Send us a text In this episode we’re talking about the Sam Kerr racial harassment case with Eve Howell, the Chair of Ember Connect. Kerr was found not guilty of racially aggravated harassment in February, following an incident in January 2023. After a night out with her partner Kristie Mewis, Kerr vomited out of the window of their taxi home. When the taxi driver locked the door, changed direction and started driving erratically, Kerr and Mewis called the police and kicked out a window. The driver eventually ended up at Twickenham policed station, where Kerr climbed out the broken window only to face derision and disbelief from the police when she explained what had happened. Check out the links below to find out more, and don't miss the bodycam footage, which clearly shows the context of Kerr's "stupid and white" comment to a police officer. Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis announced they're expecting their first child this week – but what was supposed to be a cause for celebration ended up leading to a torrent of misogynistic and homophobic abuse directed at Kerr and Mewis. The VERSUS team reflects on what this means for the current state of fan culture and the decline of ‘Football Twitter’ as a safe space. Elsewhere, we ask whether declining attendances in the WSL is genuine cause for concern, and explore how Nike’s long-anticipated T90 return will shake up the football-culture space. ‘The Future of Football’ is a podcast from VERSUS bringing you closer to the people, the stories and the ideas shaping the future of the game we love
Sam Kerr's face has been splashed on the front of newspapers and news sites in recent times - but not for the reasons we're used to. She's being accused of racial harassment for calling a police officer a "stupid white b*****d". Some are calling it "reverse racism", but is that even a thing? This week, Angela Priestley and Tarla Lambert also discuss how gender equality could actually be going backwards based on new data, plus a historic announcement from the Albanese government on superannuation and paid parental leave. Stories included this week: France becomes first country to enshrine abortion rights into the constitution The solidarity of two women from across party lines has rattled the old guard. That can only be a good thing. Sam Kerr called a police officer a ‘stupid white bastard’. Is ‘reverse racism’ a real thing? Progress on gender equality went backwards in 2023, according to Financy Women’s Index ‘Historic reform’: Government to pay super to parents on paid parental leave The Crux is produced by Agenda Media, the 100% women founded and owned media business, publishing the daily news publication Women's Agenda.
