way of seeing and a language for our inner lives, a map for coming home to ourselves. In a world that fragments and forgets, Dr. Siegel reminds us that healing isn’t a destination, it’s a relationship to presence, to others, to life itself, and perhaps more than anything, reminds us that the mind is not something we possess; it’s something we participate in and when we begin to live from that place, we don’t just understand ourselves better… We remember who we really are. Maybe you’ve done such a good job of “managing for so long” having to do something different or talk to someone can feel uncomfortable. The idea of therapy, to me, felt like I had to admit that there was something wrong with me or that I’d be showing the world that I was broken or didn't have it all together… but when my health started to suffer, and I was anxious 24/7… I realized my body was trying to tell me something was wrong and I learned that there is no “good health” without mental health. Therapy was the answer for me, it helped me put down all of the heavy things that I was carrying that didn’t belong to me. While therapy can provide so much relief, finding a therapist can feel so daunting. BetterHelp, the sponsor of today’s video, has done so much to make finding a therapist and starting therapy so much easier! • Personality Matters: An Integrated Theory of Wholeness with Dr. Dan Siegel | E78

Can we really change our personalities ? Dr. Dan Siegel says “NO” but also that nobody needs to. We can help our clients heal, grow, and unleash the fullest of their potential by helping them lean into who and what they really ARE. Crazy but true: We therapists are not taught how to work with personality in therapy. Unless you have a “personality disordered” individual (as we used to call it back in the day) we don’t tailor our interventions or our conceptualization to accommodate someone’s intrinsic way of being. Who else is ready to change this? (Lisa raises hand!) Well, help is here: In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. Dan Siegel to explore his Patterns of Developmental Pathways (PDP) model: a science-based framework that weaves together neuroscience, attachment, and developmental psychology to help us understand personality more deeply and work with it more effectively. We unpack the nine core patterns, explore how to differentiate temperament from attachment conditioning, and look at how healing at the right level can help clients shift from limitation to possibility. Whether you’re new to PDP or already exploring it, this conversation will expand your clinical lens and give you tools you can use right away. • Personality, IFS, and the Enneagram with Dan Siegel

