The third stop on our “Lost in Belfast” series is the city’s oldest cultural organization, The Linen Hall Library, located in an 18th-century building across the street from City Hall and a reminder of Belfast’s days as “Linenopolis” when it dominated the global linen trade. Our conversation with director Julie Andrews delves into the library's rich history since its establishment in 1788, its role as a neutral space for political and cultural dialogue, and its extensive collections, including its signature Northern Ireland Political Collection of ephemera and artifacts gathered during The Troubles. “Politically, we show no allegiance. There’s something in our collection to offend everyone,” Julie says. She shares insights into the library's innovative projects, ongoing initiatives to ensure the organization stays relevant, challenges inherent in operating a not-for-profit institution, the library's community engagement, its diverse events, and potential future expansions. Slam the Gavel welcomes back Julie Andrews to the podcast. Julie was last on Season 5, Episode 134 in July 12th, 2024, where we talked about knowing the signs of alienation before it's too late. Today we talked about why and how judges, Guardian ad Litems and other third party parasites aren't held accountable. If law enforcement, physicians and nurses have to be drug tested, then shouldn't judges? Julie talked about her experience with Judge David Paris in the Family Court Arena and his bias toward her. She also talked about GAL, Attorney Jessica Braun who never interviewed her and even medically diagnosed Julie. However, the GAL doesn't have a medical license, nor practices in medicine. The foster parents involved were never given background checks and routinely used her daughter to baby-sit other kids in the house so the foster parents could take lavish vacations on the Title IV-E funding. "There has to be accountability and consequences for their actions," Julie stated. Julie belongs to a non-profit organization: Advocates For the Falsely Accused. Slam the Gavel welcomes Julie Andrews to the podcast. Julie is a 59 year old Mother of five adult children who have all been alienated from her. Although her ex-husband and she both grew up in California, he had joined the Navy and they spent most of their 20 year marriage on the east coast. Julie is a survivor of domestic abuse. Her ex choked her at the age of 31, while pregnant. Julie started having seizures as a result. Her three oldest children grew up not only living in fear of their own father but they were also taught that their Mother was not worth loving. This made it easy for him to alienate them as their two youngest daughters were ages five and eight when he picked up and moved 3,000 miles away from them and moved in with his mother. The children saw a counselor regularly who wrote letters stating that the daughters would come home from their summer visits with their father emotionally traumatized and that everyone in California hated their Mother. They were also told to tell the police that their Mother was, "a mean mommy." This went on their entire childhood until her next youngest graduated high school. Her father gave her a one way ticket, changed her phone number and all of her graduation gifts returned. However, she didn't want to go with him and when her Mother asked why, she told her, "I'm afraid if I don't agree with them, they will make everyone hate me the same way they make everyone hate you." Courntey and Emily wrap up the Legendary Summer Series with Dame Julie Andrews' second memoir "Home Work: A Memoir of My Hollywood Years." Andrews' memoir takes place from 1962-1986 starting with her Hollywood debut in Disney's "Mary Poppins" and ending with her second husband's semi autobiographical film, "That's Life!" Andrews reflects on the work and self discovery it took to balance a new career on the silver screen and a home life which included divorce, a second marriage, two step children, two adopted children, therapy, multiple family emergencies, and living around the world. In between hardships, Andrews also humbly shares all of the amazing opportunities and memories she has making movies and learning how to use and harness her talents. Courtney and Emily conclude the episode again talking about the criteria to become a Disney Legend and discuss how Julie Andrews managed to achieve it with just one film.
