Director Sam Mendes discusses his new film, Empire of Light, with fellow director Karyn Kusama in a Q&A at the DGA theater in Los Angeles. In the conversation, Mendes speaks about directing (recreating) scenes from his life, making films audiences can connect to, and relaying the cinematic experiences. Set on the South coast of England in the 1980s, the film follows Hilary, a lonely woman who works at a seaside movie palace and is engaged in a boring affair with her married boss, Donald. When Stephen, a young new theater employee arrives on the scene, Hilary senses something kindred in him and they fall into a tenuous romance. Please note: spoilers are included. In part two of Jonathan's conversation with Sam Mendes about his life in theatre, we hear the story of his stewardship of the Donmar Warehouse, the loneliness of the director, what his secret weapon is (according to the late Natasha Richardson), Mike Nicholls and the little man on his shoulder - and the end of that anecdote about Jonathan competing for Sam's favour with Tom Hollander for the part of Cyrano de Bergerac. The titan of theatre that is Sir Sam Mendes joins Jonathan for a waltz through his stellar career and their 35 year friendship. In part one of this enlightening chat, Sam reveals who promised his 9-year-old self to 'see you later, big boy', the unfortunate reason the apples that feature in The Ferryman were forever glistening, why he needs to channel his inner David Essex, and which production of a classic play transformed his creative outlook in the most profound of ways. Jonathan also manages to cock-up the technical side of things at a crucial moment in an anecdote about hoping Sam would give him the leading role in a student production - and how the Legend of Mendes was born in the way he handled it, This - ahem - now appears in part two! Jack is an extraordinary actor whose worked across stage and TV with some of the best people in the business. We discuss his involvement in Sam Mendes' epic global touring production of Shakespeare's Richard III. How he approaches Shakespeare's text, how to find the meaning, and important it is to actors. As Jack says, keep yourself fit with Shakespeare! Also his experience working alongside Sam Mendes, how he conducts the rehearsal room, and how he works with actors to bring his image to life. In addition, we also touch on his involvement in the brilliant 2014 production of The Crucible directed by Yael Farber. Alongside Adrian Schiller who has also been on the show, he talks about Yael's rehearsal process, and the rewards and challenges of playing Danforth. Such a pleasure talking to Jack as I have admired his work in The Crucible since I first saw it, now he's taking a route into directing, it would be great to see what projects he'll be working on in the future. With wins at the Golden Globes and the DGA Awards, Sam Mendes' 1917 is a roaring success. We were thrilled to be able to host a special event for members with Sam, and who better to discuss the film's stunning technical achievement than Oscar-winning master Alfonso Cuarón. Sam spoke to Alfonso about the amount of preparation that was required for such long takes, the continued relevance of the First World War, and why you shouldn’t be sat there wondering where the cuts are. We hope you enjoy the podcast! Music: Loyalty Freak
