If you’re anything like me, then you’re not immune to the widespread recent interest in Mormon culture (anybody else love The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives?) . Enter Linda Hamilton, an ex-Mormon and the author of The Fourth Wife , a deliciously chilling, historical gothic horror with a feminist slant where a young Mormon woman is haunted by a malevolent presence in the decrepit Salt Lake City mansion she shares with her new husband and his other wives. Join us as we discuss how history and personal experience can inspire horror, religious trauma in horror, gothic novels, and how to manage the writing life. Linda Hamilton is an author and historian who is currently completing her Master’s in history at Sam Houston State University with a thesis on Mormon women in polygamy. Her debut novel The Fourth Wife (publishing March 31, 2026) is rooted in the real lives of women from her own family history and religious heritage. In this episode of Demon Toast , King Loke welcomes author Linda Hamilton to discuss her haunting new novel, The Fourth Wife . Set in 1880s Utah, the book peels back the veil on Mormon polygamy, reimagining it through a gothic horror lens. Together, they explore how Linda’s own experiences with religious trauma informed the story’s dark beauty and emotional depth. The conversation moves through the tangled intersections of faith, power, and womanhood, touching on the roles imposed by the church, the cost of devotion, and the quiet rebellion of art. Music, a recurring motif in The Fourth Wife , becomes a symbol of women’s yearning and sacrifice. The episode closes with a look at Linda’s creative process, her hopes for the novel’s release, and what lies ahead in her work. Though Section 89 of the Doctrine & Covenants describes itself as a "principle with promise," "to be sent by greeting, not by commandment or constraint," contemporary Church leadership has elevated some of its prohibitions to the level of requirement for temple worship. Other suggestions this section contains seem to be completely ignored. To complicate things, current medical research hasn't always supported the specific tenets that have been designated "commandments." No wonder lots of Latter-day Saints have lots of feelings about the Word of Wisdom and its application in our daily lives and choices! In Episode 244, Cynthia and Susan are joined by historian Linda Hamilton for a conversation unpacking it all. What do you think about the Word of Wisdom? What aspects of it feel relevant to your faith life? What are the narratives of women we find in its history and practice? And what parts of Word of Wisdom lore actually hold up to historical scrutiny?

Key Takeaways: Exit Planning is About Optionality, Not Just Selling Many business owners avoid thinking about exits too early, but Linda argues that preparing early builds resilience and optionality, not just a path to sell. The Cost of Not Preparing Citing a 30% valuation gap between male and female founders, Linda underscores how lack of preparation—especially around clean books, contracts, and succession—can significantly impact sale outcomes. Readiness vs. Attractiveness Linda encourages using assessments to evaluate both how attractive your business is to a buyer and how ready you are to exit. She shares a story of a founder nearly derailing a deal by not securing key employee agreements. Key Indicators of Exit-Readiness - Critical elements include: Clean, audited financials Signed client/vendor contracts Repeatable and documented systems Cash flow visibility and control over AR/AP Transferability & Systemology As a certified systemologist, Linda highlights the importance of mapping your customer journey and operational systems to ensure the business can run without you—critical for buyer confidence and deal value. Building a Support Team Successful exits rely on coordinated advisors: CPAs, attorneys, brokers, and wealth advisors. A SIPA-certified exit planner often acts as the “quarterback” to align everyone's efforts with the owner’s goals. Timing & Purpose Timing an exit is personal. Many owners regret selling too soon because they lack a post-exit purpose. Linda encourages planning for life after the sale as part of the overall exit strategy. Empowering Female Founders Linda advocates for financial fluency and readiness assessments to help women negotiate from a position of strength. Confidence comes from awareness—knowing your numbers, your risks, and your value. Final Advice: Linda wishes she had done her own business readiness assessments earlier in her career, highlighting how early preparation can influence smarter long-term decisions. -- Linda Hamilton is a CPA and CEPA, (Certified Exit Planning Advisor) who is passionate about helping women business owners achieve financial fluency to grow, profit & scale. Linda Hamilton explains, "I spent my whole life believing that spirituality was in big things. Visions from heaven, angels, signs. We always say in Mormonism, don't wait for a sign. You won't get a sign; you won't get a miracle. We say that...and then we go up in testimony meeting and talk about some sign we received." She describes having spent much of her youth wondering how to get things like signs, or a surefire testimony. "And now," she says, "I've really embraced [that] spirituality is small things. It's yoga, it's going for a walk, it's my cats, it's going to a Taylor Swift concert and feeling in communion with thousands of women." In Episode 219, Linda joins Susan and Cynthia for a conversation about where she's been, what she's learned, and how her experiences inform the path she's walking now.
