When the teaser trailer for 28 Years Later dropped, it seemed clear that the film wouldn't be a safe, mindless retread of previous material looking to cash in on fan nostalgia. It was visually striking, poetic, foreboding, and promised a dark, brutal world that not only has experienced a viral outbreak, but has evolved to, as much as people collectively can, live with it. Danny Boyle and Alex Garland were cooking up something special and we couldn't wait! Film journalist and friend of the show Brandon Streussnig returns to discuss Danny Boyle's debut film Shallow Grave , a British riff on the 90s neo-noir template, self-described by Boyle and his collaborators as their take on the Coen's Blood Simple. The film chronicles a trifecta of beautiful, sociopathic yuppies sharing an Edinburgh flat (Kerry Fox, Christopher Eccleston, and Ewan McGregor) who unravel after the untimely death of their new roommate and the discovery of a suitcase full of cash. Frenetic, aesthetically bold, and brimming with terrific performances from its cast of newcomers, Shallow Grave stood in stark opposition to the more muted social realism of established British filmmakers of the era like Mike Leigh and Ken Loach and showcased the collaborative power of Boyle, McGregor, screenwriter John Hodge, and producer Andrew Macdonald only a handful of years removed from their landmark feature, Trainspotting . We discuss Boyle's aesthetic inclinations, his history in the theater, and how the cinematic medium can liberate a particular type of artist from the confines of the stage. Then, we unpack the film's stellar trio of performances, its economy of character, and especially McGregor's star-making turn that suggests the greatness he would achieve with Boyle in their next several collaborations. Finally, we explore the film's ire for post-Thatcherite individualism, its attacks on the moral vacuum of the upwardly mobile, the dramatic irony of a film about the corruptability of money even for those who don't need it. In addition, we spend a brief moment looking forward to Boyle's latest film 28 Years Later (a full Bonus episode on the film coming later this week) and what it supposes for Boyle's late period. It’s Die Hard in a museum…with a monster! Hyams Hive rise up! This week, Phil and Liam take a field trip to visit THE RELIC, Peter Hyams’ expertly directed 1997 horror flick. They are accompanied on their scientific expedition by special guest Brandon Streussnig, one of the most influential and entertaining film writers around! After experimenting with psychotropic drugs while on a trip to South America, anthropologist John Whitney makes an alarming discovery, and attempts to prevent the return of several crates of research material to the US. Weeks later, the crates arrive and are sent to their intended destination at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago - an area that is suddenly beset with a series of grisly murders. As detective Vincent D’Agosta (Tom Sizemore) investigates, he and evolutionary biologist Dr. Margot Green (Penelope Ann Miller) come to the horrifying realization that a literal monster is now on the loose…and that they, and dozens of other citizens, are now trapped inside the museum along with the marauding beast! The film writer Brandon Streussnig (Vulture, Fangoria, GQ) joins the pod for a discussion about the undersung director Peter Hyams through four of his science fiction movies across a career full of genre work, films that reveal a singular style can be applied to a craftsman, a former Chicago newsman turned director who also (controversially for his industry) served as his own cinematographer. His all-star conspiracy theory thriller Capricorn One (1977) established Hyams as a filmmaker who could fuse suspense and science-fiction. He would follow this with 1981’s Outland , a hybrid of Alien and High Noon starring Sean Connery, criticized at the time for being derivative but which rips when seen today, a dystopic vision of a future world ravaged by capitalism on steroids that actually anticipated the themes and production design of Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner the following year. Brandon and I make the case for 2010 , Hyams’ 1984 sequel to Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey , as a worthy followup if not an essential work, offering a hopeful and utopic vision of man’s future contrasted against Kubrick’s colder take. Set against the topical US/Soviet arms race of the Reagan era and packed with thrills, it’s a much better film than you’ve been led to believe. And of course there’s Timecop , the biggest hit Jean-Claude Van Damme ever had. This episode means to introduce you to the work of Peter Hyams, solid entertainments across many genres and ripe for rediscovery.
