- The power of intermittent fasting | Jason Fung
What if the key to reversing stubborn weight gain, balancing hormones, and even preventing chronic disease isn't more food… but strategically less? In this powerful episode, I sit down with Jason Fung to unpack the science—and the simplicity—behind intermittent fasting. Dr. Fung is a world-renowned nephrologist, New York Times bestselling author of The Obesity Code, and a pioneer in using fasting as a therapeutic tool to reverse type 2 diabetes and metabolic disease. After witnessing firsthand how conventional treatments often worsened his patients' health, he developed a groundbreaking approach focused on lowering insulin and restoring metabolic balance. Together, we explore how intermittent fasting works with your body—not against it—and why it's especially powerful for women navigating hormonal shifts. In this episode, you'll discover: Why insulin—not calories—is the key driver of weight gain and metabolic dysfunction How intermittent fasting supports fat burning, hormone balance, and cellular repair The biggest myths about fasting (especially for women!)—and what actually works How fasting impacts menopause, cravings, and energy levels Simple, sustainable ways to begin fasting safely and effectively This conversation is both empowering and practical—giving you tools to take control of your metabolism, your hormones, and your long-term health. Ready to reset your metabolism and feel like yourself again? Listen now and share this episode with a girlfriend who needs to hear it. The quality of calories matters to your health. (8:00) What you eat determines what your body does. (11:15) There is a limit to how much you should eat, however. (12:00) Natural foods trigger satiety; ultra-processed foods mess with the body's natural signaling hormones. There are three types of hunger: homeostatic (physical), hedonic (emotional), and conditioned (social). (17:00) Food companies, over the years, have developed ways to keep you eating, even when your body isn't truly hungry. (27:00) Many foods trigger a conditioned response. The term "food noise" is all over the place. Once you get your hormones working properly through low-carb, "food noise" goes away. (31:00) The process isn't overnight, but it will happen. Dr. Fung offers his thoughts on "food noise." (33:00) So much of our eating today is driven by conditioned responses and activities paired with food. GLP1s Are Not Magic GLP-1 naturally occurs in the body, and certain foods like protein and fiber will trigger it properly in your body. But the medical doses administered pharmacologically are massive and squelch all hunger signals. The biggest problem with exogenous GLP-1s is the loss of your body's ability to learn and respond to proper hunger signals. (36:30) Another issue is that it can also dull *everything* else in life, too. (40:00) They are a tool, not a magic bullet. Oftentimes, when a person stops the drug, they often gain even more fat than before. (42:00) There is, of course, the concern of muscle loss as well. If you are already fighting sarcopenia and add GLP-1s, there could be serious issues to follow. (43:00) Vinnie discusses "eating through" both bariatric surgery and now the GLP-1 meds. (46:00) These drugs can be effective, but there is always a cost. They discuss the transition Weight Watchers made when it entered the GLP-1 market. (54:00) They discuss other peptides and whether or not they are beneficial. (57:00) They discuss other "miracle cure" trends. What you *can* do is trust real food! - A Doctor’s Argument For Why Most Diet’s Fail: The Hidden Hormone Problem Driving Weight Gain and What To Do About It with Dr. Jason Fung
This episode is brought to you by Cozy Earth , LMNT , Maui Nui , and One Skin . When we think about weight loss, it’s usually framed as a matter of willpower. Eat less. Move more. Try harder. But this episode explores an alternative perspective. Dr. Jason Fung argues that obesity isn’t simply about calories, but about hunger, hormones, and what he describes as a biological “fat thermostat” that may be working against you. Today on The Dhru Purohit Show , Dhru sits down with Dr. Jason Fung to unpack his framework for understanding weight gain and fat loss. Dr. Fung explains why he believes calorie restriction often fails, the three types of hunger he describes, and how what he calls “over-hunger” may drive weight gain more than overeating alone. He also breaks down his concept of the “fat thermostat,” metabolic compensation, and what he believes we can learn from other cultures about food environments. He shares his views on GLP-1 drugs, protein needs, and the three “golden rules” he recommends for resetting hunger naturally. Dr. Jason Fung is a Nephrologist, researcher, and bestselling author known for reshaping the conversation around obesity, diabetes, and fasting. His books, The Obesity Code , The Diabetes Code , and The Complete Guide to Fasting , have sold over 1 million copies worldwide and have challenged conventional treatment approaches for type 2 diabetes. He is also the author of The Cancer Code and cofounder of The Fasting Method, a program that helps people lose weight and reverse type 2 diabetes through evidence-based fasting. His work has been featured in CNN, Time , The Atlantic , and Forbes . In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Fung dive into: (0:00) Intro (00:37) The Real Problem Isn’t Overeating. - Fasting Q&A with Dr Jason Fung: Aeira Bone Broth, 5:2 Diet, Weight Lifting Fasted, Long-Term Ketosis, and More.
