  • 187. Experimenting, Failing, and Finding Your Job Fit - Catalyze Your Career

Rethink career success by testing, adapting, and staying open to unexpected opportunities. Career planning isn’t as straightforward as we often assume—but according to Dorie Clark , that’s actually a good thing. Instead of following a rigid path, she believes we should be “treating our careers like a series of experiments”—testing, iterating, and staying open to unexpected opportunities. "People assume they need to have everything mapped out for the next twenty years," Clark explains. "But in reality, careers are built through testing, learning, and adapting—just like a scientific hypothesis." As a bestselling author and career strategist, Clark has spent years studying how professionals can future-proof their careers in an unpredictable world. She shares why informational interviews, LinkedIn strategy, and quarterly career check-ins are essential tools for anyone looking to make a career shift. “You don’t want to be so mired in your plan that you can’t take advantage of unexpected opportunities,” she says. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart , Clark joins host Matt Abrahams to challenge traditional career advice and explore strategic personal branding, the power of weak ties in networking, and why “reinvention isn’t a one-time event—it’s a habit.” This episode is brought to you by LinkedIn. • EP13: Playing the Long Game with Dorie Clark

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” asks Karin Reed. She argues this question is just as relevant for adults as it is for children, leading to a discussion about balancing immediate productivity with strategic, long-term goals. In this episode, Karin talks with Wall Street Journal bestselling author Dorie Clark about the critical practice of long-term thinking in a society fixated on immediate results. Dorie, known for her work in the Harvard Business Review and Forbes, shares insights from her book, “The Long Game.” She highlights the struggle of finding time for strategic thinking in our busy lives and emphasizes the importance of structural changes for sustained success. Dorie provides practical advice for leaders to foster a long-term mindset despite short-term pressures and introduces the concept of “optimizing for interesting”—pursuing meaningful activities that lead to fulfillment and success. Her personal anecdotes illustrate how small, consistent steps yield significant outcomes. She also discusses how to effectively communicate strategic visions, balancing humility with necessary self-promotion. Her straightforward approach helps listeners share achievements without boasting. Dorie’s advice emphasizes the power of small, consistent steps and pursuing meaningful activities to achieve long-term success. Tune in to gain invaluable insights from Dorie Clark and learn how to develop a strategic mindset and optimize your path to fulfillment and achievement! Quotes “I’m always interested in questions about how people make meaning in their lives. And it seems like in our modern society, there’s really kind of two pat answers that, in the discourse, are often viewed as diametrically opposed… You optimize for money or for meaning. And I actually think that there’s a useful third way that we can be thinking about, which is optimizing for interesting. (08:29 | Dorie Clark) “If you’re optimizing for money, a lot of times, we know, culturally, people can be quite unhappy. Money gets you to a certain place, but it doesn’t get you to the finish line. It is necessary but not sufficient. But if you’re optimizing for interesting, you’re choosing things that are genuinely meaningful and cool to you.” (09:18 | Dorie Clark) “It’s important to remind people: It’s not that whenever you were pursuing whatever goal it was, or career it was, you weren’t just sitting eating bonbons. You actually did things. You met people, you made connections, you learned skills. And many of those skills and many of those connections are probably transferable. It also means that you see the world in a slightly different way, which sometimes can be extremely helpful.” (25:13 | Dorie Clark) “One thing that I want to encourage people to think about—and this is a concept that I share in the long game—is that, ultimately, if we’re all sort of suffering under the yoke of being pulled in too many directions, having too many things to do, we have to recognize that, inevitably, there are going to be times and there are going to be moments when that is necessary. About short term results, sometimes you gotta just make it happen. But it’s also true that if we want to be smart about long-term thinking, we can’t always be doing that.” (27:44 | Dorie Clark) Links Connect with Dorie Clark: https://www.dorieclark.com/thelonggame Connect with Karin Reed: Website: www.speakerdynamics.com Speaker Dynamics University: https://university.speakerdynamics.com/ Speaker Dynamics on Instagram: https

  • How to Focus on Long-Term Thinking in a Short-Term World with Dorie Clark
    Free Time with Jenny Blake