On today's episode I chat with Dr. Dan Siegel, renowned author and founder of Interpersonal Neurobiology, and my friend, Joan Ryan, Enneagram expert and educator. We explore the intersection of the Enneagram, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Dan's Patterns of Developmental Pathways (PDP) model. Our conversation dives into the science behind personality, the pathways that shape our inner worlds, and the ongoing journey toward integration and wholeness. Dan explains how his PDP model offers a scientific lens to understand personality dynamics, while the Enneagram and IFS provide tools for personal exploration and healing. They discuss how personality acts as a filter. Key Takeaways: Personality is a dynamic filter shaped by temperament, experience, and protective strategies. The PDP model identifies three core motivational vectors: agency, bonding, and certainty. How do the Enneagram and IFS complement each other in helping us explore and integrate our inner worlds? Protectors and exiles align with motivational pathways, and how integration allows us to move from survival strategies to thriving. Integration invites us to shift from limiting patterns into greater freedom and possibility. Wholeness is not about escaping personality but embracing all parts of who we are. "Your home base is wholeness. But personality is kind of just a filter that keeps you at times from experiencing that wholeness." – Dr. Dan Siegel Episode sponsor: Sentur About the Guests: Dr. Dan Siegel is the Founder and Director of Education of the Mindsight Institute and founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA, where he was also Co-Principal Investigator of the Center for Culture, Brain and Development and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the School of Medicine. E374 – "Inner Voice: A Heartfelt Chat with Dr. Foojan Zeine." In this episode, Dr. Foojan Zeine chats with Dr. Dan Siegel. He is the executive director of the Mindsight Institute and founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA, where he was also Co-Principal Investigator of the Center for Culture, Brain and Development and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the School of Medicine. An award-winning educator, Dan is the author of five New York Times bestsellers and over fifteen other books, which have been translated into over forty languages. As the founding editor of the Norton Professional Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology ("IPNB"), Dan has overseen the publica4on of one hundred books in the transdisciplinary IPNB framework, which focuses on the mind and mental health. A graduate of Harvard Medical School, Dan completed his postgraduate training at UCLA, specializing in pediatrics and adult, adolescent, and child psychiatry. He was trained in attachment research and narrative analysis through a National Institute of Mental Health research training fellowship focusing on how relationships shape our autobiographical ways of making sense of our lives and influence our development across the lifespan. Learn more about Dr. Siegel at: www.drdansiegel.com | www.mindsigh4ns4tute.com Dr. Foojan and Dr. Dan Siegel discussed the upcoming release of dan's new book, "Personality and Wholeness in Therapy," and the concept of personality in academic and clinical contexts. Dr. Siegel explained that personality refers to persistent emotions, thinking, and behavior patterns that develop over time and contribute to an individual's sense of wholeness. However, he noted that these patterns can become unworkable or unhealthy, leading to personality disorders. The conversation also touched on the relationship between brain activity and mental activity, with dan emphasizing the importance of energy flow as the foundation of both. Lastly, dan shared his insights on the formation of sound as a symbolic means of communication and the differences between personality patterns and types. He discussed the concept of implicit memory and its role in forming personality, suggesting that a sense of wholeness encoded into the brain during fetal development serves as the foundation of personality. He introduced the Enneagram personality type system, discussing its potential limitations and proposing a more fluid approach, the Patterns of Developmental Pathways (PDP) model. He also explained the three primary emotions of the Enneagram system, highlighting the neuroplasticity of the brain and the role of attachment in the process. Dr. Siegel explained the different forms of attachment and their impact on personality. He emphasized that non-secure attachment can lead to emotional distance, intrusiveness, and inconsistency, resulting in ambivalence or disorganization. He discussed the concept of growth edges, emphasizing the importance of embracing uncertainty and the reality of a journey. He highlighted that individuals have an inward or outward bonding pattern and encouraged them to accept their vulnerabilities and needs. Dr. Siegel introduced a model of personality development that emphasizes growth and exploration of different patterns, explaining how individuals can identify their growth edge and benefit from tapping into the positive aspects of each of the nine patterns. The conversation also touched on the potential of meditation and psychedelics in expanding consciousness and promoting wholeness, suggesting a collective consciousness that underpins individual growth and development.

  • Podcast 985: A Conversation with Dan Siegel

Pianist and keyboardist Dan Siegel has covered a broad swath of the jazz spectrum over the course of his four-and-a-half decade career, from straight ahead swing to sleek contemporary sounds. While that’s a testament to Siegel’s multi-faceted talents and restless curiosity, it’s also the result of the diverse array of collaborators that have joined him along the journey – a roster that includes Bela Fleck, Steve Gadd, Larry Carlton, Ernie Watts, Ottmar Liebert, Lee Ritenour, Brian Bromberg, Eric Marienthal, Bob Sheppard, Boney James, Alex Acuña and others. Siegel’s twenty-third release, Unity , is the latest and one of the finest examples of that alchemical process. It reunites the keyboardist with drummer Oscar Seaton for the first time in 20 years, since the recording of the 2004 album Inside Out . It also marks his first meeting with bassist David “DJ” Ginyard, Seaton’s rhythm section partner in Terence Blanchard’s electrically charged E-Collective band. From the time the trio entered the studio together, Siegel’s vision of the music he’d written for the session irrevocably changed, a display of the titular unity. To the core trio, Siegel added a rotating cast of master guitarists, most of them longtime compatriots and friends who each added their own distinctive flavors to the tracks: Rob Bacon (Raphael Saadiq, Amp Fiddler), Allen Hinds (Roberta Flack, Natalie Cole), Michael Miller (Boz Scaggs, Chick Corea), Dean Parks (Steely Dan, Michael Jackson), and Michael Thompson (Babyface, Whitney Houston). Unity also features percussion great Lenny Castro, whose relationship with Siegel dates back to the keyboardist’s self-titled 1982 album, as does that of prolific saxophonist Tom Scott, who heads the album’s horn section. During out conversation for Podcast 985, Siegel acknowledged that at 70, his long and rewarding career is entering a concluding chapter. It’s refreshing to hear an artist address the arc of his career, and Dan speaks eloquently for his fondness for his collaborators, his life as a musician and producer, and the possibility that he may still have more musical mountains to climb. Muscial selections from Unity include “free Spirit” and “Simple Things.”

