Welcome back to the Sunday Service with Church and Vickers - we hope you’ve all had a peaceful cricketing week and a VERY joyous Christmas. This week is the big one. Some might even say it's monumental. It is, of course, the highly awaited Christmas special. And to mark this special day, Church and Vickers were treated to TWO guests. Beaming in from Melbourne, fresh after a 20-'wicketed' day at the MCG, Daniel Norcross and Andy Zaltzman continued to grace the airwaves long after their working day had concluded. The two Test Match Special giants debriefed the current tour down under, from England's woes both on and off the field, to Andy's masterful 5-course Christmas lunch, and Dan's involvement with the incredible Barmy Army. Andy discusses how his love for numbers, comedy, and cricket culminated in his arrival at the BBC, and Dan recounts orchestrating 1500 'Barmies' in a series of songs on Christmas Day. Also on the episode, Hector remedies his disappointing observations last week with a highlights reel from the IPL auction, Churchy frames the current state of affairs down under, and Hector whips out the quiz book. Church's sermon this week looks into the New Year, AND... it is finally here! Christmas has been and gone, but for one lucky listener, the celebrations are only just beginning. In a dramatic wheelspin, Church and Vickers reveal the winner of this year's Christmas Quiz. Thanks to our amazing sponsors at Newbery Cricket, the winner is taking home one of their fantastic Navarone cricket bats. Disclaimer: Make sure to look out for competitions in the New Year to be in with a chance of winning some premium cricket equipment. You can check out the first-rate equipment that Newbery has to offer here: https://newbery.co.uk/ A huge thank you to Daniel Norcross and Andy Zaltzman for joining us for our Christmas special - we hope that they have a brilliant conclusion to their Ashes tour. #551 Human Dodecapede - Richard has a new notebook and is making jokes that were topical in November 2024 (and probably still are) and has met one of his sporting heroes, for whom Rich is an unlikely hero. His guest this week is cricket statistician Andy Zaltzman. They talk about what it is to be a Taskmaster Champion, who might have had the most awkward introduction to their team on the show and the power of dressing like a snooker player. Also how Andy landed what must have been his two dream jobs, how to improve the game Howzat, self-playing Subbuteo, whether John Oliver is in danger in the USA, how Zaltzman has been podcasting even longer than the Podfather, whether cricket pads to Pakistan is coals to Newcastle and some unusual picks for a perennial qesugtion. Can Russell convince Andy to go to a Water Park? And can Andy convince Russell to visit an Ancient Greek Citadel? It’s a tussle for the ages. This episode of Five Brilliant Things all comes from the brains of comedian and cricket statistics royalty, Andy Zaltzman. It is, frankly, a fiesta of culture. From obscure Ancient Greek plays to casting sculptures in bronze the depth and breadth of Andy’s magnificent brains are on full display. Oh, yes, there’s also a smattering of cricket chat. Just a smattering. About an over’s worth. 🏏 Andy is fast becoming a household name for his work on Test Match Special, but he is first and foremost an outstanding comedian with some of the most original, funny and brilliant satirical routines out there. His current one man show is touring theatres across the UK right now. It is called ‘The Zaltgeist’ and you can find out the dates and book the tickets by going to andyzaltzman.co.uk . 🎤 Russell’s doing some gigs in Scandinavia 🫎 and then India, Hong Kong and some even further flung places. If you’re in those places then get tickets and dates by going to russell-howard.co.uk . And there endeth the sermon. Hopefully your souls are all now saved, or at least not quite as filthy as when you walked into this chapel. Now go out there, love thy neighbour and all that shit. 🙏 Amen.
