The above quote is from one of multi-talented poet/rapper/actor Saul Williams' earliest released tracks, but it could just easily serve as a thesis statement for this podcast. This week DBRP hosts Demone Carter, David Ma and Nate LeBlanc are thrilled to present a thought provoking conversation with Williams. We touch on his recorded work, his training, his acting in movies like the recent phenomenon Sinners, and his general artistic outlook. Saul is a deeply reverent hip-hop head who grew up in the genre but is also not afraid to experiment in an attempt to transcend its strictures. On the afternoon before his gig at the Fri-Son we got the opportunity to have a conversation with Saul Williams. It got quite deep very quickly and we touched on subjects such as activism, the state of the States, and of course the themes of his then (2016) current album «Martyr Looser King». The sound quality of the interview is not stellar and you can hear other bands soundchecking in the background, but still a very worthwhile listen for deep thinkers.

I first met ⁠ Saul Williams ⁠ back in 1999, at the very start of my journey as a musician. In one of our earliest correspondences I remember he told me “now, take it to the next level” and taking it to the next level is something Saul has always done. He has been a consistent model of what it looks like to not get stuck by your past work or what people expect of you, always evolving, from actor to poet to musician to producer to filmmaker, and beyond. Saul’s work feels particularly relevant on multiple levels in this moment in human history, as his poem from 20 years ago “ ⁠The Pledge of Resistance (Not In Our Name)⁠ “ is making the rounds on social media once again and feeling as timely as it ever has, and as more and more people are making connections between genocides in the Congo, Sudan and Palestine, Saul’s work with the MartyrLoserKing project and Neptune Frost all feels extremely relevant. Multi-hyphenate, multidisciplinary artist Saul Williams brings his unique dynamism to this Afrofuturist vision, a sci-fi punk musical that’s a visually wondrous amalgamation of themes, ideas, and songs that Williams has explored in his work, notably his 2016 album MartyrLoserKing. Co-directed with the Rwandan-born artist and cinematographer Anisia Uzeyman, the film takes place in the hilltops of Burundi, where a group of escaped coltan miners form an anti-colonialist computer hacker collective. From their camp in an otherworldly e-waste dump, they attempt a takeover of the authoritarian regime exploiting the region's natural resources – and its people. When an intersex runaway and an escaped coltan miner find each other through cosmic forces, their connection sparks glitches within the greater divine circuitry. Set between states of being – past and present, dream and waking life, colonized and free, male and female, memory and prescience – Neptune Frost is an invigorating and empowering direct download to the cerebral cortex and a call to reclaim technology for progressive political ends.
