Already on 3 episodes across 3 shows — and counting.
This week's fucked up story is about trauma, addiction, and recovery. Sean Young is a combat veteran, has enough ex-wives that I lost count during the episode, sports a beard that's longer than Dan and Scott's combined, and hosts two podcasts (Recover Out Loud and Beyond the Veil). If you noticed this episode is longer than recent releases, go back and read that sentence again. Do you think we could cover that in 55 minutes? And do you think we wanted to? I only ended it because Producer Dan was one question away from asking Sean if he could leave to be Sean's co-host. Sean was inspired to join the Army because of 9/11. He admitted to that kind of sheepishly, but it was true. He was only in 7th grade in 2001 and was naive like any kid of that age. By the time he actually had to make a choice, he'd decided his true calling was to be a pastor. He told Dad about that plan and it was a no-go. They had a falling out and Sean enlisted that day. The Army was great for Sean - for a minute. He got to leave his small town, he thrived in Basic Training, and he even got to jump out of airplanes. He was (and is) afraid of heights, but fuck it. Why the hell wouldn't he jump out of a perfectly good plane? It was a hell of a rush. Sean's first deployment sent him to Italy. He was eighteen years old, on his own for the first time, and was able to legally drink. That is where this story starts to take a turn. From there he drinks and drinks some more, marries and marries some more, and in between he fought against the Taliban. He didn't come out unscathed. Sean is finally in a good spot in life and is out there helping others in his Recover Out Loud podcast. Settle in Terrible Listeners, today's episode is going to be Positively Terrible. Follow the @SolfatePod show on Twitter for updates. Thanks for listening frens :) Notes from the show The creator and lead developer of Solang, Sean Young , a compiler that allow developers to write Solana programs (aka smart contracts) in the Solidity programming language. This has been a multi year effort to allow existing Solidity developers, like all those existing in the Ethereum ecosystem, to use their existing language knowledge to write Solidity smart contracts on the Solana blockchain. Sean describes how he started his developer journey in the blockchain space, starting as writing his own compiler for the Solidity programming language for a EVM compatible blockchain for the purpose of processing traditional documents. Sean began hitting roadblocks when he was trying to add new features into the Solidity language, which is effectively only used for Ethereum and EVM compatible blockchains and maintained by the Ethereum community. As a general overview, Sean describes how a compiler actually works. Including how compilers like Solang and even native Solana uses LLVM toolkit (Low Level Virtual Machine) to maximize compatibility for multiple programming languages. Words and acronyms used throughout the episode solidity - A statically-typed curly-braces programming language designed for developing smart contracts that run on Ethereum and most EVM compatible blockchains. EVM - the Ethereum Virtual Machine - essentially the portion of any Ethereum based blockchain that actually runs/executes smart contracts written in the Solidity programming language EIP - Ethereum Improvement Proposals - standards specifying potential new features or processes for Ethereum WASM - Web Assembly - is a binary instruction format for a stack-based virtual machine LLVM - Low Level Virtual Machine - a set of compiler and toolchain technologies that can be used to develop a frontend for any programming language and a backend for any instruction set architecture. Solana specific terms (or at least common in the Solana ecosystem): BPF - Berkeley Packet Filter - a technology used in certain computer operating systems for programs that need to, among other things, analyze network traffic. SBF (aka SBPF) - Solana Berkeley Packet Filter - this is a custom implementation of BPF with tweaks for the Solana runtime and SVM SVM - Solana Virtual Machine - the portion of the Solana runtime that actually runs/executes code on the Solana blockchain IDL - Interface Definition Language - generic term for a language that lets a program or object written in one language communicate with another program written in an unknown language Find Sean and Solang online Follow Sean on twitter Solang's documentation Solang getting started guide Follow us around Nick twitter: @nickfrosty github: github.com/nickfrosty website: https://nick.af James twitter: @jamesrp13 github: github.com/jamesrp13 Solfate Podcast twitter: @SolfatePod more podcast episodes: solfate.com/podcast
On May 5th 2023 I was invited, along with 2 other mental health podcasters; Chris Milson of The Voice for the Voiceless Podcast and Derick Fields of Play the Tape Podcast. In this 2 hour summit we each share portions of our story, speak about men's mental health, and stigmas surrounding Men's Mental Health. We speak about how to improve Men's Mental Health while not taking away from Women's Mental Health. This Summit was a ton of fun and I am glad that I had the opportunity to participate.
That's everywhere Sean Young has guested so far.
