Follow Jamie Oliver— it's freeNearly 30 years ago, Jamie Oliver hit British TV screens with The Naked Chef, beginning a career arc that has seen him become a bestselling author and social campaigner. He started helping out in his parents' pub aged just eight, and struggled at school, but after making the move into cookery he flourished, first in top kitchens and then behind the camera. Cultural ubiquity and campaigning documentaries followed, though his business fortunes took a significant hit after his Jamie's Italian chain collapsed in 2019. Seven years later, he's betting that he's learnt from his mistakes, as he relaunchs the chain. At the same time his campaigning over school food standards has started to bear fruit again.

For sixteen years, Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver—two of Britain's most beloved chefs, both fathers, both wildly successful—spent an extraordinary amount of energy tearing each other apart in public. Ramsay called Oliver fat, untalented, a "one-pot wonder." Oliver fired back about cookbook sales and deep jealousy. It was petty, it was tiresome, and it was great for business. Then in 2017, Jamie Oliver said something that crossed a line neither man knew existed. Trying to de-escalate their feud, he mentioned that they were both fathers—Gordon had four kids, Jamie had five—and maybe they should stop "slagging off some kids' dad on telly."There was just one problem: Jamie didn't know that months earlier, Gordon and his wife Tana had lost their fifth child in a devastating miscarriage. The comment, meant to bring perspective, instead became the most painful moment in their entire rivalry. This Thanksgiving, we're exploring how two grown men needed their wives and children to finally tell them what should have been obvious all along: some things matter more than winning. It's a story about pride, grief, reconciliation, and what happens when you forget the person you're insulting has a family watching. Join the Feuds Community! Love drama? Skynews reported that Jamie is calling in the administrators because the chain failed to stay afloat. Last year, the Mirror reported that the restaurant empire owed staff £2.2 million and was in £71.5 million of debt. Oliver blamed Brexit on the closure of six of his Jamie’s Italian branches. He said poor trading conditions, rising food and staffing costs, and a weakening pound. Restaurant consultant mentioned that Jamie’s demise can also be attributable to consumers abandoning the ‘middle market’ having realized they can get better quality food from (say) their local Italian or burger joint at the same price or less. This week we are discussing Jamie Oliver's Channel four documentary Jamie's Dyslexia Revolution. We found this programme hugely impactful and we felt compelled to discuss the critical issues it raises about dyslexia, the shortcomings of our education system and how it affects neurodivergent children. Key Takeaways Dyslexia as a Brain Difference : Understanding that dyslexia is a brain difference rather than a lack of intelligence can be transformative. It shifts the narrative from feeling inadequate to recognising unique cognitive strengths and learning styles. Impact of Early Screening : Early screening in schools can significantly change the trajectory for neurodivergent children. Identifying dyslexia early allows for tailored support, helping children feel understood and empowered rather than left behind. Need for Teacher Training : The lack of adequate training for teachers on neurodivergence can hinder a child's educational experience. Proper training equips educators with the tools to recognise and support diverse learning needs, fostering a more inclusive classroom environment. Importance of Advocacy : Advocacy plays a crucial role in driving change within the education system. By voicing concerns and pushing for better resources and support, parents can help create a more equitable environment for all children. Empowering Children : Empowering children and celebrating their strengths is vital for their self-esteem. When children feel valued for who they are, they are more likely to thrive and develop a positive self-image. Jamie's Dyslexia Revolution Watch and share the documentary here Let’s get the word out. Our friend Jamie Oliver returns to the show, and we could not be happier to talk with him about so many things. He’s currently appearing on Netflix as part of the Chef’s Table: Legends series. In addition to the Netflix show, he will be launching his 10 Cooking Skills for Life platform in the United States, a free curriculum available for schools and organizations that is designed to teach young children all the skills they need to cook. For those who didn’t grow up watching food TV, here’s the deal. Jamie pioneered a form of food television that brought cameras into the home in a way not previously seen. When The Naked Chef debuted on BBC Two in the UK and the Food Network in the United States in 1999, home cooking on TV was a stand-and-stir affair. Here, a young and floppy Oliver was cooking real food from a cool East London flat, talking viewers through the relative simplicity of making dinner. Oliver has gone on to write numerous cookbooks (selling 50 million in the UK alone) and create food television that expanded beyond cooking, producing documentaries about the sugar industry and school lunches that transitioned his work from dude food evangelist to heartier activism. We really enjoyed this talk with Jamie Oliver. Also on the show, we have a great conversation with Jake Cohen . Jake’s a talented cookbook author and most certainly in the modern social media mix. We talk about Jake’s really cool new cookbook club with Allstora , and the May selection: Ottolenghi Comfort by Yotam Ottolenghi.