  • Podcast 855: A Conversation with Dan Siegel

Podcast interviews these days can sound like “How I Spent My Covid Vacation” at times. So many musicians used to traveling, gigging and recording at length became housebound. Some used the time to practice; others learned new instruments or worked on previously back-burnered material. Pianist/Composer Dan Siegel (no relation to your humble host) prepared his 22nd album as a leader, Faraway Places , by reaching out to his favorite players and bringing in a host of top sidemen to breathe life into his project via the internet. Joining Siegel on the album are saxophonist Eric Marienthal, trumpeter/trombonist Lee Thornburg, guitarist Allen Hinds, acoustic bassist Brian Bromberg, electric bassists Abraham Laboriel and Dwayne “Smitty” Smith, percussionist Lenny Castro, and on two tracks Brazilian vocalist Rogerio Jardim. The material seems divided into three different styles. The first is more accessible, radio friendly and closer to Smooth Jazz. The second is solidly straight ahead, closer to the styles of his past work. Lastly, the addition of accordion by Dan, a hymn-like choir of vocalists and the wordless vocals of Jardim are closer to a Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays collaboration, and have a spiritual feel. Dan began playing piano at the age of eight, and has grown into a composer, pianist, producer and arranger for himself and others, from Herbie Hancock to Philip Bailey to Hugh Masekela. In Podcast 855 we discuss the making of Faraway Places , talk about his style of composition, and how the West Coast of the US has been fairing as musical life slowly reaches the New Normal. Musical selections include “Old School" and "Some Time Ago."

  • The Science and Benefits Behind a Meditation Practice with Dr. Dan Siegel’s Wheel of Awareness.

This is episode #60 on The Science Behind a Meditation Practice with a Deep Dive into Dr. Dan Siegel’s Wheel of Awareness. Welcome to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning podcast, my name is Andrea Samadi, I’m a former educator whose been fascinated with understanding the science behind high performance strategies in schools, sports and the workplace and created this podcast to bring the most current neuroscience research, along with high performing experts who have risen to the top of their field with specific strategies or ideas that you can implement immediately, whether you are a teacher in the classroom, a parent trying to figure out homeschooling and working from home, or someone working in the corporate world, to take your results to the next level. After watching Dr. Daniel Siegel the past few weeks on his “Pep Me Up Talks” [i] where he shares with an audience around the world about his books, tools and resources like the “Wheel of Awareness Meditation” [ii] that I’ve been using every day since preparing for his interview last year, I thought it was important to cover a deep dive into this topic to bring in the science behind meditation, to increase belief and credibility behind these practices that are now commonly seen in our schools, homes and workplaces. We did cover the topic of meditation for beginners with Mindfulness and Meditation Expert Mick Neustadt in episode #25 with “How Meditation and Mindfulness Changes Your Life” [iii] if you want to review that episode. I have been following Dr. Dan Siegel since 2015, reading his books, and learning from his resources, and on the interview I had with him for episode #28 on “Mindsight: The Basis for Social and Emotional Intelligence” [iv] (close to the end of the interview) we talk about what I have been learning from doing the meditation tool that he created. At the time—in October 2019, I had been doing his meditation every morning for 2 months. You can see this part of the interview here at (42:52) [v] where he asks me what I have learned from this practice, and although I downloaded this activity, and explored the Wheel in 2015, I didn’t start doing it daily until I was preparing for his interview, because I knew he would ask me what I had learned from this practice, and when I first tried it, and in the beginning, I honestly found it a bit advanced and confusing and didn’t want to tell him that so I put in some extra effort to understand it. If you have not yet tried “The Wheel of Awareness” [vi] Meditation, please do go to the link and download it, so you can see the image of the wheel, and try it out. This episode might make more sense once you do that and if you feel like I did in the beginning, don’t worry, it’s now been 8 months of practicing this daily and I’m just starting to figure out how to explain it now, so just try it and see what benefits you notice. I wanted to share Dan’s findings of asking thousands of people around the world, over the years first. If you have ever heard him talking about the Wheel of Awareness, you will know that the idea came to him when he bought a custom-made round table for his office so that his patients didn’t have to sit at a regular table. His mediation has evolved over the years as he has shared it with experts, and those who hold scientific evidence of the benefits of incorporating a daily meditation into your routine and life. If you are listening to this podcast, you will want to look at the image of the wheel in the show notes so you can physically see each of the segments I’m going to describe. In his book, Aware: The Science and Practice of Presence , Dr. Siegel explains that there are research-based elements of mind training that should include 3 pillars: focused attention, open awareness and kind intentions towards others.<a href='#_

