Chloe explains why she prefers the term "autistic" over "living with autism," diving into the history and power of the language we use to describe ourselves. The conversation gets real about the pressures of the entertainment industry, as Chloe opens up about experiencing cancel culture, dealing with severe rejection sensitivity dysphoria, and the importance of having a trusted "inner circle" to keep her grounded. Chloe also reflects on the massive impact of her character, Quinny, on Heartbreak High , calling for a future where disabled characters are written with lived experience and allowed to be more than just their diagnosis. From stealing stickers at Netflix to the "trampoline" of support provided by her family, this episode is an insightful look at staying resilient while living life out loud. Hello! Today I’m joined by Chloé Hayden. Chloé is an actor, author, and advocate, best known for her role as Quinni in the hit Netflix series Heartbreak High. In 2022, she became Australia’s first openly autistic actress in a leading TV role, helping to redefine on-screen representation of neurodivergent people. In this conversation, we dive into Chloé’s upbringing, from growing up as the eldest of five to having over 50 foster siblings, and why homeschooling ended up being one of the best decisions her parents ever made for her. We talk about her relationship with her husband Dylan, her lifelong love of the Titanic, and how she first found her way into acting. We also get into Heartbreak High , the impact of Quinni as a character, why the role means so much to so many people, and what it was like the moment they called ‘cut’ on set for the very last time. For most of her childhood, Chloé Hayden felt like she didn’t belong. She was bullied at school, moved through ten different schools and struggled to exist in environments that didn’t understand her. When she was diagnosed as autistic at thirteen, there were almost no conversations about neurodivergence and no one she could look to who felt like her. Today, she has become that person for millions of others. Through her role as Quinni in Netflix’s Heartbreak High and her advocacy online, Chloé has become one of the most visible autistic women in the world. But becoming a voice for others comes with its own cost. In this conversation with Kate Langbroek, Chloé opens up about the pressure of representation, the emotional toll of advocacy and what it means to build a life that belongs to her, not just the movement she helped create. What does it feel like to grow up knowing you don’t quite fit the system around you? In this powerful episode of You’re Gonna Want To Hear This, actors and advocates Georgie Stone and Chloe Hayden sit down for an honest conversation about identity, difference and the long journey to understanding yourself. Both women know what it’s like to move through the world feeling “other.” For Stone, that meant knowing she was a girl from a very young age, long before she had the language to describe being transgender. For Hayden, it meant growing up autistic in a world that often misunderstood - or outright misrepresented - neurodivergent people. Together, they unpack what it means to finally find the words that explain your experience, the labels that hurt and the ones that can help you understand yourself. They talk about school, bullying, media representation, and how seeing characters who look like you - or think like you - can change the trajectory of a young person’s life. The conversation also explores the power and pressure of representation. Stone made history as the first transgender actor to play a trans character in an Australian drama when she joined Neighbours, while Hayden’s portrayal of Quinny in Heartbreak High has become a lifeline for autistic viewers around the world. Warm, funny and deeply thoughtful, this episode is about the courage it takes to be visible - and the radical power of simply existing as yourself. In this episode: Georgie Stone on knowing she was a girl from the age of two Chloe Hayden on growing up autistic and finally receiving a diagnosis Why labels can be empowering rather than limiting The impact of growing up without representation in media The characters that helped shape their identities (hello, Disney) Playing groundbreaking roles in Neighbours and Heartbreak High The pressure of representing entire communities Why simply existing proudly can be an act of protest The message they wish every young person could hear Listen to the full episode of You’re Gonna Want To Hear This wherever you get your podcasts. We're putting the 'heartbreak' in Heartbreak High! On this special episode of Date With Tait, Tait McGregor dates three of the cast members of Heartbreak High to find out who will be the love of her life. Will it be Ayesha Madon, Chloé Hayden or James Majoos? Hearts will be broken. Heartbreak High is an Australian teen drama that follows a group of students at Hartley High whose lives unravel after a secret hookup map exposing their relationships is discovered by the school. The show blends messy friendships, sexuality, identity, and social politics with dark humour and emotional storylines as the students deal with the fallout. It became popular for its diverse and chaotic characters, sharp writing, and its modern reimagining of the cult-favorite 1990s Australian series of the same name. Season 3 of Heartbreak High is out on Netflix on March 25th! A special thank you to Hollywood Hotel for hosting our date.
