In this episode, Nick Offerman talks about his new book Little Woodchucks — a playful yet purposeful guide to woodworking for kids and families. Through it, he shares a deeper message about self-sufficiency, creativity, and resisting the pull of technology and corporate convenience. Offerman reflects on the joy of making things by hand, the importance of teaching those skills to the next generation, and why diversity, community, and decency are essential to keeping the human spirit alive. Ruggedness, dependability, and handiness define a lot of outdoor archetypes, from the ski patroller to the river guide to the park ranger. So why would you find all three in a famous actor? Maybe because the actor in question—Nick Offerman—is an avid outdoorsman in his own right. Surely you know Nick from one of his many memorable roles, like Ron Swanson on Parks And Recreation and General Sidney in the latest Mission Impossible . And, when he’s not acting or performing on comedy tours, you can find Nick paddling the Los Angeles River or scrambling up peaks in the nearest National Park. Relying on himself in a pinch informs everything Nick does, from acting to woodworking. And his new book, Little Woodchucks: Offerman Woodshop’s Guide to Tools and Tomfoolery , is Nick’s gospel of do-it-yourselfedness, a starting point to building a tough and resourceful identity. Because eventually, we’re all gonna have to fix a flat tire or build a little shelter in the woods.
It's less than a week until the 2024 US presidential election and who better to discuss the government with than 'Parks and Rec' star and comedian Nick Offerman. The last time Mehdi spoke with Nick about current events was back in May 2021, right before Nick was to testify before Congress about the Covid-19 vaccine. More recently, Nick released a couple of comedic songs to encourage Americans to vote for Kamala Harris and defeat Donald Trump (hopefully) forever. Mehdi and Nick rant about the Donald Trump x Elon Musk teamup and the influence of corporate money on our media and politics. " The corporate interests that generally own the mainstream media so that no matter what messaging you get, it's never the fully straight dope," Nick tells Mehdi. "You can count the politicians in Congress who aren't taking corporate money on two fingers." Mehdi asks Nick about his recent role playing the president of the United States in Alex Garland's hit film 'Civil War' and what Americans can learn from the cautionary tale about the waning days of a civil war fought on US soil. When discussing Trump, Nick humorously describes in graphic detail what he imagines the former president does on his golden toilet. They finish the conversation discussing the strengths and flaws of the Harris campaign, including her stance on Gaza and US arms sales to Israel. When actor Nick Offerman first got together with actress Megan Mullally, she had just won her first Emmy for Will and Grace and he was living in a dirt basement in Silver Lake. They bought a fancy house, he jumped into his new swimming pool and got through about a song and a half before realizing he couldn’t lay around smoking weed and listening to Neil Young all day. Sam asks Nick how he brings purpose into his life no matter what he’s doing, from grocery shopping to starring in a new film like Civil War. They also discuss his method for choosing projects and which writers and thinkers he admires most. Follow Nick Offerman @nickofferman on Instagram and @Nick_Offerman on X. This holiday weekend, we’re revisiting one of our favorite talks with actor, author, and woodworker Nick Offerman. We begin with his new book, Where the Deer and the Antelope Play: The Pastoral Observations of One Ignorant American Who Loves to Walk Outside (5:05), which was inspired by Nick’s upbringing in rural Minooka, Illinois (6:12), the writings of poet Wendell Berry (7:30), and his experiences with the late Sam Shepard at Steppenwolf Theatre (8:08). Shortly after working with Shepard, Offerman began to find his footing—on and off the stage—as a performer, carpenter, and fight choreographer (9:35). He reflects on his galvanizing role in the film Going All the Way (15:14), the guiding principles of George Saunders (20:00), lessons from his sensei Shōzō Satō (25:26), the start of his nearly two-decade marriage with actress Megan Mullally (26:30), the phone call that changed his life (35:50), and the complicated legacy of Ron Swanson from Parks and Recreation (41:45). Then, before we go, we return to the timely (and urgent) message of his new book (46:47), a piece by Jeff Tweedy (49:50), and words by Wendell Berry (51:58). Nick Offerman joins Kyle Meredith to discuss his latest stand-up tour, All Rise, which finds the humorist widening the scope of our current political era to encompass the follies of all humankind. We hear about Offerman's ties to Kentucky farming through his friendship with author/poet Wendell Berry, whose 2017 documentary Look & See Offerman produced, teaming up with wife Megan Mullally to direct the latest stage show, and his musical collaborations with Mark Rivers (of Mouse Rat, for you Parks and Rec fans) and Wilco's Jeff Tweedy. In fact, Nick and Kyle wax deep on the joys of Wilco as well as They Might Be Giants, whose video for "The Greatest" features Offerman in a starring role.
