Do you ever feel like your talent , time , or resources aren’t being used in ways that really matter? If so, you’re not alone – research suggests a quarter of the modern workforce feels their jobs are socially meaningless. That same restlessness is what led me, your host Olivia Hicks, to make a major career shift and join the School for Moral Ambition. To launch Series Two, today’s guest is the person at the heart of that movement: Rutger Bregman . George Monbiot has called him “one of the greatest thinkers of the twenty-first century,” and Trevor Noah describes his latest book, Moral Ambition , as “a stark wake-up call.” In this conversation, we unpack moral ambition , where it fits into meaning , and practical steps anyone can take to do more good – whatever their skills, resources, or starting point. It’s a thoughtful, energising discussion that might just shift how you think about work, impact, and what really matters – with practical steps you can take today. Note : This episode discusses gender stereotypes and toxic masculinity. While some binary language appears, it isn’t intended to exclude and we support and welcome people of all genders identities, including trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse listeners. The overarching definition of success today often looks like the accumulation of stuff – money, cars, property, clothing – anything that signals wealth. This means that success is also synonymous with overshoot, extraction, and consumption – none of which lead to healthy outcomes for the planet or the global good. But what might be possible if we were to redefine success to prioritize collective well-being instead of personal gain? In today's episode, Nate sits down with Dutch historian and author Rutger Bregman to discuss the concept of moral ambition, which he defines as the desire to be one of the best, measured by different standards of success: not by big payouts or fancy honorifics, but by the ability to tackle the world's biggest problems. Bregman highlights the importance of entrepreneurs in driving social change and the necessity of cultural shifts to foster a more altruistic society, as well as the challenges faced in pursuing these ideals. What possibilities might arise if we combined the idealism of an activist with the ambition of an entrepreneur? How can we apply the principles of entrepreneurship to better address global challenges? And how could a radical redefinition of success motivate the world's top talent to make major contributions to our most pressing issues, leaving a legacy that actually makes a difference? (Conversation recorded on July 8th, 2025) About Rutger Bregman: Rutger Bregman is a Dutch historian and author. 1 What's Humankind In "Humankind: A Hopeful History," Rutger Bregman explores the optimistic view of human nature, arguing that people are inherently good and cooperative rather than selfish and violent, as often portrayed in traditional narratives. Bregman supports his thesis with historical examples and research, suggesting that societal structures often foster distrust and competition. He emphasizes the potential for compassion and altruism in human behavior, advocating for a reimagining of social institutions to promote kindness and community, thereby challenging the pessimistic assumptions that dominate contemporary thinking. 2 Key Concepts of Humankind In Chapter 1 of "Humankind" by Rutger Bregman, the theme revolves around the inherent goodness of human nature. This theme is further explored in subsequent chapters, particularly Chapter 2, where Bregman discusses the historical context of human cooperation and empathy, showcasing examples that illustrate human kindness and altruism. Additionally, Chapter 4 continues this discourse by examining social experiments that highlight how people tend to choose collaboration over competition in challenging situations. Collectively, these chapters reinforce the core idea that humans are fundamentally inclined towards goodness, countering the more pessimistic views of human behavior. 3 In-Depth Chapter Analysis of Humankind by Rutger Bregman In Humankind, Rutger Bregman explores the inherent goodness of humanity across various chapters, with each serving to dismantle common misconceptions about human nature. In the first few chapters, particularly "The History of Human Nature," Bregman challenges the long-standing belief, popularized by figures like Hobbes, that humans are fundamentally selfish and competitive. He supports his argument by referencing research in fields like anthropology and psychology, highlighting examples such as the cooperative behavior observed in hunter-gatherer societies, which emphasizes that our survival is rooted in community and collaboration rather than individualism. As the book progresses into later chapters, such as "The Kindness of Strangers," Bregman delves into modern situations that reinforce his argument, discussing how events like the 2011 London Riots paradoxically led to a surge in communal support and empathy among citizens. By aggregating historical incidents, psychological studies, and personal testimonies, he strengthens his thesis that, under duress, people instinctively tend to help one another, demonstrating a profound capacity for altruism. This cumulative evidence across chapters supports the overarching theme that humanity is, at its core, compassionate and cooperative, challenging readers to reconsider their assumptions about human behavior. 1.Listen Humankind Audiobook summary at Bookey https://www.bookey.app/audiobook/humankind 2.Buy Humankind at Amazon https://www.amazon.com/s?k=humankind 3.Buy Humankind at Kobo https://www.kobo.com/us/en/search?query=Humankind&fclanguages=en 4.Search Humankind at worldcat https://search.worldcat.org/en/search?q=Humankind&offset=1
1 What's Humankind In "Humankind: A Hopeful History," Rutger Bregman challenges conventional views of human nature, asserting that people are fundamentally good and cooperative rather than selfish and competitive. Through engaging storytelling and historical examples, he argues that societal events often reveal the best of humanity, emphasizing the capacity for kindness, altruism, and collaboration in the face of adversity. Bregman advocates for a more optimistic outlook on human potential, suggesting that by fostering trust and community, societies can move towards a more equitable and compassionate existence. 2 Key Concepts of Humankind In Chapter 1 of "Humankind," Rutger Bregman introduces the theme of inherent human goodness and the optimistic view of humanity’s nature, which challenges the traditional belief in inherent selfishness. This theme recurs throughout the book, especially in Chapter 3, where Bregman discusses the "realistic" view of humans and the importance of cooperation and altruism in society. Additionally, Chapter 6 further supports this theme by examining historical events that showcase human kindness and resilience in the face of adversity, reinforcing the belief that people are fundamentally good and capable of collaboration. 3 In-Depth Chapter Analysis of Humankind by Rutger Bregman In Humankind: A Hopeful History, Rutger Bregman divides the book into chapters that collectively challenge the long-standing narrative of humanity's innate selfishness. One pivotal chapter, "The History of Human Nature," critiques the belief that humans are essentially greedy and violent. Bregman utilizes historical examples, such as the kindness exhibited by soldiers in World War II who refrained from killing, to argue that cooperation and altruism are deeply rooted in our species. The chapter highlights the connection between human nature and societal structures, emphasizing that people are often led to display their best selves when provided with the right circumstances, thereby reinforcing a theme of inherent human goodness. Another significant chapter, "The Dutch and the Second World War,” delves into the remarkable resilience and compassion displayed by the Dutch during the Nazi occupation. Bregman recounts how the general population, rather than succumb to collaboration, engaged in acts of defiance by hiding Jews and assisting resistance fighters. This narrative not only contrasts with the typical depiction of wartime behavior but also underscores Bregman's central theme: that empathy and solidarity prevail even in the darkest of times. Through these chapters, Bregman effectively weaves a narrative that encourages a more hopeful perspective on humanity, backed by evidence from history that counters narratives of doom and gloom. 1.Listen Humankind Audiobook summary at Bookey 2.Buy Humankind at Amazon 3.Buy Humankind at Kobo 4.Search Humankind at worldcat
