On this episode, we speak with cultural critic and podcaster Anna Khachiyan about the world of alternative media platforms, how parenthood (sometimes) changes what you say on the internet, and being an internet troll. She gives us a cultural lesson in the long-standing beef between pornography and feminism, and offers a brief look behind the curtain of her public persona as a hardened internet edgelord.
Convening around the topic of the culd oddity that is the 2000 Cash Money Records produced film Baller Blockin', Anna K wades into her love of hip-hop culture, the differences between the intellectualism of New York rap versus the ratchet experimentalism of Deep South rap, shared Cape Cod roots, and more SUBSCRIBE FOR FULL EPISODE LINKS: Follow Anna on Twitter: @annakhachiyan Red Scare Podcast

In today's joyous episode, we saunter into the loft apartment, take a draw on our gauloise, and glance icily into a world of bohemian hipsters living their best postmodern tradcath lives. Welcome to the irony-drenched world of 'Red Scare', a popular podcast hosted (sardonically) by Anna Khachiyan and Dasha Nekrasova. Also joining them in the episode we cover is hip writer and artist, Tao Lin, a pioneer in the alt-lit world. Get ready for hours of 'transgressive' insights, independent research, dorm-room philosophies and monotone delivery. Thrill at their 'edgy' humour, bespoke theories of autism, standard anti-vax bullshit, and all of the usual positions you find with postmodern conservatism. You will learn things like how Tao Lin diagnosed his cat with autism, how long each host was breastfed, why half of Americans will be non-verbal in 2050, how Trump's anti-vaccine conspiracies make him trustworthy, the best way to chug your bootleg raw milk, and that thick books are always full of reliable facts. When it is all brought together, although we might not have an episode that is lighting up the gurometer, we do have a rather contemporary melange of postmodern-conservatism, trad-cath lifehacks, new-age spirituality, anti-vax conspiracy theories, and irony-laced, not even bothered, posturing. So like... enjoy... or whatever... Also features a discussion of Elon Musk's latest grandiosity, some unexpected guru clashing, and confirmation that Chris and Matt are not cool enough to be invited to your next Bohemian soiree. When The Free Press decided to rent a theater with 1,600 seats for our first-ever live debate a few months ago, most people looked at us with a mixture of pity and concern. We would have to fill all 1,600 seats. The theater we’d booked in L.A.—not exactly a city known for its culture of public debates—was smack in the middle of downtown, where after-hours can look a little bit like San Francisco during the day. To make matters worse, we had only managed to get the place on a Wednesday night. We did it anyway. And we sold out every seat in the house. People came from all over: Vancouver, Seattle, New York, Nevada, Montana. Someone drove a retrofitted school bus from SF to hold an after-party for whoever wanted to come. There were three young priests who drove many miles to see the action, and at least one porn star who took a flight. Also in attendance: libertarian frat bros in suits; e-girls with Elf Bars ; trad boys who wondered aloud if the concession popcorn had seed oil; dads who had to run out to check in with the babysitter; actors from your favorite TV shows; comedians you’ve never heard of; writers you love to hate; angry Catholics; resigned atheists; closeted Trump voters; Mormons saving themselves for marriage; young gay couples in crop tops; feminists; anti-feminists; and a whole lot of podcasters. The point is: that night, we got a sense of how diverse this community is, and holy shit , was it exciting. We learned that The FP isn’t just a newsletter and that Honestly isn’t just a podcast. We have built a community of curious people. And most importantly, we learned that debate isn’t dead. So for today’s episode, we wanted to share the full debate from that evening for those of you who couldn’t be in the theater. The proposition was this: has the sexual revolution failed? With the hindsight that comes with half a century, four brilliant women—Sarah Haider, Grimes, Anna Khachiyan, and Louise Perry—debated whether the movement that promised women sexual equality and liberation has fulfilled its promises, or whether it has failed women. . . and maybe men too? Listen and decide for yourself. Special and huge thanks to FIRE, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, without whom this event would never have been possible. Bari Weiss recently held a "debate" about the failure of the sexual revolution. Expensive tickets to the Theater at the Ace Hotel in downtown LA allowed you to see Grimes and Sarah Haider talk about motherhood, porn, and woke culture with Anna Khachiyan and Louise Perry. And the results were...rather boring, says journalist Michelle Lhooq. Derek gets the lowdown from Lhooq, who wonders how the New Right captured the cool factor of the American counterculture—and how the Left gets it back. In this episode, the girls/wom(y)n — aka Meghan Daum and Sarah Haider — tackle the subject of academic tenure and ask whether it actually encourages ideological conformity at universities. Also under discussion: have the social sciences have been captured? Why are so many administrators? Moreover, why do universities bend over backward to cater to 18-year-olds when the people who really matter are aging donors? Finally, in this episode: AT LONG LAST we learn what Sarah and Meghan were like in high school: Meghan was a writing and oboe prodigy who was borderline learning disabled in other areas, and Sarah was just a little too good at convincing people that assisted suicide is a good thing. In the bonus, the g*rls/wom*n discuss all of you who have hate-subscribed just to spite us, answer some premium subscriber questions, and ask if universities fail their missions when they are politically motivated. Today the girls/women discuss the phenomenon of Oliver Anthony, the breakout star behind the hit song Rich Men North of Richmond Is he actually a music industry plant and does it matter? Are political songs all terrible, or is it just Sarah’s opinions? Next, they talk about the New York Times’ evangelical zeal of reporting on hate crimes. In two recent, high-profile cases, a store owner was shot for defending a pride flag and a man was stabbed at a gas station while vogueing. Meghan and Sarah question whether or not there is more to these stories. In the bonus segment, Meghan and Sarah talk about how much they love libraries — except for when they try to shush their free speech .
