Every day they watch scientists and politicians testify, rooting for their favourite characters. The inquiry’s main target is President Jair Bolsonaro, whose disastrous handling of the pandemic resulted in nearly 500,000 deaths. Yesterday’s guest star was one of the most dramatic yet. Wilson Witzel, impeached governor of Rio de Janeiro and an ally-turned-opponent of Mr Bolsonaro, said the president left the states “to the mercy of the disgrace that was coming”. He also endorsed claims that the government’s plan of action was herd immunity. Other deponents had already complained about the use of hydroxychloroquine, an ineffective medicine against covid-19. The investigation is unlikely to result in impeachment, but support for Mr Bolsonaro has dropped to below 30%, according to recent polls. He said he expects a short-term rise in inflation, but not sharp enough to increase interest rates. Mr Powell insisted that the Fed will keep rates near zero until America reaches “maximum employment” and inflation averages 2% over time. The levies were imposed as part of a longstanding tit-for-tat trade war between the European Union and America over subsidies for Airbus and Boeing, two planemakers. The mayor’s announcement came after Brazil suffered on Wednesday its worst day of covid-19 deaths since the pandemic began, with a record 1,910 fatalities. Scientists urged the government to declare a 14-day lockdown.
