As part of a special symposium on the past and present of Christian democracy held on September 24, 2021, just ahead of this year’s German elections, the Review of Democracy has interviewed Kati Marton about her forthcoming book The Chancellor. The Remarkable Odyssey of Angela Merkel (Simon & Schuster, 2021). This new book, which will appear in fifteen languages in the near future, draws on years of research and direct access to key individuals to paint a human portrait of the first female chancellor of the Federal Republic . The conversation conducted by Ferenc Laczó focuses on Kati Marton’s motivation to paint a human portrait of Angela Merkel who has been known to be rather fiercely protective about her privacy; on Merkel’s personality traits and how they have impacted the style and substance of her political leadership; the tensions between Merkel’s commitment to liberal and democratic values and the demands of Realpolitik that have defined her sixteen years in office; die Kanzlerin ’s signature achievements, notable failures and her legacy; and how her time in charge of Germany has transformed our image of a competent and effective political leader, not least in gender terms.

Elections for the Bundestag, the country’s lower house, will be held on September 26th. The outcome will determine the next coalition to govern Germany, and its leader. The Economist has built an election forecast model to try and read the tea leaves. It combines polling data with an analysis of how voter intention in previous elections, as told to pollsters, compares with what actually transpired in ballot boxes. At the time of launch, Mrs Merkel’s party, the Christian Democrats, and its sister party, the Christian Social Union, are set to win between 23% and 38% of the seats. As Europe’s largest economy and a crucial player in the EU, Germany’s elections will affect not only its citizens but the entire world. Mrs Merkel’s centre-right Christian Democratic Union and its sister party in Bavaria, the Christian Social Union, must choose a joint candidate to lead them into September’s general election. The leaders of both parties want the job, and yesterday each won the backing of their respective parties’ executive committees. Armin Laschet, the CDU’s chair, has the stronger claim as leader of the larger party. But Markus Söder, his CSU counterpart, is a better communicator and far outshines his rival in national polls. Despite promising to seek the job only if the CDU asked, Mr Söder is refusing to stand down, instead urging a broader discussion between the parties. The CDU/CSU has lately tumbled in opinion polls as Germany has struggled with a third wave of covid-19.
