Letterboxd head of editorial Mitchell Beaupre returns to us this week to close out Pride month with one of Luca Guadagnino’s most divisive films. In 2024, with audiences still under the spell of Challengers , the director also brought to the screen a long-gestating passion project: an adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ Queer . Starring Daniel Craig as Burroughs alter ego William Lee, the film baroquely mines queer longing in an addiction story that earned as many fans as it did detractors. This episode, we talk about Guadagnino’s preference for Queer over Challengers in the 2024 race and how Craig was in the Best Actor race until the final minute. We also talk about expectations that Guadagnino would return to Call Me By Your Name territory, how this film might troll critics of that film’s sexual modesty, and Lesley Manville’s brief turn as wild doctor in the jungle. It’s Die Hard on the streets! The movie follows a squad of National Guardsmen doing exercises in the Louisiana swamps. After some painfully avoidable events, the men become hunted and are on the run for their lives against an enemy of their own making in a place that, while actually being part of their own homeland, they find entirely foreign. On the one hand, the film is a perfectly thrilling and taut entertainment. However, it's also a substantive look at White male entitlement, American exceptionalism, militarism, race relations, and more. Letterboxd's very own Mitchell Beaupre returns after their debut a couple years ago for a nail-biting discussion on one of our premiere action-thriller directors working today. Jeremy Saulnier has a terrific new movie out on Netflix called Rebel Ridge which we review at length in addition to the rest of his filmography. For the first half hour though after the introduction, we review a little-talked about movie that just came out called Megalopolis by an obscure director named Francis Ford Coppola. Then after our conversation, you get to hear an archival interview I did about a decade ago with Jeremy Saulnier promoting the release of Green Room ! All in all, you're in for a treat.
