- The Hidden Cost of Always Saying Yes | A Bit of Optimism: Feelings at Work | PART 1
Welcome to Feelings at Work , a special series from A Bit of Optimism with Simon Sinek. Work isn't just about deadlines, meetings, and getting things done. It's also where we experience frustration, excitement, trust, anxiety, belonging, conflict, and joy. If we want to build healthier teams and better workplaces, we have to get better at understanding the emotions that shape how we work together. That's what this series is about. In each episode, Simon Sinek sits down with Yale professor and Lifeshop founder Alex Simon to explore one emotional challenge that affects how we work, lead, and relate to one another. Together, they unpack the emotional skills most of us were never taught—but use every single day. This episode is about saying yes. Have you ever agreed to something... and immediately regretted it? Maybe you didn't want to disappoint someone. Maybe you thought, I'll figure it out somehow. Maybe your calendar is packed, your to-do list never gets shorter, and somehow you're still worried you're letting people down. Most of us don't think of ourselves as "people pleasers." We just want to be helpful. We want to be dependable. We want to be someone others can count on. But what if constantly saying yes is actually making things harder—for you and everyone around you? Together, Simon and Alex explore why so many thoughtful, capable people take on more than they can realistically handle. They unpack the hidden patterns that lead to overwhelm, resentment, and burnout—and why trying to keep everyone happy can quietly make us less reliable. The good news? This is a skill we can learn. In this conversation, you'll discover practical ways to communicate more honestly, set healthier boundaries, and build stronger relationships—without feeling selfish or letting people down. In this episode you'll learn: ➡️ Why saying yes too often can actually make you less reliable ➡️ The hidden connection between overwhelm, burnout, and self-betrayal ➡️ The simple phrase that creates space before committing ➡️ A better alternative to saying yes or no: how to "share the dilemma" ➡️ What leaders can do to create teams where people feel safe telling the truth <p c

- Simon Sinek – What Is an Infinite Game and What Is a Finite Game? ♟️
🎙️♟️ Simon Sinek – What Is an Infinite Game and What Is a Finite Game? ♟️🎙️ In this thought-provoking and perspective-changing episode, Simon Sinek , bestselling author and leadership expert, explores one of the most powerful concepts for long-term success: the difference between a finite game and an infinite game. Understanding this idea can completely transform how you approach business, relationships, leadership, and life itself. 🧠🔥 Simon explains that a finite game has known players, fixed rules, and a clear endpoint. Sports, competitions, and individual contests are finite games—you play to win. 🏆📈 An infinite game , however, has no finish line. The players can change, the rules can evolve, and the goal is not to win but to keep playing and continue growing. Life, business, leadership, and personal development are all infinite games. 🚀🌍 The problem is that many people approach infinite games with a finite mindset. They focus only on short-term victories, comparisons, and quick wins. Simon argues that true success comes when you focus on longevity, purpose, resilience, and continuous improvement rather than simply beating someone else today. 🔑💡 His reflections on leadership, vision, and long-term thinking will resonate with anyone building a business, raising a family, pursuing mastery, or creating a legacy. Whether you're chasing success or searching for meaning, Simon’s message is clear: the goal isn't to win the game—the goal is to stay in the game. 🔥💪 🎧 Tune in to hear Simon Sinek’s powerful explanation of finite and infinite games and how adopting an infinite mindset can transform your life. - The Highest Performance Strategy is Caring About People ft. Simon Sinek
In this episode of The Curiosity Shop, Brené Brown and Adam Grant sit down with their first-ever guest, Simon Sinek. Together, they explore the state of organizations globally, including the chaos hitting C-suites, the human cost of misaligned incentives, AI-driven layoffs, and leaders playing defense when they should be playing offense. They dig into what makes teams high-performing, why caring deeply about the people you lead isn't soft but essential, and what the military's culture of love and loyalty teaches us about business. The conversation also moves through nervous system regulation, shame and guilt in parenting and leadership, and what AI can or cannot replace about human connection. This episode is a reminder that the things we've been told to leave out of business, such as love, care, and human connection, may be the most important things we can bring to it. - Simon Sinek: The Dangerous Myth of Online Vulnerability & Rethinking Capitalism
