Glenn Greenwald outlines how free speech has become criminalised in the US. When the Political Left pushed censorship to protect vulnerable minority groups, the Political Right positioned itself as champions of free speech. However, once in power, the Political Right has criminalised criticism of Israel under the guise of fighting anti-Semitism. Glenn Greenwald: Criminalizing Dissent: Legacy of Russiagate w/ Alexander Mercouris and Glenn Diesen
Wow. According to the journalist and historian Eoin Higgins, right wing tech billionaires like Marc Andreessen, David Sacks and Peter Thiel have “bought” prominent anti establishment journalists like Glenn Greenwald and Matt Taibbi. That’s the highly provocative thesis at the heart of his new book Owned: How Tech Billionaires on the Right Bought the Loudest Voices on the Left . While I’m no great fan of the Greenwald/Taibbi school of paranoid anti-establishment journalism, I’m not totally convinced. After all, does working for an online publication partially funded by Thiel like Rumble really mean that you’ve been bought by him? But WTF do I know? Listen to Higgins for yourself. He certainly makes an interesting case for this highly controversial thesis. Here are the 5 KEEN ON takeaways for our conversation withHiggins: * Tech Billionaire Influence on Media: The conversation centers on how right-wing tech billionaires like Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, and Marc Andreessen have invested in and influenced alternative media platforms (like Rumble and Substack) as a response to what they perceived as hostile coverage from traditional media outlets. * Evolution of Left-Wing Voices : Higgins discusses how prominent left-wing journalists like Glenn Greenwald and Matt Taibbi have shifted their political positioning over time, with their audience and platform choices moving increasingly rightward. He argues this shift “coincided” (LOL) with opportunities and financial support from right-wing tech platforms. * The Rumble Example : Higgins points to Rumble (a conservative YouTube alternative backed by Peter Thiel) hiring Glenn Greenwald as a concrete example of how tech billionaires have influenced media voices. He sees this as a "smoking gun" of how financial relationships can shape media alignment. * Complex Media Ownership : The discussion highlights the nuanced relationship between media ownership and editorial independence. While Higgins critiques certain ownership patterns, he acknowledges that journalists can maintain independence even within organizations owned by billionaires (citing examples from The Washington Post and other mainstream outlets). * Impact on Alternative Media : Higgins argues there's been a broader "takeover of alternative media" by tech billionaires, but he's careful to frame this not as a conspiracy but rather as a confluence of factors involving tech industry resentment of critical media coverage, financial opportunities, and changing political alignments. Eoin Higgins is a journalist and historian from New England. His work has appeared in many publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Intercept, The New Republic, The Nation, Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR), Common Dreams, The Outline, Splinter, Deadspin, and many others. Additionally he writes for Morning Brew’s tech newsletter, IT Brew, with an audience of nearly 100,000. He can be found at his Twitter account (@eoinhiggins_, nearly 80,000 followers), where he engages regularly with a large audience on tech and U.S. and world politics. Comedian Craig Shoemaker returns to the show and they open by talking about why people today are “poorwashing”, why bikers & surfers insist on wearing all black, and compare their fathers parenting styles. Next, Jason “Mayhem” Miller reads the news including stories about a dying husband attempting to kill his wife twice because he didn’t want to leave her alone, a woman was fired for returning from maternity leave pregnant again, and Russia fining Google two undecillion rubles for blocking pro-Russian channels on YouTube. Then, journalist & author Glenn Greenwald joins the show to talk about the fight to keep the internet free, how most disinformation comes from the corporate media, Jeff Bezos’ decision for the Washington Post not to endorse presidential candidates, and his coverage of the Hunter Biden laptop story. Dr. Jordan B Peterson sits down with author, journalist, and political commentator Glenn Greenwald. They discuss the war on information: how social moralism, religious rhetoric, conceptual safety, and false compassion have been used and propagandized to reshape the western world into a good versus bad, red versus blue polarity. They also explore the human need for meta narratives, the basis of morality, and the case for God in a world that offers nihilism. Glenn Greenwald is a journalist, author, and former constitutional law attorney. His original hit blog was a springboard into writing for Salon and the Guardian with a focus on national security issues. In 2013, he published the now iconic Snowden documents detailing global government surveillance by the U.S. and British governments. In 2019 Greenwald again broke leaked documents, this time for “Operation Car Wash,” which shone a spotlight on the corruption of the Brazilian judicial system. He would later detail his work in a series of books such as Securing Democracy: My Fight for Press Freedom and Justice in Brazil and No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State. - Links - For Glenn Greenwald: On X https://twitter.com/ggreenwald?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor Watch System Update on youtube https://www.youtube.com/@GlennGreenwald

Click here for the full episode, including the extended interview with Glenn Greenwald on Jan 6, Ukraine, and Biden’s failures. There’s a whole lot of terrible stuff going on which means Glenn Greenwald has a whole lot to say: •Biden’s failure at the Summit of the Americas: Latin American leaders are boycotting Biden’s summit because he refused to invite the dictatorships of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. Meanwhile, Biden’s packing for his big trip to the dictatorship of Saudi Arabia… •Jan 6 in Prime Time: “I don’t think dramatizing this three-hour protest from 18 months ago will do very much at all other than underscore the fact that this is the only strategy the Democrats have.” •More Russiagate developments: “When I heard that first ad where Hillary Clinton had that sinister music playing and said, ‘What is this relationship between Donald Trump and the Russians?’ to me it just immediately sounded like the kind of McCarthyite toxicity I had spent many decades abhorring.” Subscribe to hear the full interview with Glenn where we deep dive on January 6, play Trump vs Bernie vs Chomsky, and hear about Glenn’s animal shelter run by unhoused people in Rio. The mass shooting in Buffalo, which left 10 people dead, has ignited a debate about the role the “great replacement” conspiracy theory plays in contemporary politics. As many commentators note , the “great replacement” theory not only animates the manifesto of the alleged shooter but also has become, in only a slightly watered down form, a staple of right wing media programs like Tucker Carlson’s show on Fox News. Glenn Greenwald, a contrarian writer on Substack, rushed to Carlson’s defense in a lengthy post . First noting, correctly, that shooters have many different ideologies, Greenwald goes on to downplay Carlson’s well-documented history of racism . According to Greenwald, “Carlson believes … that the proper citizenry of the United States is multi-racial and that Black Americans and Latin Americans and Asian-Americans are every bit as much U.S. citizens, with all of the same claims to rights and protections, as every other American citizen.” Is Tucker Carlson really as enlightened as Greenwald believes? To take this up, I spoke with Eoin Higgins of The Flashpoint newsletter, who has written multiple times about Greenwald’s habit of acting as Carlson’s pro bono mouthpiece.