Episode #227 In this Fasting Q&A episode, hosted by Coach Lisa Chance, Dr. Jason Fung answers questions from the TFM Community: 1. Can people tweak the 5:2 diet with the two non-consecutive restricted calorie days as full fast days (water only) and reap the same if not better results, or must food in the form of nutrient dense and low calorie be consumed? [09:21] 2. I have seen videos of Dr Fung endorsing the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD). Does he, Dr Fung advocate it for T2D? I am asking because of the plant based (carb) items in the kit, like the soups, crackers, and bars and the potential spike in insulin and glucose consuming those items? [14:30] 3. While an individualized approach to managing and/or reversing diabetes is best, from a diet perspective, is it generally better to have a diverse diet and manage diabetes with medication if needed, rather than restricting your diet to avoid medication? [18:55] 4. Can one - or more importantly should one - practice OMAD to reverse IR or T2D? Is there a nutritional concern here? Is the length of time that you do OMAD a factor? [21:12] 5. Do I have to leave the weights workout for the last day of prolonged fasting and eat after the workout or can I work out with weights every day during a 5-day fast without problem and continue fasting AFTER the heavy weights workout? [27:01] 6. Is long term ketosis bad for the body? Some doctors are saying it is and you should carb cycle, but are there any studies supporting this? - #833 "Try This 30 Day Protocol!" - #1 Way To Melt Fat, Kill Cancer & Reverse Diabetes with Dr. Jason Fung
Today, I'm fortunate to welcome Dr. Jason Fung for the fifth time. Jason Fung, MD, was born in 1973 and trained in Los Angeles and Toronto as a kidney specialist. He founded The Fasting Method ( TheFastingMethod.com ) to provide evidence-based advice for weight loss and managing blood sugars, focusing on low carbohydrate diets and intermittent fasting. In this episode, Dr. Jason Fung emphasizes that fasting should not be followed by binge eating, as it negates the benefits of the fast. The purpose of fasting is to allow the body to use its stored calories, such as glucose and fat, which is beneficial for weight loss and managing type 2 diabetes. If one consumes excessive calories after fasting, the body will store these extra calories as fat, thereby hindering progress. Tune in as Dr. Fung explains certain foods stimulate GLP-1, a hormone that helps regulate appetite. Protein-rich foods make you feel full quickly, while bitter foods like arugula, dandelion greens, ginger, and spices such as turmeric, fenugreek, and cinnamon can suppress appetite. However, while pharmaceutical interventions targeting GLP-1 can be powerful, they are not always ideal due to potential side effects, such as nausea and loss of enjoyment in food. Episode 2241 - On this Friday's show, Vinnie Tortorich speaks with Dr. Jason Fung and gets your fasting questions answered, including why CICO doesn't work, the "dawn effect", hormones, and much more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2022/11/your-fasting-questions-answered-dr-jason-fung-episode-2241 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS Pure Vitamin Club Pure Coffee Club NSNG® Foods VILLA CAPPELLI EAT HAPPY KITCHEN YOUR FASTING QUESTIONS ANSWERED Vinnie welcomes Dr. Jason Fung back to the show and they chat about misconceptions about what fasting is. (2:00) Dr. Fung explains what fasting is and how CICO (calories in, calories out) is an epic disaster. Weight loss isn't about calories, it's about hormones like insulin and allowing your cells to work. Vinnie asks Dr. Fung about thermodynamics and CICO. (9:00) Thermodynamics has nothing to do with weight gain; it applies to physics, but not