Deep discussion on how the current political, international and climate crises could be viewed as a chance to transform human connection rather than be seen from a place of doom. Dr. Siegel called for us all to become pervasive leaders – a great inspiration.Look for a new interview with Dr. Siegel coming soon on his new book, Aware. We will publish that very early into our next season which will be launched soon!Interview with Dr Dan Siegel, the father of Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB). Get a peak into his thoughts on building hope in our fear-based culture today, human kind across history and using this science to make changes individually and as a society. Sue Marriott LCSW and Patty Olwell LPC speak with Dr. Dan Siegel about the most recent finding in his new book, Mind: A Journey to the Heart of Being Human (A New York Times Best Seller). Dan Siegel discussed how the current political, international and climate crises could be viewed as a chance to transform human connection rather than from place of doom. He called for us all to become pervasive leaders — Pervasive Leadership characteristics :Change your mental model of I and Thou. Act locally; think holistically. Enact empathetic stewardship Human history over time – Sapians – (see resource list). Homosapians have been killing their brothers and kin since the beginning of recorded time, so any current cultural unkindness is part of our hardwiring. We can rise above it, but first recognize it as human. Interpersonal neurobiology – coined by Dan Siegel in 1999 is a way of living and viewing the world with a set of principles that lead toward integration. Integration – combining distinct specialized functions that link and connect the specializations together, creating harmony. This is a view that can be utilized within one person and across couples, families, organizations and nations. In-group/Out-group discussion and MindsightWhen a person is seen as the same, we have a natural resonance and empathy. If we feel safe we can extend that to those that appear Other. If we feel threat – even if we don’t know we are feeling it (nanoseconds of a threatening photo flashed, outside of our awareness) we respond strongly by turning off our empathy for the Out-group and turning up our response to the In-group. This is the explanation for what is happening here in the United States and Britain and many places around the world where genocides are occurring. Terror is driving this IN/OUT hostile behavior. With practice this can be changed. Say to yourself: My nervous system is making me treat the other person as an Out group member with more hostility, but that goes against my larger values of treating all human beings, all living beings with deep respect, as I would my In-group. We can rise above it. Rise above our brains initial proclivity towards bias and our mind to actively change how our brain ultimately carries out behavior – to be able to see the others mind and treat them as an in-group. Compassionately, fairly. Our leaders, people who run our country, organizations, educational institutions, clinicians, and people in positions to raise children… all have brains and minds that can overcome this biologic bias. We should see them as humans with limitations. Uninformed. They need safety to let down.
