“The reality is that you will grieve forever. You will not ‘get over’ the loss of a loved one; you will learn to live with it. You will heal and you will rebuild yourself around the loss you have suffered. You will be whole again but you will never be the same. Nor should you be the same nor would you want to.” ~ Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and David Kessler Losing my daughter Cristina six years ago had and still has a profound effect on me. I am finally coming to grips with the fact that I know I will never be the same. However and thankfully, I know she is watching over me now and for that I am very grateful. I am also extremely grateful to my friend Bruce who has been a loving, compassionate support over these years and I have wanted to do this interview with him since I began these podcasts. His friendship and book have been a great source of healing and comfort. His poetry speaks to the heart and soul for those of us who have lost loved ones. And who hasn't lost a loved one sometime in their life? His words and heart help bring us together in community to share our grief, pain and the many difficult and unexpected emotions that can arise when we lose someone we love. In reality, grief isn't something you "get over," it's learning to live in a whole new way. On many levels, grief can be transformative as we integrate it, and recognize that is now a part of who we are. Losing someone, especially unexpectedly, makes us much more aware of how important the people in our lives are and has the potential to bring us closer together. Life is short and all we really have is each other. Loss underlines that reality in a way that’s just as beautiful as it is sad. For anyone who has lost a loved one, whether it was yesterday, ten years ago or knows someone who is grieving, I highly recommend reading Bruce's beautiful poetry book. Hello everyone If my voice is more reverberant than usual its because this is beaming from our new studio, which currently has no furniture, no electricity and no internet! We are hoping eventually to establish one or two of those things, and maybe even host some of these conversations live once we are all allowed to occupy space together again. In the near term, the good news is we have a new episode for you! Last night we recorded a long and fun conversation with the Hugo award winning author and futurist Bruce Sterling. As you will hear Bruce has a great deal of knowledge about a great deal of stuff, and as well as his early writing helping to establish the cyberpunk movement, he was also among a handful of people who set the countercultural tone in San Francisco at the dawn of WIRED and the dot com boom. He is also a curator and expert on digital art. We discuss his being the first WIRED cover story, new information he uncovered on the relationship between Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace, the first science fiction writer; a woman referred to as “mad Madge”, Qanon as Christian fundamentalist Scifi, Amazons beginnings as a sci-fi bookstore, ideas from early dot com times that people didn’t pick up but maybe should have done more with, and to close we have a fiery debate about the merits and pitfalls of the name of this podcast and a conversation with GPT-3. Bruce is a treat to talk to and a fountain of wild knowledge, we hope its fun to listen to. Have a great week.

Welcome to another quarant-week How Do You Like it So Far? team! We are still super lucky to be able to stay safe with our friends and loved ones right now and hope you are all hanging in there. We know it is a tough time and we appreciate you making this podcast a part of your quarantin-ing. Basically, thank you for not socially-distancing yourselves from this podcast. We are continuing our sequence on science fiction during the COVID-19 crisis. This week, Colin and Henry welcome Bruce Sterling, author, futurist, and one of the founders of Cyberpunk movement along with his partner Jasmina Tešanović, Serbian activist, author, feminist, and filmmaker. Sterling and Tešanović offer their perspective on what is going on in Belgrade, Serbia (where they are currently under a rigid lockdown) that perhaps can shed light on the pandemic. Sterling brings (slightly terrifying) insight on speculative world-building in response to our current reality. Sterling, well known for developing the concept of “design fiction,” discusses how companies and political organizations engage with world-building to anticipate problems and social change. Sterling dives deep into the potential policy changes that may happen, such as the rise of surveillance and technology companies becoming the new power brokers. He describes how the current world order emerged post-9/11 as policy decisions reacted to perceived and anticipated threats and suggests that the pandemic is apt to bring new shifts in power. Sterling provocatively suggests that when the pandemic ends, we may be living with its consequences but we will forget, as other generations have, the health threat itself. Sterling discusses the role of Chinese soft power, specifically in the Balkan region, and suggests that China is gaining global influence even as the American Belle Epoque is ending. Most surprisingly, Sterling dismantles the Cyberpunk ethos he helped create (mind blown right?) as science fiction writers are playing a different role in response to the changed environment in which they are working. A silver lining Sterling does provide is an enthusiasm over Twitter (who would have thought?)! Listen in as Sterling discusses a progression of pulp writers to contemporary ones like Cory Doctorow! The list of those writers will be in the notes section, if you’re looking to expand your pandemic reading list. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Share your thoughts via Twitter with Henry, Colin and the How Do You Like It So Far? account! I.e., it’s about Bruce and me. This is one of the stories that appears in our 2016 anthology, Rucker + Sterling, Transreal Cyberpunk. Subscribe to Rudy Rucker Podcasts.