physiology. If CICO worked, then all of the "diet businesses" (like Weight Watchers) would be out of business. They explain that fasting affects hormones, which is why eating throughout the day is bad advice. Vinnie and Dr. Fung discuss intermittent fasting as well as medical fasting: what it is, how it works, and some of its benefits. (29:00) They clarify whether or not fasting affects muscle growth. They also discuss what is happening in a "dawn effect". (40:40) Vinnie brings up measuring ketones and Dr. Fung's thoughts on that. They switch to discussing the hormones ghrelin and leptin, what each one does and how each works. (47:45) Dr. Fung clarifies what indeed breaks a fast. - BEST OF: Insulin & Weight Loss with Dr. Jason Fung - Episode 2227
Episode 2227 - On this Saturday's show, we replay the first time Vinnie Tortorich speaks to Dr. Jason Fung and they discuss his book The Obesity Code, insulin and weight loss, metabolic syndrome, intermittent fasting, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/best-of-insulin-weight-loss-dr-jason-fung-episode-2227 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS Pure Vitamin Club Pure Coffee Club NSNG® Foods VILLA CAPPELLI EAT HAPPY KITCHEN INSULIN & WEIGHT LOSS Vinnie welcome Dr. Jason Fung, who is a kidney specialist. (2:05) He works often with type 2 diabetics -- the biggest cause of kidney nephropathy. Type 2 is linked closely with obesity. Insulin has negative effects. Visit his website here Vinnie tells Dr. Fung about his visit to his hometown of Donaldsonville. (7:05) Everyone he met was on multiple medications. They all had some kind of sugary drink in their hands. They discuss how obesity is misunderstood; it is linked with several diseases and is often a part of metabolic syndrome. (8:00) Dr. Fung recommends The Aetiology of Obesity Lectures. (9:00) Sugar is the enemy, not calories! Calories In, Calories Out (CICO) doesn't work or even make sense. (9:10) When you eat fewer calories, your energy expenditure (and thus fat/fuel usage) goes down. You simply get hungrier. It takes time to lose weight. Lots of things raise insulin, not just sugars and grains. (19:40) Insulin resistance leads to higher insulin levels. INTERMITTENT FASTING A key way to break insulin resistance is intermittent fasting. (23:20) Intermittent fasting should happen every day--Dr. Fung explains. (27:50) Having snacks doesn't allow your body to process all the hormones properly. (29:00) Shorter fasts aren't really enough. Dr. Fung explains the various fasting methods he recommends, even longer ones under medical supervision. Body switches to fat burning. (33:15) Obesity is a hormonal imbalance, not a caloric one. (42:00) Cortisol is a stress hormone -- encourages getting fat. Prednisone is a synthetic form of cortisol. Leptin is produced by fat cells and regulates how much fat is in the body If you have lots of fat, leptin is released and tells your brain to stop gaining more weight. When you are quite fat, your body stops responding to leptin. Leptin is a secondary hormone, so it doesn't pass the causal test. Ghrelin is another one of these secondary hormones; as a result, no lasting effect so doesn't pass the causal test either. Vinnie and Dr. Fung discuss a bit more about why CICO doesn't work. (45:00) Type 2 diabetes can be reversed in most cases; however, you can't treat a disease of having too much insulin by giving more insulin! (51:45) They give great comparisons as examples. There needs to be a grassroots movement for changes in the system; there are too many conflicts of interest with people who want to keep the meds going and how they fund things like universities. (53:40) NOTE: At the end of the show, Vinnie references Anna Vocino's old website, but she can now be found at annavocino.com.
