  • Naomi Klein & Astra Taylor — End Times Fascism: And the Fight for the Living World - with Wajahat Ali
    Politics and Prose Presents

A scathing investigation into the apocalyptic thinking of the Christian nationalists, tech-bro reactionaries, and populist survivalists who increasingly define the contemporary right—and a recipe for how to fight them. As the planet burns and shared reality melts, a new iteration of the far right is on the march. How can we understand this dangerous new development, and what resources can we draw on to resist it? In their scathing assessment of the contemporary scene, the celebrated activists and authors Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor explore how the religious fundamentalists, Silicon Valley technologists, and ethno-nationalists who make up this apocalyptic alliance share more than one might think: they are united in their belief that some kind of cleansing cataclysm is coming, whether through the manifestation of messianic prophecy, the rampages of a resource- and job-consuming artificial intelligence, or the purported existential threat of immigration and cultural replacement. Rather than avoiding this conflagration, they welcome it, convinced they will be among the saved on the other side. “End Times Fascism” is the ideology of the actors who strive to make the world unlivable and then seek to protect themselves from the fallout—whether by repairing to luxurious private islands, rocketing off to Mars, or bunkering the nation to keep their enemies at bay. The new survivalists have accumulated power, but they are far from impregnable. As Klein and Taylor show via original reporting and analysis, their many internal conflicts and contradictions and their nihilistic inability to envision a shared future, even for their ostensible allies, leave them vulnerable to a new kind of “pro-life” politics—rooted in reverence for our shared existence and regard for the earth we inhabit and must protect. Naomi Klein is an award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker, and the bestselling author of Doppelganger , No Logo , The Shock Doctrine , and other classic books, which have been translated into thirty-five languages. She is an associate professor of geography and a codirector of the Centre for Climate Justice at the University of British Columbia, and she writes a regular column for The Guardian . Doppelganger won the Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction and was named one of the ten best books of the year by New York , Slate , and Time . Astra Taylor is an award-winning writer, activist, and documentarian, and a co-founder of the Debt Collective. She is the author of The People’s Platform , which won the American Book Award; Democracy May Not Exist, but We’ll Miss It When It’s Gone ; and The Age of Insecurity . Taylor regularly writes for publications including The New Yorker and The New York Times . Taylor toured with the band Neutral Milk Hotel and was the 2023 CBC Massey Lecturer. Klein and Taylor will be in conversation with Wajahat Ali , a tired, middle aged father of 3 kids who drives an Honda Odyssey Minivan and is now a Costco Executive Member. Previously, when he had hair, he was a contributor to The New York Times and CNN, author of the play The Domestic Crusaders, and co-host of "The Stream" on Al Jazeera America. Now, he edits The Left Hook Substack and writes a column for The Progressive. • Every Accusation Is a Confession - Live with Wajahat Ali on Media Bias and Apartheid

I came back on THE LEFT HOOK with Wajahat Ali to call out a double standard—CBS ran a headline tying Michigan Senate candidate Dr. Abdul El-Sayed to 9/11, 25 years after the fact, for no reason other than his faith. All while cable news spent days demanding Democrats condemn streamer Hasan Piker, yet Neera Tanden can openly amplify Laura Loomer's Islamophobic attacks on Black and Muslim candidates and face zero consequences from her own party. This is the same anti-Shariah playbook we fought 15 years ago, now aimed at DEI, trans people, and any Democrat who won’t fall in line—including Dr. El-Sayed, who just won his primary after being outspent 11 to 1 by AIPAC-aligned money, and Angie Nixon, who won hers outspent almost 20 to 1. Democratic leadership still won’t fully back either of them. Wajahat also shares what he saw reporting from the occupied West Bank for his Atlantic documentary: a village whose well was deliberately poisoned and then filled with cement so residents now have to buy back their own water at six times the price. • 210: Khamenei of Errors, with Wajahat Ali

Matt and Daniel are back in their respective local grooves, and they’re joined by The Left Hook’s Wajahat Ali to discuss the Iran deal and Israel’s best efforts to undermine it, and the terrifying notion of a marriage between the US and Israeli militaries. And that’s just the first half of the show! In the second half we’ve got Israeli Knicks poetry, Lizzy Savetsky’s red carpet carping, and Gwyneth Paltrow’s condo con, though. • Intelligent Masculinity | With Wajahat Ali
    Intelligent Masculinity