“Whenever you have a choice of what to do, choose the more interesting path." In honor of our upcoming Free Time x Long Game IRL event in Miami on February 1 and 2 (it’s not too late to join !), today I’m bringing you a favorite episode from the earliest days of the Free Time pod. In this conversation with Dorie Clark—aka “DC”—one of my closest friendtors, we discuss how she "optimizes for interesting," says no to good opportunities, builds relationships by following her "no asks for a year" rule, and when to call on trusted advisors to ensure you don't quit something too soon. We're discussing her bestselling fourth book, The Long Game: How to Be a Long-Term Thinker in a Short-Term World —be sure to grab your copy for even more insights on how to apply strategic thinking to your biggest vision. This episode originally aired on September 28, 2021. More About Dorie: Dorie Clark helps individuals and companies get their best ideas heard in a crowded, noisy world. She has been named one of the Top 50 business thinkers in the world by Thinkers50, and was honored as the #1 Communication Coach in the world by the Marshall Goldsmith Leading Global Coaches Awards. Dorie is the author of The Long Game: How to Be a Long-Term Thinker in a Short-Term World , Reinventing You , Stand Out , Entrepreneurial You . 🌟 3 Key Takeaways Building and Maintaining Relationships: Dorie doesn’t make any significant asks from new connections for at least a year. This strategy is aimed at building genuine, agenda-free relationships, nurturing them over time, rather than using them for immediate benefits. Optimizing for Interesting Opportunities: Pursue what genuinely interests you rather than feeling pressured to follow a predetermined passion or path. Balancing Opportunities and Saying: It’s a skill to decline opportunities, especially alluring seemingly “free” ones. Evaluate opportunities based on alignment with your long-term goals and the true cost of saying yes, including opportunity cost, time, and energy. 📝 Permission “You don’t have to do this,” for types of events that you hate attending! • 218. Strategizing for Work and Life feat. Dorie Clark
    unSILOed with Greg LaBlanc

The world seems to be moving faster and faster but there is always a need to plan for the longer arc of life. Having a strategy lets you set short goals while achieving progress toward your longer ones. Now more than ever people need to be intentional about the strategies they use in creating a career. Building these strategies in different areas of your life is what today’s episode is all about. Dorie Clark is a teacher at Duke and Colombia University’s business schools, a speaker who has given lectures from Harvard Business School to Google HQ, and a prolific author of the books Stand Out , Reinventing You , Entrepreneurial You , and her newest book The Long Game: How to Be a Long-Term Thinker in a Short-Term World . Dorie and Greg talk about playing the long game, and what that means in your business life and personal life. They also talk about what it looks like to think long term in a world where short term needs are always pressing, and how to think about time allocation for the important things in life. Episode Quotes: The power of stories for behavioral change 24:08: A story is a really good way to get in the side door. So that it's essentially evading people's objections because if you're telling somebody: “research says…”, "Do this or do that," there's often just a lot of backlash that people have:” I couldn't do that.” But if they're hearing a narrative, which is not, "Oh, you have to do this," but it's, "Well, here, let me tell you about somebody you know, like you, who did that thing," And they realize, it's a lot less threatening of a way to present information, and it lets it roll around in people's brains and say, "Oh, I'm not that different from that person. Maybe I could try it.’ And that can become really powerful. 02:48: There's almost no one in the world that thinks that strategy is a bad thing. It's not like there's an anti-strategy contingent arguing against it. Everybody thinks it's good. Everybody pays lip service to it. But the problem is that almost no one does it. Why do we need a coach? 25:38: The answer is we don't always. Sometimes a book is perfectly sufficient for what you want to do. It depends on how important the issue is to you and how detailed of an instruction you require. Overweighting our short-term thinking can be a liability 17:50: If we're investing money, if we're investing our finances, everybody understands that if your portfolio is overweight in a certain asset, that may be great while that asset is performing well, but it is extremely dangerous over the long term because there probably is going to be some reversal. • Networking in a New Niche and Becoming Broadway Investors with Dorie Clark and Alisa Cohn
    Pivot with Jenny Blake