Simon Sinek drops a truth early that most people are not prepared to hear: income inequality is a greater social threat than AI or another pandemic, and history shows exactly where that kind of imbalance leads. He connects that global tension directly to what is happening inside your own relationships, because the same failure to listen, the same refusal to co-create, shows up at the kitchen table and in the boardroom. Simon challenges the idea that vulnerability means broadcasting your emotions online, arguing that true safety comes only when you sit across from someone you trust and say the hard thing out loud. He lays out a simple reframe for capitalism itself, one built around purpose first, people second, and profit third, and shows how that same hierarchy applies to how you show up at work and at home. Walk away from this conversation with a clearer picture of who you actually work for and why getting that answer right changes everything. Simon’s books: Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don't Together Is Better: A Little Book of Inspiration Find Your Why: A Practical Guide for Discovering Purpose for You and Your Team The Infinite Game Start with Why 15th Anniversary Edition: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action In this episode you will: Learn why broadcasting vulnerability online gives you likes but not the safety you are actually looking for, and what real vulnerability requires. Discover why the metrics you use to measure a good day, productivity, followers, titles, are actively working against your sense of worth and what to track instead. Understand how to co-create boundaries in relationships and at work so both sides feel heard rather than managed. Recognize the social ripples that fear creates around AI and economic inequality so you can respond thoughtfully rather than react from panic. Reframe what it means to live a life of service, whether you lead a company, a team, or just show up daily for the people around you. - The Physiology of Optimism, Reclaiming Our Humanity, and Accessing Your Soul’s Wisdom to Find Your “Why” | Simon Sinek
What if your purpose isn’t something you need to find, but something you need to remember? In this wide-ranging, eye-opening episode of Mayim Bialik's Breakdown, Simon Sinek reveals why fulfillment, optimism, and meaning don’t come from chasing success, titles, or external validation, but from looking inward. As technology and AI reshape work, relationships, and identity, Simon explains why understanding your WHY is more important than ever, and how leaning into timeless human skills can help you thrive in a rapidly changing world. Simon goes far beyond leadership theory and gets deeply human. He breaks down: - Why who you are and what you’re meant to do may already be inside you, shaped by your values, DNA, and life journey - How to think about identity beyond job titles and surface-level roles - Why your passions, frustrations, and questions about the world are clues to your purpose - How discovering your personal WHY leads to a more resilient, meaningful, and fulfilling life - Why purpose matters more than ever in the age of AI (and why trying to “outcompete” technology is the wrong goal) - Why we’re expecting more meaning from work than any generation before us - Why Simon is a perpetual optimist and truly believes anyone can find fulfillment in whatever work they do - Real, science-backed benefits of a positive mindset - Why elite athletes and longevity-obsessed people may actually end up with shorter lifespans - Why conflict is unavoidable, but peaceful resolution is always possible - Responsibilities of leaders (and why leadership is about service, not status) - Key differences in how men and women tend to lead (and why both styles matter) - Why you sometimes have to fail before you can succeed - How to know when it’s time to move on from a work relationship that no longer serves you And perhaps most hopeful of all: Why Simon finds real optimism in young people choosing connection over status, and why the future belongs not to the most productive, but to the most human. If you’re questioning your career, your purpose, your leadership style, or simply how to live well in an uncertain world, this conversation will challenge how you think, and might just change how you live! - Simon Sinek and Bob Chapman, An Experiment in Humanity
A few months ago, our friend Simon Sinek visited our BW Papersystems location in Phillips, WI to record an episode of his "A Bit of Optimism" podcast with Barry-Wehmiller Chairman Bob Chapman. That episode of Simon's podcast is out now. I highly encourage you to listen to it or watch the video version on You Tube, which is almost a mini documentary. We're going to bring you that Town Hall, which is a great dialogue between Bob and Simon, but also includes a couple questions from the audience, including the high school aged son of one of our team members that is a big fan of Simon's and was very excited to talk to him. Also, Simon and Bob talk about the 10 th anniversary revised and expanded edition of Bob and Raj Sisodia's book, Everybody Matters: The Extraordinary Power of Caring for Your People Like Family , which is available now. Find out more about that at everybodymattersbook.com. So, here is a companion piece to Simon Sinek's A Bit of Optimism podcast featuring Bob Chapman and Barry-Wehmiller. Together, they explore the foundational role of friendships, belonging, and purpose in building meaningful lives and relationships. Jay opens up about his own transformation and the early influence of Simon’s book Start with Why , while Simon reflects on the personal journey behind his body of work, emphasizing that all leadership is, at its core, about human connection. They speak candidly about how burnout often stems from loneliness, the fragile nature of adult friendships, the difficulty many have in celebrating others’ success, and the healing power of emotional honesty in relationships. With wisdom, humor, and emotional clarity, Simon breaks down how we can show up more authentically for ourselves and for those we love—even when it’s uncomfortable. Simon Sinek is an optimist and author, as we discuss in the show today. Simon is best known for his TED Talk on the concept of WHY (62M views) , and his video on millennials in the workplace (80M views in 7 days). Simon is also a bestselling author including global bestseller Start with WHY, Leaders Eat Last and The Infinite Game. In addition, Simon is the founder of The Optimism Company, a leadership learning and development company, and he publishes other inspiring thinkers and doers through his publishing partnership with Penguin Random House called Optimism Press. In Today's Discussion with Simon Sinek We Discuss: 1. The Makings of Simon Sinek: In what ways does Simon believe that his parents and upbringing shaped who he is today? What does Simon want to be when he grows up? What was the catalytic moment to the "Simon Sinek brand"? When was that big break moment? 