“I would add another aspect of intelligent masculinity — spending time knowing yourself. There's a great saying in Islam, and it's in most traditional traditions: know yourself and you'll know your creator. And this includes knowing the bad parts of yourself, the weak parts of yourself, the messy parts of yourself. That requires radical honesty with yourself. Where am I good? What am I bad at? What do I take pride in? Where can I get better? Maybe it's not the women's fault. Maybe it's not the immigrants' fault. Maybe there's something inside me — something broken, or maybe I'm projecting something, maybe there's an insecurity. That's an intelligent aspect of masculinity — which is why it's so frightening that Marc Andreessen, one of the broligarchs, is literally saying he's not into self-reflection.” ~ THE LEFT HOOK with Wajahat Ali ~ Masculinity In Review In this 21st interview of Intelligent Masculinity, Nick Paro brought THE LEFT HOOK with Wajahat Ali — writer, commentator, and host of The Left Hook — into the conversation. This conversation aired during Ramadan, with Waj fasting and still showing up fully present — which both acknowledged as a framing for the conversation. They covered what a prophetic model of masculinity actually looks like in practice, how men learn to externalize blame instead of looking inward, and what changes when men stop running from self-reflection and start treating it as a discipline. This is one of the most spiritually grounded conversations — at time mirroring the discussion with Qasim Rashid, Esq. — and one of the most honest about the gap between the masculinity men inherit and the one they actually choose. Waj opened by naming what’s visible across the current political and media landscape: men who perform strength because they lack it. He called them cosplay crusaders — broken men LARPing dominance. Pete Hegseth banned photographers over an unflattering photo. Marc Andreessen publicly announced he does not self-reflect. Kash Patel proposed having UFC fighters train federal “officers”. These aren’t displays of power; they’re displays of damage. Waj’s argument is that the through-line for most of these men is the same — unprocessed father wounds that never got named — and that understanding the source is the first step toward building something different. The alternative Waj offered came directly from his faith. As a practicing Muslim, he drew on the prophetic model of masculinity — the example of the Prophet Muhammad, who never struck his children, never raised his voice at his wife, and treated restraint and gentleness as expressions of strength rather than departures from it. There’s a narration of the Prophet cutting away the section of his shawl rather than disturb a sleeping cat. That image — a man powerful enough to let small things be — cuts directly against the domination model that currently passes for strength in American culture. Waj’s point is not religious in the narrow sense — it’s practical. Warmth, presence, and self-governance are what actually earn trust and love from the people closest to you. His father supplied the lived model. Waj described a man who immigrated from Pakistan, raised a family with his mother for 48 years, and never once asked where she was going, penny-pinched her independence, or treated her freedom as a threat to his identity. His father was secure — genuinely, quietly secure — and that security transmitted. Waj connected it directly to his own marriage: his wife Sarah has told him that his confidence, his refusal to perform jealousy, is part of why s

  • The Missing FBI Interviews - with Wajahat Ali
    The Panicked Writer

As they do, the DOJ dropped more files tonight when we were all settling down for the evening. But it wasn’t just emails and court documents, it was the missing 302s discovered by NPR just a week ago. But of the 53 pages of FBI interviews, we only got 16, meaning we’re still missing 37 pages of a young girl’s testimony (now a woman) about being abused by Donald Trump, Jeffrey Epstein, and a man named “Jim Atkins,” who may be an academic out of the University of Ohio, Leslie Wexner’s territory. Another “Mr. Atkins,” you may remember, showed up in the unknown survivor’s journal, c. 1999-2003, which Zev Shalev and I decoded and wrote about a few weeks ago. We still need the other 37 pages, along with millions of files that inevitably contain the 15-year friendship between Epstein and Trump, but for today we are beginning to piece together the global, multi-industry, trillion-dollar club that abused kids for four decades. More to come. Thanks for joining me THE LEFT HOOK with Wajahat Ali . • Fascism Is Here. How Do We Fight Back?: A Conversation with Wajahat Ali

It’s been a few minutes, but I sat down with my friend Wajahat Ali of THE LEFT HOOK with Wajahat Ali and had a long discussion about what is happening with the Democratic Party’s failure to oppose fascism, what each and every one of us can do to both pressure them but also prepare on our own to fight, and a whole lot more. • On Diversity and Democracy With Wajahat Ali
    The State Of Belief

This week on The State of Belief , popular writer and commentator Wajahat Ali joins host Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush for a thought-provoking exploration of patriotism, diversity, and democracy in today’s politically charged climate. Waj shares his unique perspective on the responsibilities that immigrants and citizens face amid the continuing societal impacts of the Trump administration's policies. Together, they unravel the moral and ethical dilemmas of maintaining integrity in chaotic times, while drawing on historical and religious narratives to emphasize the importance of long-term justice and equality. Life is more than serving a cause we believe in, no matter how urgent that may be. And so they reflect on balancing professional aspirations with personal commitments. Waj opens up about his daughter’s passion for dance and her journey as a cancer survivor, juxtaposed with his career in writing and advocacy. They also tackle the power of storytelling in political activism and its role in challenging misinformation and fear-based tactics. The conversation delves into important themes, including: Navigating Patriotism, Diversity, and Democracy: Paul and Waj discuss the challenges faced by immigrants and citizens in a fascist political climate, emphasizing the importance of ethical grounding and personal responsibility. Finding Purpose and Superpowers: Waj has inspiring things to say about the roles available to each of us, if we’re truly interested in making a difference. There are strengths everyday citizens bring, even if that’s integrity and honesty as an act of resistance to corruption and lies. Christian Nationalism and Authoritarianism: Christian Nationalism demands the suppression of diverse stories in the service of a single self-serving narrative. It uses fear and ignorance to advance a specific kind of White Christian agenda, targeting, in turn, LGBTQ, Black, Muslim, and Jewish communities – and leaving no room, in the end, even for dissenting White Christians like Mike Pence. Wajahat Ali is the author of Go Back to Where You Came From and Other Helpful Recommendations on How to Become an American. He has a very popular Substack, The Left Hook With Wajahat Ali, and co-hosts The Democracy-ish Podcast . Waj is a Daily Beast columnist, a writer, television commentator and keen observer of what this country seems to be doing to itself. The child of immigrants, he's an invaluable contributor to the conversation around patriotism, diversity and democracy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • The Need for a Popular Front: A Conversation With Wajahat Ali

