Writer Amy Tan is perhaps best known for her many novels including The Joy Luck Club and The Bonesetter's Daughter , exploring themes of identity, family, and the immigrant experience. Her newest book, however, explores something rather different. The Backyard Bird Chronicles is a collection of nature writing and sketching focuses on the many avian visitors to Amy's California backyard over a period of several years. The book was published in 2024, bit more recently Amy is the subject of an upcoming Birding magazine interview and The Backyard Bird Chronicles was recently reviewed in the magazine as well. She joins us to talk backyard birding and finding community among the birds and her nature sketching peers. Also, does a recent Salon commentary suggests a return to the "birders are weird" genre of writing ? Like others, author Amy Tan was becoming discouraged by a world filled with fear and strife. She turned to nature for relief, specifically the birds that visited her backyard. “All About Books” host Pat Leach talked with the author of the “Joy Luck Club” about her new book, “The Backyard Bird Chronicles” written and illustrated by Amy Tan
This week we spoke with author Amy Tan about her most recent best-seller, The Backyard Bird Chronicles, a fascinating immersion into nature, the world of birds and her dedication to drawing them. In 2016 during a time of overt racism, especially towards Asian Americans, Amy decided to dive into nature journaling. There she discovered a fascination for birds and approached this world as a novelist, these were her characters. When she drew a bird she imagined she was the bird- trying to understand its intentions. We talked to Amy about this discovery of her characters and how they all bring their unique personalities to her backyard bird cafe. The result of her approach leads us on a magical journey. This is a delightful hour for birders and bird lovers as well as those who simply want to learn more about our flying feathered friends.
Lyme disease keeps her from driving, but the beloved author of The Joy Luck Club relishes the wonder of nature right at home. Amy Tan's insights will help you see your back yard, whatever its size, in a whole new light. Tune in as she describes the animal life in her yard—hummingbirds, owls, finches, squirrels, and even rats—as if they were players on the stage of a great opera.
