Follow Joe Donnelly— it's freeIn this episode, Heidi and Joel recall the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol with former Senator Joe Donnelly. They reflect on the events of that day, the role of law enforcement, and the political accountability that followed. The conversation also touches on the importance of civic engagement and the future of democracy in America, emphasizing the need for vigilance against threats to democratic norms. Takeaways: The insurrection on January 6th was a heartbreaking event for many, including those who served in the Senate. Law enforcement officers displayed heroism during the Capitol attack, risking their lives to protect others. Political accountability is crucial in the aftermath of the insurrection, with a need for leaders to uphold democratic values. Civic engagement is essential for the future of democracy; citizens must be involved in the political process. The events of January 6th were not spontaneous; they were planned and orchestrated by individuals with intent to harm. The failure of Congress to hold accountable those responsible for the insurrection is a significant concern. The role of state legislatures is vital in ensuring fair elections and protecting democracy. The insurrectionists' actions were not representative of the American people, but rather a radical faction. The need for a plaque honoring the heroism of Capitol police officers remains unaddressed, reflecting ongoing political challenges. The conversation highlights the importance of educating future generations about democracy and civic responsibility. Welcome back to another thought-provoking episode of The Hot Dish, where we dive deep into the heart of America’s rural and small-town landscapes. In this very special episode, Joel speaks with two incredibly insightful guests who will illuminate the intertwining of religion and politics in the upcoming election. Joe Donnelly, former Congressman, Senator, and Ambassador to the Holy See, passionately calls for character and equitable values in candidates, urging the religious community to consider these traits closely. Robert P. Jones, the President of the Public Religion Research Institute, discusses how Kamala Harris's diverse background is more accepted by younger Americans while illustrating how the push for Christianity in public schools, like the Ten Commandments case in North Dakota, ties into the broader Christian nationalist movement. Listeners will discover how American Catholics' views on abortion, governance, and religious affiliation are evolving, highlighting a growing acceptance of diversity within religious communities. We also delve into the pivotal role women play in political organization, particularly within African American communities, and the significant demographic shifts shaping the religious landscape in Middle America. Joe Donnelly’s reflections on the humor and diversity in religious practices and Robert P. Jones’s dissection of Christian nationalism’s rise provide valuable insights into the underlying currents influencing today’s political climate. Heidi will be back on November 6 and stay tuned for a special post-election episode that week as well. Don't forget to let us know your thoughts at podcast@onecountryproject.org.

That is a view shared by not only ourselves here at GYH, but especially by this week’s guest, Joe Donnelly, CEO of T.A.M.H.I (Tackling Awareness of Mental Health Issues). Joe Donnelly is a journalist and author, who works for the Celtic View magazine. He swapped a career in plumbing for journalism, with a round-the-world trip in between the two, and after writing for PC Gamer about one of his passions – video games – he joined Celtic in 2018, writing about his other passion – football and, in particular, Celtic. In 2019, he published his first book, Homegrown Hero, the biography of Celtic player, James Forrest, to great success and, like the proverbial buses, you wait years for a Joe Donnelly book and two come along almost at the same time.
