Welcome to Episode 59 of This is Not Happening (TINH), an Album of the Month (AOTM) Podcast. We're missing a team-member this month as Davide is on an Anglo-French diplomatic mission. In Part 1 we deep dive into an Album that one of us has chosen and in Part 2 we play 'Spin it or Bin it'. We pick a theme and each pick a song that represents that theme. He thought it was an interesting album but he was far from loving it. Has that changed in a month? In Part 2 , we celebrate New Music. This album has been launched in a quite dramatic and controversial environment following the collapse of Simz' relationship with former collaborator Inflo. What does Simz sound like without Inflo? Unser Album der Woche kommt aus London. Sie trifft mit ihrer neuesten Veröffentlichung mal wieder auf den Punkt. Little Simz ist zurück. Mit “Lotus” legt sie ihr sechstes Studioalbum vor, welches nach Neuanfang, nach Aufbruch, nach Schmerz, Wut und einer ganzen Menge Selbstbehauptung klingt. Schon der erste Track macht klar: Hier wird nichts beschönigt. In ‚Thief‘ geht es um Verrat, um das Ende einer langen kreativen Partnerschaft. Doch was Little Simz daraus macht, ist alles andere als destruktiv. Lotus entwickelt sich Schicht für Schicht, mit Elementen aus Punk, Soul, Jazz, Garage und Afrobeat. Ein Sound, der gleichzeitig roh und feinfühlig ist. Und das Ganze wie man es von ihr gewohnt ist: sprachlich messerscharf, emotional offen, und ein Sound zum immer und Überall hören. Im zweiten Drittel wird das Album leichter - zumindest klanglich. Songs wie Young oder Far Away, laden zum Kopfnicken ein und schaffen Raum zum Atmen. Mal verspielt, mal nachdenklich. Unterstützt wird Simz von starken Features: Obongjayar, Michael Kiwanuka, Lydia Kitto - sie alle bringen ihre eigene Zutat in den Mix. Und genau das macht Lotus so lebendig: Es ist tief, persönlich, aber nie erdrückend. Vielmehr ein Album, das trotz allem Dunkel den Drang zum Blühen feiert. “Lotus” ist nicht nur ein Statement, sondern ein Soundtrack für alle, die selbst am Wachsen sind.
