  • #711: Is a Computer Science Degree Still Worth the Debt?, with Ron Lieber
    Afford Anything®

I sat down with Ron Lieber, the New York Times “Your Money” columnist, to tackle one of the most stressful financial decisions any family faces: the cost of college. With headlines screaming about AI-driven job market disruptions and tuition hitting record highs, we’re digging into the math and the mindset shifts required to navigate higher education in 2026. We explore whether a computer science degree is still a “safe bet,” how to find the “return on friendship,” and why your strategy for negotiating financial aid needs to start with empathy. Listen Here Apple Podcasts Spotify Youtube Key Takeaways The $31,000 Safety Zone: Undergraduates should aim to keep total federal borrowing around $31,000. This creates a manageable monthly payment of roughly $350–$400, which is a reasonable bet even in an uncertain economy. Longevity of the Degree: While entry-level STEM jobs are facing a short-term squeeze from large language models, the long-term data still holds: bachelor’s degree holders out-earn non-degree holders by hundreds of thousands of dollars over their lifetime. The “Return on Friendship”: We often ignore the social capital of college. Ron emphasizes shopping for schools with strong alumni “binds”—networks where graduates actively “throw the rope back” to help new alumni land their first roles. Negotiating with Empathy: Financial aid officers often earn less than the families they are helping. Approach these conversations with kindness and human connection rather than treating it like a high-stakes used car sale. The Community College “90th Percentile”: Using community college as a 2+2 launching pad is a brilliant money-saver, but it requires high-level “executive functioning” to ensure every credit transfers and that you don’t lose time in the workforce. • Is a Computer Science Degree Still Worth the Debt?, with Ron Lieber

#711: A computer science degree used to feel like a sure thing. Job placement rates topped 90 percent. Starting salaries cleared $80,000. You could do the math on your student loans before you enrolled. That math doesn't work the same way anymore. New York Times "Your Money" columnist Ron Lieber joins us to walk through what families actually need to know before borrowing for college. He covers how to use the federal College Scorecard to look up earnings by school and by major. He explains why the scariest student loan headlines are almost always about graduate school rather than undergraduate debt. And he makes the case that liberal arts majors tend to catch up to their STEM peers by mid-career - even if the early numbers don't show it. Lieber also makes a case that the financial return on college extends beyond salary data. Alumni networks, mentorship, and lifelong friendships all factor into the equation. He suggests asking schools pointed questions about reunion attendance and alumni giving rates as a way to gauge how connected - and how useful - a community actually stays after graduation. On the debt question, Lieber draws a clear line between federal undergraduate loans, which cap around $31,000, and the more dangerous combinations of Parent PLUS loans and private debt that drive the horror stories you see in the news. He also addresses the community college path in detail - including what it actually takes to pull it off without losing time or credits along the way. The conversation closes with a framework for parents: keep sparking conversations with your kids, stay curious about what they're drawn to, and treat yourself less as an advice-giver and more as someone planting seeds. • NYT’s Ron Lieber: ‘These people are not going to win.'
    An Arm and a Leg

Thirty-six hours before his wife was scheduled for a major surgery, New York Times personal finance columnist Ron Lieber got a letter in the mail that sent him reeling. Insurance was denying prior authorization for the surgery. The only way forward would be to appeal the decision. But it was Saturday night, and the surgery was Monday morning. There wouldn’t be any time. Should they even go to the hospital? They decided to bet on being able to reverse the denial later on, but the last minute coverage questions left Ron’s wife, New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor, going into surgery that Monday with a brand new sense of stress and anxiety. And along with worrying how his wife's surgery would go (spoiler: it was successful), and whether they’d end up on the hook for a bajillion dollars, it left Ron to wonder why no one had given them a heads-up earlier. He set out to find answers — and whether there might be a way to prevent these last-minute denials from sneaking up on other people. Ron turned to his "Your Money" newsletter subscribers for ideas, and eventually published a draft letter in his New York Times column that doctors and other health care providers could give their patients to better prepare them for insurance curveballs. Check out the column here – and consider passing it along to any health care workers whose patients you think might benefit. Here’s a transcript of this episode . Send your stories and questions. • How Much Should You Pay for College? with Ron Lieber (Encore)

After 15 years of financial reporting, Ron Lieber reports that “No consumer decision inspires more confusion and emotion than the question of what to pay for college,” which is understandable since four years at many state schools now costs over $100k in tuition and four years of private school can run over $300k! The "Your Money" columnist for the New York Times, Ron is the author ofThe Price You Pay for College, in which he lays out critical, in-depth information about one of the most important financial decisions your family will ever make. He explains that not only is college ludicrously expensive, but the admissions process is purposefully opaque, so it’s hard to know if you/your kid will get in and whether or not you/your kid will be able to afford to go. By throwing himself head-first into this stormy, complicated sea, Ron helps the reader find the best college or university for them, understand financial aid, and not destroy their family's savings in the process. His new online course about merit aid will help parents like you find grants and scholarships for which your child is eligible. Ron Lieber is a proud alumnus of Amherst College. Among his previous books is the bestseller, The Opposite of Spoiled: Raising Kids Who Are Grounded, Generous, and Smart About Money, which he discussed with me on episode #4 of Crazy Money. Sending a kid to college these days can cost well into the six figures, whether you're looking at state universities or small private colleges. Ron Lieber is the “Your Money” columnist for The New York Times and the author of several books, including The Opposite of Spoiled . His latest bestseller, named one of the "Best Books of 2021" by NPR and just out in paperback, is THE PRICE YOU PAY FOR COLLEGE: An Entirely New Road Map for the Biggest Financial Decision Your Family Will Ever Make – a book about who pays what, and why, and how the whole system got so complicated... • 170. Ron Lieber – Priceless Advice on Parenting, Money, and College Admissions

