  • E3 - Can You Make Empathy Illegal? | with Professor David Nutt
    Wodcast

What happens when language becomes more powerful than evidence? Today, the Wodcast sits down with Professor David Nutt , one of the world's leading neuropsychopharmacologist, psychiatrists and consciousness researchers, for a thought-provoking exploration of language, consciousness and the extraordinary power of words to shape how we think, feel and act. Together they discuss the origins of the word psychedelic , why MDMA was originally called empathy, how language has influenced public perception and policy, and what happens when words become more powerful than evidence. Along the way, they explore consciousness, curiosity, the role of myth and symbolism, and the profound relationship between science, storytelling and the human experience. Drawing on decades of pioneering research into the brain, consciousness and psychedelic medicine, Professor Nutt reflects on the importance of questioning inherited narratives, remaining open to new evidence, and approaching some of society's most controversial conversations with both scientific rigour and deep compassion. This episode is an invitation to look beyond labels, to think more critically about the words we use, and to discover how language can shape not only our understanding of the world, but our capacity to heal within it. ───── Topics include: The meaning of psychedelic ("mind manifesting") Why MDMA was originally called empathy Consciousness and the human mind Language, perception and public policy Psychedelic research and mental health Science, evidence and curiosity Myth, symbolism and storytelling The power of words to shape society ───── Continue the conversation: Learn more about the work Professor David Nutt discusses in this episode: Psychedelic Action Task Force: https://www.psychedelicaction.org/ Drug Science Uk: https://www.drugscience.org.uk/ ───── Thank you to our sponsor: Nirvana Brewery, Alcohol free beer https://nirvanabrewery.com ───── More from the Wodcast: ➟ Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/wod.cast/ ➟ Apple Podcasts – https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/wodcast/id1896893830 ➟ YouTube – https://youtube.com/@wodcast_channel ➟ Substack – https://wodcast.substack.com/ ➟

  • Drugs on the brain with Professor David Nutt
    Drugs Unwrapped: The Podcast

In this episode, we’re joined by leading neuropsychopharmacologist, Professor David Nutt, for a deep dive into the human brain and its relationship with drugs. We discuss whether our brains are built to consume drugs; whether modern society is changing the brain's neurochemistry and making people more vulnerable to substance use; how benzodiazepines work on the brain; and whether there will ever be a 'methadone equivalent' for stimulants such as cocaine? We also draw upon Prof. Nutt's experience within the political arena, as the former chair of the Advisory Council of the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD). We discuss what impact the potential reclassification of ketamine, to a Class A drug, may have. Alongside this, we explore whether the Green Party’s call to legalise and regulate all drugs is shifting the debate into the mainstream, challenging the idea that progressive drug reform is a political risk. If you have been affected by the issues discussed in this episode, please visit barod.cymru and confidentially chat to a trained support worker via Barod's Live Webchat Service, that is open 7-days a week, or call Dan 24/7, Wales' national drug and alcohol helpline on 0808 808 2234 or text DAN to 81066. Note: The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) makes recommendations to government on the control of dangerous or otherwise harmful drugs, including classification and scheduling under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and its regulations. ACMD is an advisory non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Home Office . • The promise of psychedelics - A conversation with Professor David Nutt
    The NatLifePod

Psychedelics have helped me and many others that I know through real dark times of addictions and depression. My own breakthrough with psychedelics provided the breaking down of my belief systems and reawakened an overwhelmingly empowering sense of my own ability to change. I’m super excited to be sharing this next episode of the NatLifePod with you because I’m behind the mic with Professor David Nutt. who is a neuropsychopharmacologist specialising in the research of drugs that affect the brain and conditions such as addiction, depression anxiety, and sleep. In this chat with David I unpack my own journey with psychedelics and the huge shifts that I have made through working with these powerful medicines David then helps to explain what was actually happening with my brain during and after these mind altering, healing and life changing experiences. It’s a really exciting time and certainly feels that we’re on the cusp of a major revolution in psychiatric medicine and neuroscience that could see psychedelics being used to treat addictions, depression and other mental health conditions. We discuss the potential therapeutic purposes of psychedelics for conditions including depression, PTSD, addiction, anxiety, and eating disorders. • HEALING 101: Unveiling the potential of psychedelics with Professor David Nutt
    Hurt to Healing

On today’s Healing 101, I am honoured to be speaking to Professor David John Nutt, an English neuropsychopharmacologist specialising in the research of drugs that affect the brain and conditions such as addiction, anxiety, and sleep. He is the chairman of Drug Science, a non-profit which he founded in 2010 to provide independent, evidence-based information on drugs. This was such a fascinating conversation and I’ve been desperate to speak to him for so long seeing as I’ve had my own experience with psychedelics. In today’s episode, we take a deep dive into psychedelics and I ask him the questions I’ve always wanted to know such what was the reason therapeutic use of psychedelics was made illegal, why the research surrounding them has always been shrouded in controversy and whether he thinks the general outlook on psychedelics is ever likely to change in the UK. It’s a fascinating conversation and Professor David Nutt explains even the most complicated topics in such a clear and concise way so I really do hope you enjoy it. • How to rewire your brain with Professor David Nutt

Today’s episode is a very special one. My guest for this episode was fired in 2009 by the Home Secretary for his inconvenient views on drug policy, famously stating that ‘taking the drug ecstasy is no more dangerous than riding a horse.’ He really does stand up for what he believes in, and I’m fascinated by, and in awe of, his brilliant mind. Professor David Nutt is a neuropharmacologist, and Director of the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London. He has published over 500 original research papers, 8 government reports, 35 books and his latest book on cannabis came out last month. I felt so honoured to speak with Professor Nutt today. Expect conversations around psychedelics, how psychedelic treatment can lead to breakthroughs in mental health, and the impact of drugs such as cannabis and alcohol. We are in a mental health crisis, and opening our eyes to new fields of research and treatments can be so beneficial for us. Keep an open mind, and enjoy my discussion with Professor Nutt.