Have you ever gotten a sudden sense of certainty that you need to pursue something — maybe something totally different than your career or typical areas of interest? I had the pleasure of podcasting in-person with today’s guests, Alisa Cohn and Dorie Clark, to learn more about how their interest sparked to co-found a Broadway theater investing company together. Building upon their successful careers in the business arena, we talk about what it’s like to start from scratch in a new industry when it comes to networking, investing, collaborating, and experimenting. More About Dorie: Dorie Clark helps individuals and companies get their best ideas heard in a crowded, noisy world. She is a keynote speaker and teaches executive education for Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and Columbia Business School. Dorie is the author of The Long Game: How to Be a Long-Term Thinker in a Short-Term World (her latest), Reinventing You , Stand Out , and Entrepreneurial You . More About Alisa: Alisa Cohn has been coaching startup founders to grow into world-class CEOs for nearly 20 years. She is the author of From Start-Up to Grown-Up . A one-time startup CFO, strategy consultant, and current angel investor and advisor, she was named the number one “Global Guru” of startups in 2021 and has worked with startup companies such as Venmo, Etsy, and more. She was also featured on Tim Ferriss’ podcast in episode 539 , where she shared publicly for the first time that she coached his team for several years 🌟3 Key Takeaways: When you’re starting something in a new industry, build your network in that direction by hosting, not just waiting for invites. Try Alisa’s go-to opener for conferences—so simple it’s easy to skip: “Hi, my name is X, What’s yours?” At networking or professional events, most people are there because they want to make connections. On failure: There is a difference between asking yourself, “Did you make a good decision?” and, “Did you get a good outcome?” If you are confident in your decisions, the outcome becomes less important. ✅Next Action: Host an event in the next few months where you can bring together a variety of people who wouldn’t ordinarily meet each other, ideally in an industry you are passionate about (even if you’re new to the space). 📘Books : Free Time: Lose The Busywork, Love Your Business , Pivot: The Only Move That Matters Is Your Next One Life After College From Start-Up to Grown-Up: Grow Your Leadership to Grow Your Business by Alisa Cohn The Long Game: How to Be a Long-Term Thinker in a Short-Term World by Dorie Clark 🔗Resources : Dorie on the web , Instagram: @dorieclark , LinkedIn , Facebook , YouTube Alisa on the web , Twitter: @AlisaCohn , LinkedIn: @AlisaCohn Alisa’s Podcast: From Start-Up to

Forbes has declared that “her insights connect marketing, social media, communications, learning technologies, and personal discovery to give us a blueprint for success in the future economy.” She is a graduate of Harvard Divinity School, a producer of a multiple Grammy-winning jazz album, and a Broadway investor. Episode Highlights Leading with “the fun part” … I kicked off the interview by asking Dorie about some of her interesting activities like investing in Broadway shows and producing jazz albums. This led her to one of the big ideas of her latest book The Long Game … Optimize for interesting. “We’re often told to follow our passion but many don’t know what their passion is—they have passion shame.” That’s why Dorie encourages people to optimize for what’s interesting in their lives. If there’s a seed of something you like, work to add more of that in your work. In turn, this helps you stand out as a personal brand. What if you’re stuck? What if you don’t know what the inserting part of your life is? Dorie had a couple of idea starters for this. “First, what did you like to do as a kid? Chances are, you still like the same things now.” You’ll have to listen to the show for her other handy hacks. “I look for positive constraints in business,” says Dorie. “Constraints can make us more creative and efficient.” She then noted Parkinson’s Law, which says that work will expand to fill the time allotted. What brand has made Dorie smile recently? Dorie cited the fun summer (and sustainable) shoe brand Suavs for all of the good they’re doing with their innovative products. “We all consume too much plastic. It’s good to see someone doing something about it.” To learn more about Dorie and to take her free self-assessment that goes with The Long Game , head to dorieclark.com/thelonggame . • 76: Stay Open to Reinvent Yourself with Dorie Clark
    Work From The Inside Out

As a child Dorie Clark loved to write and use her imagination. Back then, she wanted to become a spy and was intrigued by the character James Bond. Her parents would take her on beach vacations, but she preferred to stay inside and write. By age 12, she was submitting poems to New Yorker magazine, none were published, but that didn’t stop her from trying! Dorie went to college at 14, studied philosophy, and went on to earn her Masters in Divinity at Harvard. She then launched a career in journalism as a political writer with a newspaper in Boston. On September 10, 2001, yes… the day before 9/11, she was laid off from her job. Needless to say, it was a devastating time. Through her networks, Dorie quickly found freelance writing jobs and realized she needed to develop a plan. She never wanted to be caught off guard ever again. Within a year, she was working as the spokesperson on a presidential campaign and subsequently, worked on other political campaigns. Dorie then pivoted from politics, becoming the Executive Director of a nonprofit in Boston where she improved bike riding safety and accessibility across the region. That experience lit the lightbulb on the entrepreneurial experience that she stepped into next. In this week’s Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn about Dorie Clark’s career journey: Dorie has been described by the New York Times as an expert at self-reinvention and helping others make changes in their lives. As a consultant, speaker, author, teacher, and coach, Dorie Clark helps individuals and companies get their best ideas heard in a crowded, noisy world. Dorie is a frequent contributor to the Harvard Business Review and the author of 3 books: Reinventing You , Stand Out, and Entrepreneurial You. • Reinvention is Building a Conversation with Dorie Clark
    The Conversation Factory

