  • Hate, Truth and Denial - with Deborah Lipstadt

Eighteen days to Israeli elections – recent polls show the far right Legislator Itamar Ben Gvir gaining momentum, at the expense of Benjamin Netanyahu and the Likud party. We discuss the possible ramifications of Ben Gvir's ascension inside and outside Israel. And, on a lighter tone – Yonit is giving Jonathan a behind the scenes look at her preparations for the upcoming election night broadcast. Israel and Lebanon are on the verge of signing a maritime border agreement, and now that the political dust has settled - what is actually in the deal, and what does each side set to gain and lose. Our special guest this week is Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt, U.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism. She Joins Yonit and Jonathan for a conversation about ways to counter anti-Semitism - old and new, from the right and from the left, and shares her thoughts about Kanye West's anti-Semitic outburst. A Bintel Brief

  • Deborah Lipstadt - Interview
    Ideas at the House

Before 1996, Deborah Lipstadt was a well-regarded professor of modern Jewish History. That was before the infamous Holocaust denier, David Irving, decided to sue her for libel. Deborah and her publisher took him on, and in a blockbuster trial, that made headlines all around the world, they scored a landmark legal victory, and Deborah became an internationally recognised defender of the truth of the Holocaust. Her most recent book is called Anti-Semitism: Here and Now. And here, she’s speaking with Benjamin Law. • #BattleFest2019: Interrogating anti-Semitism with Deborah Lipstadt and Frank Furedi
    Academy of Ideas

Listen to the debate from the Battle of Ideas Festival 2019. A recent EU report found 89 per cent of Jews living in member countries feel anti-Semitism has increased over the past decade, while 85 per cent believe it to be a serious problem. Anti-Semitism has traditionally been associated with the political right and with national chauvinism, but today it is often radical Islamists or even leftists, rather than nationalists, who are accused of prejudice against Jews. But can alleged anti-Semitism in the British Labour party really be compared to the fascist Oswald Mosley? Is anti-Zionism a distinct and legitimate position? How best can we define anti-Semitism? As Israel descends into political and, some would say, moral crisis, is it possible to criticise Israel without being anti-Semitic? And most importantly, if anti-Semitism is on the rise, how can we best combat it? PROFESSOR FRANK FUREDI sociologist and social commentator; author, How Fear Works: culture of fear in the 21st century and Populism and the European Culture Wars DR DEBORAH E LIPSTADT professor of Holocaust Studies, Emory University, Atlanta; author, Antisemitism: Here and Now; defendant, Irving v Penguin UK and Lipstadt (2000) CHAIR CHAIR: CLAIRE FOX director, Academy of Ideas; Brexit Party MEP; author, I STILL Find That Offensive!

  • The Roots of Anti-Semitism with Deborah Lipstadt

On the final day of Passover this year, a gunman walked into a synagogue outside of San Diego, killing one and injuring three more. Exactly six months earlier, a man entered the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, shouted anti-Semitic slurs and opened fire, killing 11 of those gathered. These acts of violence are part of a marked rise in anti-Semitic hate crimes unfolding across the nation in recent years. Historian Deborah Lipstadt examines these most recent manifestations of anti-Semitism and connects them to their earliest iterations centuries ago. • Beto, Manafort, the College Admissions Scandal, and Understanding Antisemitism (with Deborah Lipstadt)
    Pantsuit Politics

In today's episode, we're joined by Professor Deborah Lipstadt, an expert in Holocaust studies. Professor Lipstadt helps us understand the controversies surrounding the Women's March and Representative Omar, and she advises us on how to thoughtfully discuss and critique America's relationship with Israel. But first, we dive into the week's news. Paul Manafort received 43 additional months in prison from Judge Amy Berman Jackson, and he's been indicted by Manhattan's District Attorney on state charges. After great anticipation, Beto O'Rourke has announced his candidacy for the Democratic Party's nomination. We're a little confused by his splashy Vanity Fair rollout and campaign announcement video. We also talk about Operation Varsity Blues and the state of college admissions, wealth, and parenting in America. Sarah recommended these three episodes of Revisionist History: Carlos Doesn't Remember, Food Fight, and My Little Hundred Million . Thanks again to Professor Lipstadt for joining us in conversation. She is the Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies at Emory University. Her books include The Eichmann Trial , Denial; Holocaust History on Trial (a National Jewish Book Award-winner); Denying the Holocaust: the Growing Assault on Truth and Memory ; and Beyond Belief: the American Press and the Coming of the Holocaust . She lives in Atlanta. Her latest book is Antisemitism: Here and Now . Rachel Weisz portrayed Professor Lipstadt in the 2016 film Denial .
