  • The Three Rules of Workplace Communication with Gary Ross

Silence, vague direction, and “motivational” messages that don’t move anyone can quietly wreck a team’s performance. We sit down with leadership communication trainer and consultant Gary Ross to get brutally practical about what actually works when you need people to understand you and act. Gary argues that communication isn’t a soft skill at all, it’s a business skill, and organizations that treat it that way build more trust, execute faster, and outperform the ones that don’t. We dig into Gary’s three “number one” rules: know your audience, tell them a story, and remember that everything communicates. You’ll hear a memorable CFO story that shows what happens when you lead with your title instead of curiosity, plus an easy Think Feel Do checklist that helps you create clarity in hallway conversations, staff meetings, and executive presentations. We also unpack storytelling as a workplace tool using a simple four-question structure that turns dry updates into a narrative people can follow, especially during change, transformation, or uncertainty. Then we get tactical about modern communication problems: email tone, long messages nobody reads, and why the channel you choose matters as much as the words you type. Finally, Gary shares how these principles helped a plant manager eliminate a two-day production delay by informing, motivating, and directing the team more clearly, proof that better communication produces measurable results. If you want to connect with Gary, find him at insidecoms.com. Subscribe, share this with a colleague who “writes novels in email,” and leave a review so more leaders can build communication that gets work done. Today’s Top 3 Takeaways: Everything Communicates Storytelling For Success Communicate For Growth Today’s Guest & Resource Links: www.insidecomms.com https://plus.insidecomms.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/garymross/ Watch us on YouTube: https://youtu.be/FIYpTfRkZF8 Timestamped Show Notes: 08:50 – I have three number one rules of communication, and they're all tied for number one. That's why they're all number one. One of them is, Everything Communicates and that's one of the things that communicates. I'll tell you kind of the converse of the story... 19:00 – Well, so we need to be strategic absolutely about communication, because, you know, how many times have you been there whether you're in communications or not. You're at work and somebody comes to you and says, oh, you know, we need to send out an email about XYZ. People's minds, especially when it goes to communication, a lot of times just go to the tactic, we need an email, we need a meeting, we need a town hall, we need a video. 23:25 - Tell them a story! That's my third number one rule of communication, is to tell them a story. Why is that? Go back to caveman drawings. That's just the natural way for humans to communicate and to relate to one another and to move one another, to action. Frankly, it's not that tough, because there's a very simple structure. 29:20 – Regarding the e-Learning we've got, it's all about the video success. So you got the visual and the audio, but then we also have little exercises that reinforce a lot of the points that we talked about in the videos. Then we also added in each of the courses, we have these downloadable tools and templates that you can take and keep. If you want you want to go old school, you print it out and you stick it up next to your desk and you can consult it regularly. One of the things I've got is on the corporate narrative course in there, but it is the storytelling template that I that I had just talked about earlier.

  • Building Your Communication Skills with Gary Ross

Stephen Morris welcomed Gary Ross, an Emmy-nominated journalist, and Fortune 500 executive, to the Renowned Leadership podcast. Ross is a public address announcer for Northwestern University basketball and football and is now a workplace communications trainer and coach. He shared three tips for effective communication: 1) Everything communicates, 2) Know your audience, and 3) Tell a story. Gary Ross suggests that communication should be done through storytelling and that it is essential to be aware of both the audience's communication style and one's own. Stephen also recommends Donald Miller's book Building a Story Brand to help craft stories. Finally, Gary shares his experience of using storytelling to communicate difficult news with more compassion. Gary helps leaders communicate without filler words by addressing the root causes of their communication issues, such as nervousness or lack of preparation, and by providing strategies such as pausing, reflecting, and asking for feedback. He also emphasizes the importance of closing the loop in communication to ensure alignment and show empathy. Gary Ross discussed the concept of the change curve, which is similar to the stages of grief when something changes. He explained that it is crucial for leaders to acknowledge that their people need time and space to go through the change curve on their own, as everyone goes through it at different times and speeds. He also discussed his courses and e-learning classes on workplace communication and leading through change. • Inside Dewar's Aberfeldy with Gary Ross
    Inside Whisky

If we told you that there is a distillery in the Scottish Highlands, which is beautifully situated, easily accessible, has a very rich history, but which is still quite often overlooked, would you want to know more about it – especially if you knew that they promise you the “golden dram”? Well, we were certainly intrigued and once we visited for the first time, we couldn’t but visit many more times in the following years. Of course, we’re talking about Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery, where we met with Gary Ross, distilleries ambassador for John Dewar & Sons, to record this episode in the distillery’s visitor centre. Gary, who describes himself as a “mega whisky nerd” was absolutely wonderful and we had a great time wandering about the distillery and then also recording with him. He is extremely knowledgeable, very likeable and tremendously enthusiastic and excited about whisky. If that wasn’t enough already, he also calls himself a “sub-par home brewer” and he is a member of the Bacardi Boyband – if you want to know what that is all about, just listen in! We hope you will enjoy listening to the episode as much as we did recording it. Let Miriam and Martin take you with them on their journey to Aberfeldy to spend an hour with Gary Ross, chatting about all things Aberfeldy (and more).