Ron Lieber is the author of the “Your Money” column for The New York Times and the author or co-author of five books. His most recent book is called “The Price You Pay for College: An Entirely New Roadmap for the Biggest Financial Decision Your Family Will Ever Make.” He’s also written for Fast Company for The Wall Street Journal and for Fortune Magazine. Ron is a three-time winner of the Gerald Loeb Award, which is the most prestigious award in business journalism. Part of that is because his writing is not only enjoyable to read, but it’s also practical. In this interview on the School For Good Living Podcast, Ron joins Brilliant Miller to discuss his book “The Opposite of Spoiled: Raising Kids Who Are Grounded, Generous, and Smart About Money,” which if you are raising kids, you probably hope they’ll turn out that way, not spoiled. This interview includes a lot about money and parenting, including allowance, whether we should pay it, what its relationship to chores should be, how to approach it, and even what should be off-limits for kids, if anything, when it comes to how they spend their own money. Ron also shares his thoughts on how much the tooth fairy should pay for a tooth, which he answers in a very interesting way, and how to answer kids’ questions about money. Throughout Ron’s book, and in this interview, he shares many ways to approach talking about and using money to use it as a key for good living. “Spoiled is a passive verb. Kids aren’t born that way, they are made. So I think that would be a pretty bad sin to commit unto them.” This week on the School for Good Living Podcast: Finding happiness in serving others Raising kids who aren’t spoiled Writing for others – “Service Journalism” Coming up with writing ideas Making money a key to good living without relying on it for happiness Resources Mentioned: The Opposite of Spoiled: Raising Kids Who Are Grounded, Generous, and Smart About Money The Price You Pay for College: An Entirely New Road Map for the Biggest Financial Decision Your Family Will Ever Make Connect With The Guest: Ron Lieber Subscribe and sign up for more! • Raising Unspoiled Kids, Money for Practice & Views on Investing in College with Ron Lieber

How do we give our kids what they need, while teaching them the value of what they have? My son, Ocean, has recently expressed his new business idea, Front Row Kids. He has a goal to "work to get money" because he "only has ten dollars, and he owes me five." 😂 I'm super proud of him, but it also made me wonder: if he's bringing up money, is it time to have the conversation about it's value? I feel like I'm not the only one who worries about how to raise their kids without spoiling them rotten, while also letting them thrive. What time is the right time to even talk to your kids about the practice of money? Today's guest, Ron Lieber, covers all this in his new book, The Price You Pay for College: An Entirely New Road Map for the Biggest Financial Decision Your Family Will Ever Make Ron explains that if you've never talked about money with your kids, they just won't have context. He also shares how to raise your kids to be grounded while not spoiling them. He cautions us on how important it is to be able and willing to have the conversation early and help our kids understand why you won't prioritize their wants, just because you have the money. Ron also tackles the approach of setting emotional and financial boundaries for your family. He shares advice on parental guilt, fear, why most parents fail to talk about money and what makes these topics so uncomfortable in the first place—things I sometimes struggle with myself with my own parenting. Luckily, Ron helps us navigate all of these difficult topics on today's episode! Ron Lieber Podcast Highlights How do you raise your kids to be grounded without being spoiled? What is the definition of success and how much is enough? Overthinking how to have a healthy relationship with your spouse and how to be a good dad. Don't think about financial boundaries as deprivation. Spend as safely as you can on what brings you joy, and cut out everything else. Setting emotional and financial boundaries with our families. Helping your kids understand the financial and educational systems. The silence around money that's hurting your children. How you can overcome your fear and guilt as a Dad around doing it wrong. How much do we give to our kids versus letting them pay/work for it on their own. How to help your child thrive in a creative way and encourage them to help themselves. • 1223: The Price You Pay for College with Ron Lieber, NYT Columnist

This episode originally aired on January 27, 2021. It is “the most complex and emotionally fraught financial decision that many families will ever make,” says my guest Ron Lieber about college. This high-stakes money move is a source of anxiety, stress and confusion. Too often, it leads us down the wrong path of over-borrowing for a school that under-delivers. In his latest book, The Price You Pay for College, Ron help readers make the most financially and emotionally-intelligent decision possible in selecting a school. We’ll discuss why the cost of college is SO high (over $300,000 for a private four-year college, on average), some secrets to paying for college (ever hear of merit aid?) and how to properly “value” the college experience, especially in the post-Covid world.
