Ep 386: Was 2025 a Great or Terrible Year for AI? (w/ Ed Zitron) 2025 was a year that was saturated in AI news, from Deep Seek, through claims of economic “bloodbaths,” to GPT-5, Sora, and Chatbot girlfriends. Frankly, it was exhausting. As we now look back on 2025 an interesting question arises: all in all, did this end up being a good or bad year for AI? To help me answer this question, I’m joined by hard-hitting AI commentator Ed Zitron, who's been everywhere in the media in recent months helping to make sense of the wild claims being thrown in the public’s direction. Together we go through the biggest AI stories of the year to try to make sense of what just happened. Below are the questions covered in today's episode (with their timestamps). Is the tech industry rotting from the inside out? Ed Zitron thinks so. As a PR expert, media critic, and outspoken tech industry commentator, Zitron pulls no punches discussing what he calls the "ROT economy" - where growth at all costs has replaced innovation and customer value. In this brutally honest conversation with Guy Kawasaki, Zitron dissects OpenAI's unsustainable business model, critiques tech billionaires' empty pursuit of wealth at the expense of happiness, and challenges the AI hype cycle. From questioning Blue Origin's all-women space flight to explaining why he refuses clients like Meta and Microsoft, Zitron offers a refreshing counterpoint to Silicon Valley groupthink while advocating for a tech industry that prioritizes workers and customers over shareholder returns. --- Guy Kawasaki is on a mission to make you remarkable. His Remarkable People podcast features interviews with remarkable people such as Jane Goodall, Marc Benioff, Woz, Kristi Yamaguchi, and Bob Cialdini. Every episode will make you more remarkable. Nobody is happy. Ron's work schedule is still interfering with his more important podcast schedule, Charles thinks we have three more years of this shit, Skooks is dealing with literal sewage and the terrorist in the French Quarter and our guest, Ed Zitron, is mad that the Raiders won because it borks their draft position. All that anger is good for the episode, though. You can find the Ed Zitron creative universe, including the Better Offline podcast and Where's Your Ed At, at betteroffline.com. On this week’s episode, Nathan and Chris are joined by writer, podcaster, PR guy, and former games journalist Ed Zitron to talk about, well, a lot of stuff. We begin by talking about “media being destroyed by idiots,” as Ed puts it, before discussing Nvidia’s pivot to AI and how it could crash and burn, taking countless jobs with it. Then we discuss AI NPCs in video games, which Nathan got to try out several different flavors of at GDC. The verdict: They can be fun to mess with, but the novelty wears off quickly, and then what’s the point of them? How does being able to talk to NPCs – something players often try to avoid – forever improve video games? After that we move on to BioShock creator Ken Levine’s long-awaited new game, Judas, which got a big reveal this week. After all that time, it looks… like another BioShock. Somehow, we still find time to then talk about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Dragon’s Dogma 2, as well. Oh, and Nathan finally gets to discuss karaoke on the podcast. Something for everyone! Each week, games journalism veterans Luke Plunkett, Nathan Grayson, Chris Person, Riley MacLeod, and Gita Jackson – though not always all at once, because that’s too many people for a podcast – break down video game news, Remember Some Games, and learn about Chris’ frankly incredible number of special interests. Sometimes we even bring on guests from both inside and outside the video game industry! I don’t know what else to tell you; it’s a great time. What are 10 types of tech that make cars worse? That's what we're discussing with today's guest, Ed Zitron. Ed Zitron is an author, journalist, and podcaster. He is CEO of EZPR, a national tech and business public relations agency. We love his newsletter “Where’s your Ed At?” , which often covers tech, AI, and how both will fail to deliver. On this show we talk about how car marketing is changing; the Fisker financial situation; why Apple's headset sucks while being amazing; why your phone isn't a great key; and more!
