  • Chris Sanders: Why The Wild Robot is the perfect children's fable for our time
    Q with Tom Power

When the filmmaker and animator Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon) decided to adapt Peter Brown’s kids’ book “The Wild Robot” for the screen, he threw a lot of modern animation conventions out the window. Chris decided to use hand-painted images instead of CGI and he centered the story on motherhood when mothers are mostly absent in kids’ movies. Now, “The Wild Robot” is nominated for three Oscars. Chris joins guest host Gill Deacon to tell us more about the film and how he made it.

  • The Wild Robot with Chris Sanders
    Script Apart with Al Horner

The climate crisis is here and over the last few years, a question has loomed: how will Hollywood respond? Can blockbuster movies be a tool for mobilising audiences into action as global temperatures rise, fires rage and climate denialism continues to spread? Maybe in decades to come, The Wild Robot – a film by my guest today, Chris Sanders – will be looked back upon alongside Pixar's Wall-E as one of the first indicators of mainstream moviemaking’s processing of and pushback against the weather emergencies coming our way. The film – a stunning, Miyazaki-inspired animation about a robot washed ashore on a nature-abundant island, in an America devastated by unspecified ecological disasters – acknowledges what awaits if carbon emissions aren’t curbed head on, instead of alluding to it, like in other blockbusters.  It’s a deeply moving tale that features the voice talents of Lupita Nyong'o as Roz – an android who learns to love through foster care. After an accident, she becomes the guardian of an infant goose named Brightbill, voiced by Kit Connor. Brightbill has to learn how to fly in time to migrate to warmer climes, before the brutal winter turns the island into a scarcely survivable tundra of sorts. In the spoiler conversation you’re about to hear, Chris reveals what the phrases “kindness is a survival skill” and “exceed your programming” – two mantras that informed the film’s creation – mean to him. We get into the truth behind Universal Dynamics, the shadowy company that created Roz. And you’ll also hear a deeply moving story about Chris’s mother and the regret he’s carried with him about their relationship, that influenced one of the key lines in the movie. • Now and Ben: Chris Sanders on The Wild Robot, hand drawn animation vs. CG, and Lilo & Stitch
    Kermode & Mayo’s Take

In today’s Now & Ben drop, Ben sits down with Chris Sanders—director of the Oscar-nominated animation ‘The Wild Robot’. With a stellar career behind the drawing board that’s taken him from Disney to DreamWorks, he’s the man behind ‘How To Train Your Dragon’, ‘The Croods’ and ‘Lilo and Stich’—so Ben had plenty to quiz him on. ‘The Wild Robot’ takes us on an unexpected adventure through nature with Roz, a human assistance robot who finds herself shipwrecked on an uninhabited island. Uninhabited, that is, by humans—but she soon discovers a host of animal companions, including an orphaned gosling who needs her help. Becoming the adopted mother of this strange creature is a challenge that her programming hasn’t prepared her for. Ben & Chris chat about the film’s beautiful blend of hand-drawn and CG animation, why movie robots can teach us so much about being human, and what it’s like to be beloved to a generation of Disney kids as the voice of Stitch. Listen out for more of Ben’s conversations with cinema’s most exciting creative talents dropping into the feed every ‘Now and Ben’… Learn more about your ad choices. • From Ancient Tomb Traps To Modern-Day Honeypots | Intrusion Detection And Deception: The Role Of Honey Pots And Human Nature In Cybersecurity Education | Redefining Security With Assistant Professor C. Jordan Howell, Author Chris Sanders, And Student Wi
    The ITSPmagazine Podcast

It's easy to get sucked into the world of technology, often forgetting that there are humans behind the keyboards creating the technology. There's a program out of Texas changing this reality by using a book on deception and honeypots to study cyber attacker behavior. When I saw this post (https://twitter.com/Dr_Cybercrime/status/1462506991012786190/), I knew immediately I wanted to learn more about how a practitioner's book could be used  to change how we teach the next generation of cybersecurity practitioners - blue teams, red teams, and purple teams alike. During this conversation we get to hear from a practitioner/author, a professor, and a student. We look back to ancient Egyptian tomb-protection practices and work our way to a future where we keep a close eye on the humans with technology. Yes, even though we continue to throw all sorts of technology at the problems we face (yep, the same ones we humans have created), the human is still at the center of these scenarios. As with most things, there's no single easy answer to a problem. This remains true here in this conversation as we ended up talking about the ethical lines drawn around how and where we can study the how/when/why people (bad actors) act when presented with a a variety of opportunities to take advantage of a situation. Is it OK to track bad actors and their behavior? How far can that be taken? Can we do like the ancient Egyptians and lock someone in our cyber tomb if we catch them in a place they shouldn't be? Regardless of your position on this matter, we bring this episode to you "em hotep." ____________________________ Guests C. What Do We Know?

Chris is a songwriter, performer and entrepreneur who has recently had huge success with his children’s books and songs.  Having grown up in England, Chris moved to New Zealand with his family when he was a teenager and soon immersed himself in kiwi life.  He found his way into music almost by accident and before long he was performing regularly at numerous functions, weddings and bars.  In 2007 he released an album of original songs and as he prepared his follow up album, he wrote a song for his daughter called Angel Star.  This sparked an idea and Chris decided to release the song as a children’s book and CD.  The success that followed caught him by surprise and he has now released four books: ‘Angel Star’, ‘Call For The Ambulance’, ‘These Memories Make You And Me’ and ‘The Lonely Book’.  We had a great time hanging out and chatting.  Get it in your ears!
