- Episode 1 - The Foundations of Coercive Control with Michael Lee
In a world where coercive control can creep in unnoticed, your host, Michael Lee (NCACIA) uncovers the chilling transformation of Patty Hearst from privileged heiress to bank robber. How does someone with every opportunity fall into a life of crime? This episode dives deep into the psychological mechanisms of manipulation, revealing the subtle ways autonomy is gradually surrendered until freedom feels like a distant memory. You'll discover the alarming truth behind coercive control—how it starts with seemingly harmless compromises that erode your sense of self, leading to a life dictated by someone else’s desires. Michael shares poignant stories, including that of Elizabeth Fritzl, whose harrowing experience serves as a stark illustration of the human brain's capacity to adapt to even the most unimaginable situations. Learn how small decisions can create a slippery slope to captivity, and what that means for those caught in its grasp. We break down key psychological concepts, including the 'foot in the door' effect and how community belonging can mask manipulation. Michael explains why victims often struggle to recognize their circumstances, and why outsiders find it difficult to understand the dynamics at play. This episode is not just about the stories of individuals; it’s a wake-up call for anyone who values their autonomy and relationships. The stakes are high—if you don’t understand the signs of coercive control, you risk losing your freedom before you even realize it. As Michael articulates, the gradual nature of control rarely feels like imprisonment; it feels like adaptation. This is essential listening for anyone navigating relationships, whether personal or professional, as it sheds light on the darker sides of influence and dependency. Perfect for those seeking to recognize the signs of manipulation, this episode promises to inform and inspire. Tune in to learn how to reclaim your autonomy and safeguard your relationships against unseen forces. - Reaching Out with Michael Lee
This week we have the absolute pleasure to hear from Michael Lee (he/him)! Michael grew up in a military family, which meant that he was bopping around the literal globe every few years. He describes what that meant for him in terms of his coming out journey -- including certain advantageous cultural norms that may have helped confirm he was not destined to be with a woman. One of the most fascinating themes of Michael's story that popped up more than once was the innate need to observe how people in his life reacted towards people or characters that were perceived to be gay from a very young age. This was done, as he describes, as a way to measure the safety of certain situations because he knew deep down that those reactions would eventually be directed at him. This part of the discussion was so, so good and I think that it will resonate with lots of queer people -- regardless of where they reside under the LGBTQ+ umbrella. Michael also touches on many other topics including how the movie RENT changed his perspective of what being gay and being queer could mean, how not resembling the masculine and superhero-like stereotype of what a black man "should" be impacted him, what his favorite dating app is, and much more. He wraps all of this up beautifully at the end by talking about how important showing up authentically at all times in his life is to him. It was a wonderful reminder to live authentically and also a nice little motivational kick in the ass for myself to be honest. I'm so excited to share his story with you!
