Melvyn Bragg has announced he is to step down from presenting the In Our Time podcast . The 85 year-old first joined the BBC in 1961; the podcast and radio programme has aired since October 1998, and is one of the most popular podcasts from the BBC. In Our Time was the first podcast from the BBC, put into an RSS feed in Nov 2004 by Matt Webb of BBC Radio & Music Interactive. One of the latest episodes in the podcast feed, broadcast in July, was entitled “Civility: talking with those who disagree with you”. While Bragg says the show has a “wholly misleading title”, what could be more “In Our Time”? YouTube appears to be having trouble importing RSS feeds once more, and the service is sending emails to many podcasters claiming it has failed to retrieve their latest episodes. A number of podcast hosts have had similar reports: it’s up to YouTube to fix. Patreon has launched updated creator pages . “The new creator page is available to all creators, but it won’t go live until you publish it for your fans.” > > > Read more of today’s podcast industry news stories on the Podnews website : and get our free daily newsletter. We have a broadcasting legend for you today on Rosebud, as Gyles interviews the creator and host of In Our Time and The South Bank Show, Melvyn Bragg, Lord Bragg of Wigton. Melvyn takes Gyles back to his roots in Wigton, a small town in Cumbria, in which his parents ran one of the local pubs, and the young Bragg played all day long in the streets, making bows and arrows from trees overhanging the river. He tells Gyles about his schooldays, the brilliant teachers who guided him and there's a really interesting discussion of the unexpected mental health problems he had as a teenager. He takes us to Oxford University, where he fell in love with cinema, and was encouraged to apply for a BBC traineeship. And we hear about some of the landmark interviews of his career, with Francis Bacon and Paul McCartney. But its Bragg's evocation of his working class childhood which will really stay with you - this is a journey to a special time and place which no longer really exists. Hosted on Acast. ...in which we return to post-war Cumbria in the company of author, broadcaster and parliamentarian, Melvyn Bragg, to reflect on his early years in the market town of Wigton. Evoking a close-knit community on the threshold of change, Melvyn describes daily life in the Black-a-Moor inn – the Bragg family home for a decade – and celebrates the rich diversity of small-town working class culture: of hound dog trailing; dances; and Youth Hostel trips to the Lakes. Following a breakdown aged 13, Melvyn explains the role education and reading played in his recovery, and the fork in the road that tore him from the community he loved. Finally, we learn why “Wigton men just fight for the love of fighting”, why walking is the best way of understanding a place, why Binsey is best, and why it’s time to rebuild Hadrian's Wall... around the whole of Cumbria… You can buy Back in the Day from all good bookshops, including bookscumbria.com/product/cumbrian-books/arts-and-literature/fiction/melvyn-bragg/back-in-the-day-2/