I am so grateful for Wajahat Ali. When I began this journey back in 2015 and 2016, I was quick to understand how dangerous the gathering authoritarian movement was and what the implications were for Americans. What I didn’t understand, but would learn quickly, was how a culture of denial and complicity enabled and worsened that crisis. Wajahat understood too, and along with a handful of others, their kindness, solidarity, and clarity steadied and inspired me. We are incredibly, incredibly lucky to have Wajahat in the world fighting the good fight. Wajahat and I sat down to talk on Wednesday to address the big tangle of crises we now face, including the threat of Project 2025, the continuing debate over Joe Biden’s candidacy, the rightward trajectory and radicalization of our culture, politics, and media, and more. I hope you’ll watch our discussion and check out Wajahat’s Substack The Left Hook , an invaluable hub for his thoughts and analysis. • Riada talks to Wajahat Ali - on complex identities, pushing through parenting challenges, spirituality and much more!

This was an incredibly enriching, fun and powerful conversation!! I felt like I was truly heard and seen by Waj who carefully listened to all the stuff I shared with him, ranging from pain due to the increasing Bosnian genocide denial to fulfillment I gain from some of my spiritual practices (and some that we share in common!). I also carefully and genuinely paid attention and appreciated Waj's candid insights and openness about numerous topics - from the present political moment in the USA to the stories of the unexpected parenting challenges that fortunately he and his family have successfully overcome, as his little daughter Nusayba got diagnosed with cancer and now healed of it. Waj also graciously shared some tips on the resilience that his family built and how those now help them now push through this global pandemic.Waj took off spontaneously with a chat on politics, which led to him sharing observations and experiences from Bosnia and Herzegovina, when he visited Sarajevo a few years ago, how he "connects the dots" and urges others to do so too, and then to me opening up and vulnerably sharing some nuances of the layers of my identity. All of it was therapeutic and triggering - in a good way!Later on, we talked about Nusayba healing of cancer, the importance of a community in that process, of kindness, of necessity of accepting help etc... Finally, we delved into a wonderful chat on (Islamic) spirituality, and benefits of thankfulness and patience. Then I also made Waj agree that he'll have to write a cooking book at some point! We talked about optimism, pessimism, my "Balkan paranoia" and all the right dance moves.Listen more for an hour of a wonderful bonding and an easy-going, organic conversation that started with trust and developed more through vulnerable sharing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, and be on the lookout for Wajahat's new forthcoming book!Wajahat Ali is a New York Times Contributing op-ed writer, a TED speaker, an award-winning playwright, a recovering attorney as he says, and a former consultant for the US State Department.

  • Re-writing The Islam Hate Narrative with Wajahat Ali
    Stories of Transformation

“It’s easy to dehumanize an entire group of people if you don’t know their story.” -Wajahat Ali Wajahat Ali is a New York Times Contributing Op-Ed writer, public speaker, recovering attorney and tired dad of two cute kids. His essays, interviews, and reporting have appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and New York Review of Books. He is the author of the play The Domestic Crusaders and lead author of the investigative report Fear Inc: The Roots of the Islamophobia Network in America. In this episode of Stories of Transformation, we get to hear the stories and life lessons learned of a man who has not only survived a near death experience of his own, but has also faced a parent's worst nightmare. His daughter, at two years old, was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer the day he had to step on stage to give a TED Talk, in which he planned to make the case that people in developed countries should be having children. Not only that, but we also get a history and political lesson on Islamophobia and how it's actually been in existence for thousands of years, not just post 9/11. We gain a deep understanding as to why this matters, in the context of political foreign policies that have been built on conspiracy theories. Wajahat shares about his upbringing as often the only brown person in the room, forced to become a cultural ambassador of sorts post 9/11 and how this experience led to his passion and ultimately his career in storytelling. He now teaches the younger generation of minorities how to use their personal stories for social change. Wajahat's unique blend of expert storytelling, humor, knowledge, and vulnerability make for an informative and entertaining conversation filled with "aha" moments, laughter, and new perspective. “Sometimes it takes a tragedy for us to wake up and pay witness to the chaos that was always under our nose." -Wajahat Ali Full show notes: https://www.baktashahadi.com/shownotes/rewriting-the-islam-hate-narrative-with-wajahat-ali Connect with Wajahat Ali https://www.wajali.com/ https://twitter.com/wajahatali Follow/Support Stories of Transformation and Baktash Ahadi: https://www.baktashahadi.com/support https://www.instagram.com/stories_of_transformation/ https://www.facebook.com/Stories-of-Transformation-110335937120068/