2. Identity: Simon has said before, "I define myself by who I am and not what I do". Is it wrong to define yourself by what you do? What do you do if you do not know who you are? What do you do if you do not like the answers to who you are? Is it possible to change who you are? What does that process look like? What is Simon's biggest advice to those looking to find a greater sense of self and identity? 3. Trust: Does Simon start relationships with inherent trust and it is there to be lost or no trust and it is there to be gained over time? When has someone broken Simon's trust? How did it impact how he approaches trust today? In the case of cheating in a relationship, does Simon believe it is possible to regain trust over time? Simon has said before, "trust is built on telling the truth". Does it ever make sense or is even right to tell a little white lie in a relationship? 4. Creating Safe Spaces: How can we create safe spaces for our partners to be their full selves? Does this differ professionally and personally? What are the biggest mistakes people make in building safe spaces? 5. Listening: What does great listening in a relationship mean? How can we do it better? Often people jump from listening to solution mode, is that wrong? Why does Simon have a rule of “no crying alone”. What does it do and how is it productive? When was the last time Simon cried? 6. Simon Sinek: AMA: What is success to you? Can one be “successful” and unhappy? What is the difference between happiness and joy?

- Start With Why & Find Your Why by Simon Sinek: How to stop being boring and be more interesting
About the Book In 2009, Simon Sinek started a movement to help people become more inspired at work, and in turn inspire their colleagues and customers. Since then, millions have been touched by the power of his ideas, including more than 28 million who’ve watched his TED Talk based on START WITH WHY — the third most popular TED video of all time. Sinek starts with a fundamental question: Why are some people and organizations more innovative, more influential, and more profitable than others? Why do some command greater loyalty from customers and employees alike? Even among the successful, why are so few able to repeat their success over and over? START WITH WHY shows that the leaders who’ve had the greatest influence in the world all think, act, and communicate the same way — and it’s the opposite of what everyone else does. Sinek calls this powerful idea The Golden Circle, and it provides a framework upon which organizations can be built, movements can be led, and people can be inspired. And it all starts with WHY. Find Your Why picks up where Start With Why left off. It shows you how to apply Simon Sinek’s powerful insights so that you can find more inspiration at work — and in turn inspire those around you. With detailed exercises, illustrations, and action steps for every stage of the process, Find Your Why can help you address many important concerns, including: * What if my WHY sounds just like my competitor’s? * Can I have more than one WHY? * If my work doesn’t match my WHY, what should I do? * What if my team can’t agree on our WHY? Source: amazon.com About the Author Described as “a visionary thinker with a rare intellect,” Simon teaches leaders and organizations how to inspire people. Whatever you do, whether it’s selling shoes, making clothes, preparing accounts, cooking food or defending tax evaders is boring. (Unless you are an astronaut or epidemiologist). When we attempt to only differentiate ourselves based on what we do, we end up blending into the beigeness of that job title or industry. This is relevant to teams, companies, and individuals. The ‘what’ and ‘how’ are of course important because ‘why’ can be abstract and big. But your ‘what’ and ‘how’ become much more interesting when you start with ‘why’. Using your ‘why’ is a great way to pique curiosity and encourage people to start
- Embrace a Just Cause, with Simon Sinek
Simon Sinek: The Infinite Game Simon Sinek is an unshakable optimist. He is best known for popularizing the concept of WHY, which he described in his first TED Talk in 2009. That talk went on to become the second most watched TED Talk of all time, today surpassing 50 million views. His interview on millennials in the workplace propelled his name to be the fifth most searched term on YouTube in 2017. Simon is the author of five bestselling books, including Start With Why *, Leaders Eat Last *, and his newest book, The Infinite Game *. In this conversation, Simon and I discuss why he doesn’t believe these are unprecedented times, the difference between a finite and infinite game, and the distinction between a why and a just cause. We also detail how to uncover a just cause and five standards that an effective just cause must meet. Key Points Our products and services are some of the things we use to advance our cause. They are not themselves the cause. -Simon Sinek A just cause embraces five standards: For something: affirmative and optimistic. Inclusive: open to all those who would like to contribute Service-oriented: for the primary benefit of others Resilient: able to endure political, technological and cultural change Idealistic: big, bold and ultimately unachievable In the infinite game, the only real competitor is yourself. -Simon Sinek Resources Mentioned The Infinite Game * by Simon Sinek Live Online Classes by Simon Sinek Book Notes Download my highlights from The Infinite Game in PDF format (free membership required).
