This iconic work by Dave Isay and Stacy Abramson is a vivid portrait of New York City’s Bowery, before it got swallowed by a museum and high end retail and luxury real estate. In the late 90’s The Sunshine Hotel remained one of the last flophouses left on the Bowery, New York’s skid row. As you meet the cast of characters at the Sunshine hotel you will be transported to another time in New York City history. This small collection of oral histories from one Bowery hotel became catalyst for StoryCorps, a collection of over 630,000 oral histories now stored in the Library of Congress. ***** Original Series Credits: This documentary comes from Sound Portraits Productions, a mission-driven independent production company that was created by Dave Isay in 1994. Sound Portraits was the predecessor to StoryCorps and was dedicated to telling stories that brought neglected American voices to a national audience. Produced By: David Isay, Nathan Smith, Stacy Abramson, and Suzanne Clores

Since 2003, when David Isay founded StoryCorps, he has been on a mission of finding hope, even at the darkest times. Since 2003, StroryCorps has conducted more than 700,000 interviews, and has recently launched a new project, One Small Step, bringing together people with different political views, who relate to one another not as political foes, but as human beings with far more in common. David has won six Peabody Awards, a MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship, and the 2015 TED Prize for his work. We caught up in advance of his presentation at Westerly, Rhode Island's United Theater on July 26.

We go back to the night in June 1969 at the New York City Stonewall Inn that sparked the LGBT rights movement. On today's show we'll hear about the day that galvanized a generation and the continued fight for LGBT civil rights. The first Pride parades took place in June 1970 marking the 1st anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. Michael Schirker and David Isay bring us an oral history Remembering Stonewall: The Birth of a Movement. Editor at large of the Huffington Posts' Gay Voices Michelangelo Signorile says while there have been a series of recent wins for the LGBT rights movement, bigotry remains a daily reality for many. At a New America NYC forum Signorile spoke with June Thomas, Culture Critic and Editor of Outward, Slate's LGBTQ Section about what he calls "victory blindness". It's a central theme in his new book, "It's Not Over, Getting to Beyond Tolerance Defeating Homophobia and Winning True Equality." Special thanks to Pacifica Radio Archives for "Remembering Stonewall: The Birth of a Movement" produced by David Isay for Pacifica Radio, New America NYC for "It's Not Over: Winning True Equality."
