It’s been 34 years since the stunning, untimely death of Jim Henson at the age of just 53. But, in the years since, Henson’s creations (aka The Muppets) have continued their reign on “Sesame Street”, at theme parks and in the movies. Jim Henson’s coterie of lovable characters is as present as ever. Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard (“A Beautiful Mind”, “Frost/Nixon”) takes on the legacy of the brilliant puppeteer and filmmaker in his deeply researched, playful and heartfelt documentary, “Jim Henson Idea Man”. Ron joins Ken on the pod to discuss how, years ago, a conversation with the late director Jonathan Demme spurred him on to start making documentaries, and why he finds it so challenging and rewarding. With his latest documentary, Ron has found a subject that both piques his curiosity and dovetails with some of the themes of his own life (early success on television followed by a successful career directing movies; the challenges of balancing one’s passion for work with commitment to family; and the excitement of the next project that always beckons). The result is one of Ron Howard’s most personal and fascinating documentaries to date. “Jim Henson Idea Man” is nominated for eight Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series and Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program. This week, I was so pleased to welcome back two friends & the hosts of The Film Stage's excellent podcast The B-Side, which covers movie stars in a fascinating way by focusing not on the films that made or kept them famous but the ones that actors made in between. A producer & filmmaker living in Pittsburgh, Dan Mecca started The Film Stage with Jordan Raup in college at Buffalo & Conor O'Donnell is a post-production supervisor based in New York City & also serves as a critic for The Film Stage. In the 39th episode of the podcast this season, the boys from The B-Side join me to discuss the career & main overarching theme that you will find in the filmography of child actor turned Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard. A man who's been working hard his entire life growing up on film sets where he'd see hundreds of craftsmen quietly executing their jobs with skill & precision in an industry that tends to overlook these individuals in favor of picture-perfect movie stars, Ron Howard is utterly fascinated by the working man. Particularly drawn to studying the work-life balance & the way we all struggle to care for family, friends, & ourselves while at the same time earning a living with purpose, since he stepped foot behind a camera, Howard's gravitated to these tales as a filmmaker. While we touch on numerous pictures that he's made and collaborators he's worked alongside throughout his career in this infectiously delightful & insightful feature-length conversation, we focus primarily on the films PARENTHOOD, THE PAPER, & THIRTEEN LIVES. The boys are joined by Academy Award winner Ron Howard to discuss his film debut in The Journey (the full movie from 1959), in which he starred opposite, you guessed it, Yul Brynner. Ron shares his vivid memories from the making of the film, including a life lesson Yul imparted on him at just four years old. He also sticks around to play a couple games with the guys and gives his recommendations for the best Yul movies. Afterwards, the boys receive a visit from Googly and meet Jeeves, Yul Brynner's personal butler. In Here's Looking at Yul, Kid, two friends (and sometimes Ron Howard) who had NEVER seen a movie starring Yul Brynner watch (but ONLY watch) his entire filmography. They will not be LISTENING to Yul. They will not be READING subtitles conveying what Yul has said. They will ONLY be LOOKING at Yul (kid). And they will record an entire commentary track for each film as they do so. It's Here's Looking at Yul, Kid! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The film Thirteen Lives is about the rescue of the Thai soccer team who were trapped in an underwater cave in 2018 for 18 days. Cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, who is Thai, knew that it was important to make the film seem as realistic as possible since everyone in Thailand was very familiar with the story. He liked director Ron Howard's movie Apollo 13, which vividly dramatized a real-life event, so he was excited to work with Howard on Thirteen Lives, a true story he was familiar with. After reading the script, Thirteen Lives was a movie he could clearly see in his head, because it dealt with people against the elements. Sayombhu decided to approach the film like a documentary, as though the viewer is right there in the cave with the characters. His first task was to think about how to shoot and light underwater, and he worked closely with the second unit crew to find the best methods. When shooting, Sayombhu did a lot of handheld camerawork, operating the B camera on first unit. He would actually occasionally duck underwater with the camera, so that it looked as dynamic as possible, even though the second unit handled most of the underwater work. The caves were all a set built in Australia, except for some exterior shots of the real cave in Thailand. Because the caves had no light sources at all, Sayombhu knew all the light had to be motivated. He had to pick the color and intensity of the light, and figure out where to place lights and cameras during the cave design set build. The actors became part of his lighting crew, since much of the light had to come from their flashlights and headlamps. Sayombhu would often ask them to hold the lights and point them up or down to help illuminate the scene- actors Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell practically became a part of the lighting crew, he jokes. We learn that it was a series of ambitions and dreams that didn't happen, that helped steer James D. Wilcox, ACE, into a vastly successful career as an editor and director. Hailing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and later, going on to attend Clark Atlanta University, James secured a series of internships that helped usher him into a career as a news editor. It was at that moment that James insists that editing found him and he later relocated to California. In this conversation, James talks about what it was like coming from Pittsburgh and having no linkage to Hollywood and yet, his journey led him to work with legendary director, Ron Howard and edit projects like Genius and Hillbilly Elegy. We get to discuss his latest film, also directed by Ron Howard, called Thirteen Lives, based on the real-life international story about a group of young soccer players and their coach who were rescued after being trapped for over two weeks in an underground cave in Thailand after a massive flood. James' other credits include My Wife and Kids, Soul Food, Dark Angel, Everybody Hates Chris, Reno 911!, CSI: Miami, Roots (2016) and Raising Dion. James has also worked with James Cameron, Mario Van Pebbles and Damon Wayans and is also a member of the Directors Guild of America and on the diversity committee of the Motion Picture Editors Guild.
https://fiftytwoconvos.com Born and raised in Antigua and Barbuda, Ron Howard, aka GuavaDeArtist is a self-taught artist who has been drawing from the age of two. After studying TV, video production, (major) and graphic design (minor) in Canada he moved back to Antigua in 2005 with hopes of applying his skills gained in college to his country of birth. After a couple of attempts to integrate himself into the TV Video Production field in his home country, Ron, GuavaDeArtist settled for a job with his minor and graphic designer at Sun printing and publishing, and newspaper and publishing house (which no longer exists). There he took on two jobs, Junior graphic designer and editorial cartoonist, wanting to explore his potential as an artist, Ron, aka GuaveDeArtist requested to work freelance doing solely the editorial cartoons. He was then given the opportunity to travel more, which helped him to develop his skills teaching himself more art techniques which gave life to his art style. Though some may label his work as pop street urban contemporary or graffiti Ron, aka GuavaDeArtist has coined his style.
