  • What It Means to Be the Other with Paul Hanley

You don’t realise who you are…until you arrive somewhere you have to learn how to belong In Episode 25 of A Stranger, A Suitcase, and A Story, Anton and Ben are joined by Paul Hanley - a story that moves well beyond finance and into something far more human. Born and raised in Johannesburg, Paul built his career in one of South Africa’s most dynamic financial environments before making the decision, like so many others, to start again in Australia. But this is not a simple migration story. It’s a story about resilience — or as Paul calls it, vasbyt — and what it really takes to rebuild when everything familiar falls away. From early lessons shaped in national service, to navigating identity, leadership and belonging in a new country, Paul reflects on the realities of being “the other” — in business, in society, and in yourself. His journey takes us through unlearning deeply held assumptions, confronting new environments, and ultimately building a life and business from the ground up. What stands out is not just the success that followed, but the honesty of the process - the uncertainty, the pressure, and the quiet determination to keep going when nothing is guaranteed. This is a powerful conversation about migration, leadership and the internal shifts that define who we become. 🎧 Listen to Episode 25 at 3spod.com Also available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube. #Belonging #Identity #Migration #LeadershipLessons #HumanStories #Resilience #3SPod

  • 'Adasíyyih: The Story of 'Abdu'l-Baha's Model Farming Community with Paul Hanley

Why would you want to read a book about a farming village? The story of 'Adasíyyih will open your eyes to the society building power within the Bahá'í Faith. 1901, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá purchased land in what is now Jordan that would become the village of ‘Adasíyyih. Through His guidance and unending inspiration, Bahá’í pioneers from Iran would soon settle there and transform a degraded parcel of land—which ‘Abdu’l-Bahá reportedly described as the most inhospitable place on Earth—into the site of a thriving farm and prosperous community whose residents embodied the Bahá’í teachings. The story of ‘Adasíyyih is offered within the context of the extensive agricultural activities of the Central Figures of the Bahá’í Faith and the early Bahá’í communities They nurtured. It was this farming village—along with several others in the region of the Galilee—that produced a surplus of crops, which enabled ‘Abdu’l-Bahá to keep famine at bay for so many people during World War I, a feat that would earn Him a knighthood from the British Empire and a title that He would never use. In time, ‘Adasíyyih would become a model village for Jordanians, and Jordan’s royalty would become frequent guests. This podcast is an interview with Paul Hanley, the author of 'Adasíyyih. Visit BahaiBookStore.com to purchase this book. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

    Music Maps Podcast

Join us to hear about Paul Hanley's time in The Fall from joining the band age 16 & being thrown in at the deep end with a gig at the Electric Ballroom in March of 1980. Paul recorded two legendary singles Totally Wired & How I Wrote Elastic Man at his first recording session later in 1980 & they come out on Rough Trade. The legendary Slates EP comes next followed by the famous trip to Iceland which results in the 'Hip Priest' track which also featured in the Jonathan Demme film The Silence of the Lambs. Karl Burns returns to The Fall & the band proceed with 2 drummers & both appear on the classic Hex Enduction Hour album which follows. Lineup changes continue as Marc Riley departs & Brix Smith comes in & the Perverted by Language album follows in 1983 - we also discuss the myth of Motown Records interest in the Fall - did this happen or not? The Fall move to the Beggar's Banquet label in 1984 & 'The Wonderful & Frightening World of The Fall' album follows later that year - however relationships within the band sour & Paul leaves following an incident in Brighton where the bands gear is stolen.
