Drawing on his unusually broad and deep experience, I had an enjoyable and compact conversation with Rory about navigating conflict, dealing with a changing world order and acting as a true leader within it. Rory is a former British cabinet minister and is known globally today as the co-host of the highly recommended podcast "The Rest Is Politics". He is also Professor in the Practice of Grand Strategy at the Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs. Before that, Rory served as a soldier, diplomat and provincial administrator in Iraq. He also walked across Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal; experiences he later captured in his fascinating books. Please enjoy this short but rich conversation with the diplomat at heart, Rory Stewart, and subscribe to the Sparkr Podcast for more conversations on strategy, innovation and leadership. ...in which we are joined by broadcaster, author, long-distance walker and former MP for Penrith and the Border, Rory Stewart, to discuss his new book, Middleland – Dispatches from the Borders . In a wide-ranging discussion about the 'lost kingdom of Middleland', Dave chats with Rory about long walks through the Lake District and Borderlands, about the joys of post-walk pub stays (warm socks, a book by the fire), and the meditative pace of multi-day rambles. Moving to farming, Rory raises the alarm over a new era of small farm 'clearance', urges caution over rewilding a heritage landscape, and argues that binary thinking is impeding a subsidy regime that would champion nature-based farming. Grappling with a 'Middleland' identity, we consider why the reality of Cumbria – sparsely populated, mountainous, complex – questions so many assumptions at the heart of modern politics, and learn why we should not lose confidence in our National Parks. Facing our quickfire questions, Rory describes his earliest Cumbrian memory (rescue from a snow-blocked A6 aged four), his fondness for Penrith fudge and his love of Striding Edge. Closing on a note of positivity; Rory reflects on the fact that – despite its challenges – Cumbria remains a place in which tens of thousands of people contribute to a place that brings "a type of joy, meaning and happiness that is elusive elsewhere". Rory's new book, Middleland , is out today.
Between 2009 and 2019 Rory Stewart’s regular column for the Cumberland and Westmorland Herald was as varied as it was informative. From Eden to the Middle East, Roman history to super fast broadband (or lack of), his diverse observations and comments were unlike anything politicians normally write. Middleland is not just a compilation of these articles; it’s an insight into all forms of life at a time of major changes in what was Britain’s most rural constituency. He's been talking to Nigel Thompson about some of the highlights from a book that contains articles from his time as MP. Highlights: 1 min 34" How Cumbria has changed and Rory's perspective. 3 mins 22" During his time as MP he walked around his constituency to meet the people he served. Here he talks about what inspired him to do that. 5 mins 30" He reflects on the farming industry and the challenges faced. 9 mins 20" Trying to convert the PM to love Cumbria 12 mins 20" Too many outsiders wearing fleeces telling farmers how to manage their land? 15' 10" Working to connect Cumbria 19'10" Why Middleland has been published now and what he hopes it will achieve. 22' 07" Rory's view on the Cumbrian mayoral role - and is he interested in the job? 25'14" Reflecting on the continuing role of the Cumberland and Westmorland Herald and the importance of local media. Thanks to Rory Stewart for talking to Northern Lights.
Take the survey now: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1iHRZvOly_Q7aprlQBF7n38y0EjgvnHw2OdYII8yQElc/edit?ts=670d0111 Rob is joined by former UK politician Rory Stewart for a discussion on the state of British politics, including government inefficiency and the rise of populism. Rory Stewart gives his take on everything from the UK's economic challenges to Trump's leadership style, drawing from his own experience in government and talks about how we could fix politics in the UK. They also discuss inequality, political communication and the many flaws in democracy and politics right now. Rory Stewart REVEALS: His thoughts on Trump Why many Britons feel uncomfortable and awkward about the UK at the moment The UK isn't in rapid decline but stagnating whilst the US grows faster Why current inequality in Britain stems from the 1980s Thatcher-Reagan era, where privatisation without regulation or monopoly prevention allowed private companies to exploit public utilities Why politicians deliberately lie during elections Our current democratic system is broken How government is exponentially more complex than even large businesses, making it nearly impossible for voters to understand its full complexity. How the most successful disruptors in politics (like Thatcher) succeed BEST MOMENTS "During the second World War, our economy contracted by 45%. We were about half as rich in 1945 as we were in 1939. Where the UK is, is it's been through a phase of kind of 10, 12 years of being pretty stagnant at a moment where the US has been growing fast." "The top three people in the US, Jeff Bezos, Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, their wealth is equivalent to the bottom 50% of the entire American population. They now have more money than 160 million American people. Thank God we haven't reached those levels yet." "I kept saying to them, what are you doing? Right? All of you know, looking at your spending plans that you're gonna have to put up taxes and borrow more money because you've got a 70 billion pound black hole and all of them denied it all the way through the election." "The problem in America and Britain is we never seem to get the balance right and boy has the balance gone wrong with the billionaires, they have created virtual monopolies. Think about Google, it’s got us all over a barrel." "I don't know whether I'd go for Prime Minister again but I'd definitely like to look at doing something for the country. I think there's no job in government, no job in the world, more interesting than government that touches lives more directly." Counting down the last five days until the election results come flooding in, the Conservative Party is still blowing themselves apart from the inside. Why has the Tory campaign been such a clusterfuck and should we care if they implode? Would a Labour supermajority be good or bad for democracy as a whole? To discuss these points, Nish and Coco are joined by Rory Stewart - hearing what he thinks on both the future of the Conservative party, and the future of British democracy. Now known for hosting the “The Rest is Politics” podcast with former Labour spin-doctor Alastair Campbell, Rory explains why he might return to politics - even going for the top job. My guest today is Rory Stewart. Rory Stewart is a British politician, diplomat, and author who served as a member of parliament from 2010 to 2019. He held several governmental positions, notably as a Secretary of State for International Development in 2019, and was known for his extensive work in Afghanistan and Iraq. Rory has authored several books, such as "The Places In Between" , about his solo walk across Afghanistan, and his new book, "Politics on the Edge" , a memoir from within. Rory and I talk about what he learned by walking across Afghanistan. We talk about the war in Afghanistan and what lessons Israel might take from it. We talk about Brexit. We talk about why the Scandinavian model is not appropriate for Britain. We talk about the culture of the world of politics. And finally, we talk about why Rory is so passionate about GiveDirectly , which allows people to give cash directly to the people in the developing world.
