Follow Mikey Neumann— it's freeZoe Wells and Mikey Neumann of FilmJoy join us to revisit Tim Story's superhero sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007). Released 2 years after Fox's surprising box office success with the original, the film marks a transitional moment in superhero cinema. Neither beloved or entirely dismissed, it's a sequel that manages to improve on its predecessor with world-ending stakes while still feeling oddly weightless and safe. Arriving just before the Marvel juggernaut truly found its stride with the release of Iron Man the following year, it flirted with cosmic grandeur (reimagining Galactus as an ominous V'ger style space cloud) while keeping one foot firmly planted in the PG, family-friendly camp with its will-they-won't-they wedding B-plot. As a second attempt at a reboot tops the box office, is it worth revisiting this one and enjoying its strengths? Or is it rightly consigned to oblivion? Find out! We're back at last! And what better way to start the year than being reunited with FilmJoy's Mikey Neumann and Zoe Wells for another Kevin Costner apocalypse movie? This time it's 1997's The Postman – the tale of a travelling one-man-and-one-mule Shakespeare company who, after his acting partner is killed and turned into paste by a roving fascist militia, accidentally starts a religion around a basic infrastructure service that brings hope to the ragged survivors of the third world war. It's heartfelt. It's three hours long. It strangely features most of Kevin's children – in one case, as a townsperson who makes a pass at him. But is it a bloated vanity project or a hidden gem that's more relevant now than it was in the 90s? Find out! Follow FilmJoy on YouTube and, if you're brave, Mikey and Zoe on the smouldering wreckage of Twitter! Follow us on Threads , Facebook , Instagram and maybe Twitter , if it's still functioning. The meeting of minds is back! This week the boys are fanboying all over the place as for some reason Mikey Neumann, creator of FilmJoy and Movies with Mikey on YouTube has joined to discuss and pitch his own sequel for 2002's Post-apocalyptic science-fantasy Reign of Fire, directed by Rob Bowman and starring Matthew McConaughey, Christian Bale, Izabella Scorupco and Gerard Butler Expect far more human baddies than dragon baddies, Janelle Monae and Sting as dragon hunting mercenaries, and Mikey just generally showing why he does this for a living while the rest of us are just amateurs. Mikey Neumann Mikey Neumann is the creator of the YouTube channel Filmjoy. On his show, Movies with Mikey, he talks about the artistry of film and why movies are great, and you should check them both out if you haven't already. Mikey on YouTube @mikeyface on X @mikey.neumann on Instagram Quick production note - Matt's mic swapped to the wrong one about 3 minutes from the end of the episode. Mikey Neumann and Zoe Wells of FilmJoy join us as we scoop up Kevin Costner's sci-fi action adventure Waterworld (1995) from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Yes, it's the film that reunited him with Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) director Kevin Reynolds and then, $175 million dollars and a box office bomb later, caused their second acrimonious split. But can a film with Dennis Hopper in an eye patch be all that bad? Is Jeanne Tripplehorn playing a character or is she merely extant? Is a central character irredeemable if he hurls a small child into the ocean? Find out! Check out FilmJoy on the YouTubes and follow Zoe and Mikey on the Tweets!
