On this week’s Talkhouse Podcast we’ve got two old friends who’ve worked together on such culture-crushing songs as “Dick in a Box”—one of whom is known more for the music, and the other for the funny. It’s Andy Samberg and Asa Taccone. Samberg you surely know for his years on Saturday Night Live and Brooklyn Nine-Nine and tons of big movies. Before all that he was part of the trio The Lonely Island, which blew up on SNL with “Dick in a Box,” among other hilarious jams. The Lonely Island also features Jorma Taccone, and when Samberg and Taccone needed some musical help for their SNL shorts, they would often call Jorma’s brother Asa, who helped them shape “Dick in a Box,” “Motherlover” and plenty of other songs. But Asa’s less inclined toward the funny stuff that his childhood friends are known for; he’s been making his own decidedly less silly music since 2011 in collaboration with Matthew “Cornbread” Compton under the name Electric Guest. The duo just released their first album since 2019, and it’s called 10K — you’ll hear the meaning behind the name in this chat. As you’ll hear, there’s no jokey rap to be found, just a compelling mix of soulful pop: You might not be surprised to learn that in recent years Taccone has also collaborated with the likes of The Weeknd and Carly Rae Jepsen. Check out “Play Your Guitar” from 10K right here . As you’ll hear, Samberg and Taccone are pretty comfortable with each other, because their friendship goes way back. They talk about Samberg’s decision to take a swing at the big time, Lonely Island deep cuts, and the alternate name that Electric Guest briefly considered. Enjoy. Our Ali resists flat-out asking Andy Samberg to be his 'new best friend' during this Story So Far interview in honour of his new time-loopy romantic comedy-drama Palm Springs, now - at long last! - available on Amazon Prime Video in the UK, nearly a year after those lucky Americans got to see it first in 2020. Expect nerdy SNL chat, nerdy Hot Rod chat, nerdy Popstar chat, nerdy Palm Springs chat and just a whole lot of general nerdy chat to be honest.
On this episode of The Screenplayed Breakdown, we speak with actor and comedian, Andy Samberg, and writer, Andy Siara, about their film, 'Palm Springs'. Samberg and Siara talk about the benefits of shooting a film on a low budget and the importance of not selling out the tone of the film or its characters.
The Ringer’s Bill Simmons is joined by actor, comedian, and writer Andy Samberg to talk about his new movie ‘Palm Springs’ on Hulu, his time on ‘SNL,’ and the role YouTube played in The Lonely Island’s success. Later they talk about scary movies, Andy’s Bay Area sports allegiance, video games, and quarantine (3:02). Then Bill is joined by journalist James Andrew Miller to talk about the sixth chapter in his podcast ‘Origins: Almost Famous Turns Twenty,’ including behind-the-scenes stories, casting what-ifs, interviews with the cast, the movie's cultural impact, and more. Finally, they discuss the current state of sports media and what the future holds (62:13).Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Take some time this week to remember your original happy hour: Saturday mornings as a kid, waking up at dawn, jumping on the couch with a bowl of chocolate cereal, turning on the ‘toons, tuning out the outside world and working your way into a sugar hangover before noon. This week, we look back to SDCC19 in order to look forward to the new 7th season of Brooklyn 99 with our exclusive round table interviews with series stars Andy Samberg (SNL, Hot Rod, That’s My Boy), Melissa Fumero (Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K., One Life to Live), Terry Crews (Idiocracy, The Expendables, That One Old Spice Guy), Joe Lo Truglio (Wet Hot American Summer, Superbad, The State), writer Luke Del Tredici (30 Rock) and series creator Dan Goor (Parks and Recreation). From Fox to NBC but still making the case for sitcom greatness, Brooklyn 99 takes the adolescent ambitions of Generation X, watching cop movies, playing with action figures, idolizing badasses, etc so forth, and strikes comedy gold with its hijinks, heroics, tenderness, and inclusiveness all without the maudlin weight of sitcom over-thinking. It’s woke with eyes closed, easy to binge out of order, and a full-on love letter from old Saturday morning cartoons to contemporary primetime network TV. It's right in the sweet spot between McClane and Gruber, between The Office and The Shield, between six seasons and a movie. It is, in short, the themes of Saturday Morning TV that just barely grew up with us. So join us as we kick off our brand new season with a packed studio. We give you, at no small scheduling cost, all four SMC barrels: Grim Shea, Marke., Jimmy the Gent, AND the surprise return of fan favorite renegade detective, Johnny Heck! Noice! 🥣Saturday Morning Cereal — the show that celebrates the themes of Saturday Morning TV that we not only grew up with, but that grew up with us. We talk with the talent and creatives who continue to shape the pop culture we love. 🎙️ Subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and visit mattypradio.com for more episodes, interviews, and Comic-Con and pop-culture coverage.