Today's conversation with Dorie Clark taught me some essential lessons about how to build a following around one's ideas - which is no surprise - Dorie has given several excellent TEDx talks on just this topic, and I'll summarize my insights from our conversation in a moment. I learned something more surprising during my conversation with Dorie - that she is living her principles, constantly. I also learned that she's into musicals, big time. I wasn't expecting to learn this about Dorie, but I followed the conversation, as you'll see. Dorie is the author of a trilogy of books all about reinvention. Starting in 2013, Dorie wrote "Reinventing You: Define Your Brand, Imagine Your Future" which she followed up in 2015 with "Stand Out: How to Find your Breakthrough Idea and build a following around it" which was named Inc Magazine's #1 Leadership book of that year. Most recently, in 2017, she penned "Entrepreneurial You: Monetize Your Expertise, Create Multiple Income Streams, and Thrive." Maybe I'm just a cynic, but I often expect people who have this much time to write about their ideas to have less time to apply them. Dorie walks her talk, however. The opening quote is about Dorie's dream to learn to write and produce musical theater...and how she's going about it - slowly building skills, insights and networks, long before she plans to tap them. If you take nothing else away from this episode, that alone is a solid gold lesson. This approach makes logical sense - you have to plant before you can reap - and networks are no different. What I loved learning about Dorie is that she's not sitting still - she still has dreams of constant reinvention and she's working to make those dreams possible, steadily. In the last several years in hosting this podcast, I've come to see conversations in a new light - sometimes they can seem like a wave, building, cresting and receding. Dorie certainly treats her own musical reinvention in this way - like a conversational wave she needs to build. But I've also learned that conversations also have key sizes that act differently - small, medium and large conversations are all essential to master, as a leader or facilitator, and with reinvention, this is still true. Dorie takes me through three key conversational size "phase transitions" in building a following around a breakthrough idea. You don't get to massive impact overnight. Zero to one: Start talking about your idea. It may seem obvious, but many people just keep their ideas and their dreams in their heads. Getting it out of your head is like Peter Thiel's Zero-to-One innovation and gets the ball rolling. One to Many: Finding ways to get to talk to many people about your ideas at once, like writing for a publication or speaking to a group. Many-to-Many: The goal, at the end of the day, is to develop a many-to-many conversation. You don't want to be the only person talking about your idea. For me, the more people who see conversations as something worth designing, the better it is for me and for the world (at least, that's how I see it) - which is why I keep making this show! This episode is full of other insights, like how to write a great headline or choose a collaborator for a project. For the show notes and links to Dorie's books and videos

    Women Wanting Women

Dorie Clark can help you better attract women. Dorie Clark can help you be more exciting to women. Dorie Clark can help you come off as more interesting and impressive when you meet women. This is important. Women are more attracted to people who are exciting and interesting and impressive. That’s why Dorie Clark can help you make yourself more attractive to women. Dorie Clark is an expert at self-reinvention and helping people change their lives. The New York Times Here’s the truth… Women are attracted to power and success and wealth. Women are attracted to leadership and ambition. This might sound “politically incorrect” or “superficial” but it’s not. It’s actually quite deep. It’s actually primal . It’s a primal thing. This is a primal thing, not a cultural thing. This attraction women feel is not a choice. All female animals in nature are attracted to success and leadership and ambition. Females of all species prefer to reproduce with a mate that has “high status.” Because our inner animals an innate drive to pass along the best possible genes to our offspring (in order for the offspring to have better chances of survival .) Females feel attraction for mates who have the highest status because the fact that the animal achieved high-status means they are stronger and savvier than the other animals they were competing with in their “community”. So they have better genes to pass along. That’s why females instinctively feel more attraction to higher-status suitors. That’s how it works. We can’t help but to feel this way, subconsciously. It’s a natural reaction. A physical instinct… So here’s the bottom line… If we want to be more attractive to the women we desire (and if we want to stay attractive in the eyes of the women we love) we have to be ambitious as a way of life. We have to try to always keep growing and developing in all areas of life. Because women think it’s hot when we live that way… Women think ambition is hot. Women think power, leadership and success are hot. Unfortunately, they don’t really teach us how to be powerful, successful leaders in school… (In traditional education they just train us to follow directions and conform to the group. And if all we ever do is follow directions and conform, we will find ourselves with the exact opposite of power, leadership and success!) So where can we learn the skills for power, leadership and success? In this episode of Women Wanting Women I interview Dorie Clark, who is not only a badass power lesbian, but she’s also a renowned and widely-sought-after teacher on the subject of power, leadership and success. During the interview Dorie Clark shares: The most important mindsets for success… Easy strategies for cultivating multiple sources of income… Vital tips for becoming the woman other people think of…AND A game plan for powerfully reinventing yourself after a breakup … Learn more about Dorie Clark and follow her on social media… Dorie Clark is a marketing strategist and speaker, author and a professor at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.
