The other week, the director Greta Gerwig sat at my table, describing the unique experience of working with Saoirse Ronan — ‘Ruthie, you have to meet her.’ In a way, I feel like I’ve already met Saoirse through the intimacy of her award-winning performances in 'Atonement', 'Lady Bird' and 'Brooklyn', and her forthright interviews. Now, the three of us are here together at The River Cafe in person — Saoirse, Greta and I. We’re talking about food and cooking, Ireland, Saoirse’s garden, learning to eat spaghetti and much, much more. Ruthie's Table 4 is made in partnership with Me+Em. " The Outrun " had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where it received high praise for Saoirse Ronan's performance as a young woman recently out of rehab for alcoholism who returns home to the Orkney Islands in Scotland. Directed by Nora Fingscheidt from a screenplay she co-wrote with Amy Liptrot, the independent film has received significant attention for Ronan's emotionally raw performance, which has already garnered her nominations from the Gotham and British Independent Film Awards for Best Lead Performance. Ronan was kind enough to spend a few minutes speaking with us about her work as a star and producer on the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film from Sony Pictures Classics, which is up for your consideration in all eligible categories at the 97th Academy Awards, including Best Actress. " Blitz " had its world premiere at the 2024 London Film Festival, where it received strong reviews for director Steve McQueen's vision for WWII London during the Blitzkrieg and the performances from Academy Award-nominee Saoirse Ronan and newcomer Elliott Heffernan. Ronan and Heffernan were both kind enough to spend some time talking with me about their experiences working on the film. I also interviewed the Supersiving Sound Editors & Re-Recording Mixers Paul Cotterall & James Harrison, the Production Sound Mixer John Casali, and Visual Effects Supervisor Andrew Whitehurst, while Dan Bayer interviewed Production Designer Adam Stockhausen and the film's editor, Peter Sciberras. It's another jam-packed banger on the Empire Podcast this week, folks, as Chris Hewitt sits down for a triple whammy of interviews. First, there's Saoirse Ronan, star/producer of affecting drama The Outrun, and her co-star Paapa Essiedu, who talk about bonding, improvisation, and shooting on location. [19:13 - 33:45 approx] Then, there's Josh Greenbaum, director of Will & Harper, the excellent documentary that follows Will Ferrell and his writer friend of three decades, Harper Steele, on a cross-country road trip in the aftermath of Harper's recent transition to living as a woman. [54:27 - 1:13:03 approx] And finally, there's a big chunk of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice spoiler special goodness with that film's writers and executive producers, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. [1:40:01 - 1:55:27 approx] Either side of those, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer to discuss directors whose careers have received a boost from working in the MCU, take a look at the week's movie news (this was recorded before the sad news of the death of Dame Maggie Smith), and review Will & Harper, Wolfs, The Outrun, and Megalopolis, a review so immense it has added ballast in the form of Alex Godfrey. Oh, and the team discover Bump Juice. To find out what it is, listen on. Enjoy.

After years and years of nodunnits - Does that work? Probably not, let's move on - it seems as if there are more and more comedy crime capers coming out, with See How They Run the latest whodunnit to hit cinemas. This one has an incredible cast, including Saoirse Ronan and Sam Rockwell (who you'll hear from today), as well as Adrien Brody, Ruth Wilson, Reece Shearsmith, David Oyelowo, Charlie Cooper, Tim Key and more. Plus! It's directed by This Country veteran Tom George, it's set in the 1950s and looks absolutely gorgeous. Ronan and Rockwell are both on fine form in these interviews, so listen up, and be sure to keep an ear out for clues - and lassos, amazingly.
This week we were lucky enough to be joined by Dominic Cooke who directed the critically acclaimed movie ‘The Courier’ which starred Benedict Cumberbatch. Dominic also stepped in to direct ‘On Chesil Beach’ a romantic period piece that stars Saoirse Ronan and Billy Howle, when Sam Mendes had to drop out of directing the film. We cover so much in this interview, covering topics from the challenges he faced transitioning from being a theatre director to a film director, how he likes to rehearse with his actors, what it was like to direct and work with actors such Benedict Cumberbatch, Saoirse Ronan and Billy Howle, as well as his upcoming project which will be a film adaptation of a musical theatre play that he directed. We had so much recording this episode and hope you guys enjoy it too, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the episode. 🎧 Full episode available to listen & download now: https://www.theflickerspodcast.com/ 📸 INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/flickerspodcast/ 🐦 TWITTER: https://twitter.com/flickerspodcast?lang=en Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheFlickersPodcast/ Support the podcast and subscribe to our Patreon below: https://www.patreon.com/TheFlickers To sign up to Buzzsprout and receive a $20 gift card click the link below: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=1744007 Support the show

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today we celebrate a young actress whose Oscar nominations are outmatched only by her B-Sides! It’s Saoirse Ronan time! The esteemed Bill Graham of The Film Stage Show joins us to discuss the Bronx-born, Ireland-raised starlet. B-Sides include Peter Weir’s The Way Back, Andrew Niccol’s The Host, Neil Jordan’s Byzantium, and Dominic Cooke’s On Chesil Beach. We dive into the historical accuracies and inaccuracies of The Way Back, the similarities between The Host and The Twilight Saga, the slightly immortality-positive POV of Byzantium, the narrative structure of On Chesil Beach and Ronan’s penchant for making movies based on books! Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide. Also enter our giveaways, get access to our private Slack channel, and support new episodes by becoming a Patreon contributor.
