Follow Jonathan Kay— it's freeEarlier this month, the federal Canadian government announced it would dissolve the offices of two anti-hate envoys: one for combatting antisemitism, and the other for combatting Islamophobia. In their place, the Heritage ministry said it would fold both into a new advisory council on equal rights reporting to the minister of cultural identity. If you ask Jonathan Kay, an editor at Quillette and former columnist with The CJN, this is a good idea. It scraps offices—and excessive budgets—who were never equal to begin with, owing to the fact that only two minorities were represented. (What, no Special Envoy on Combatting Anti-Hindu Racism?) Further, Kay argues, these posts were vestiges of an old political world, the Justin Trudeau era of national repentance and bemoaning so-called "Canada" as nation founded upon racism and genocide. After the re-election of U.S. President Donald Trump, nationalism and civic pride have soared to new heights—and with it, a newfound sense of unity against a greater enemy. Kay digs into the deep political history behind the rise and fall of anti-hate special envoys in the latest episode of The Jewish Angle with Phoebe Maltz Bovy. I first became aware of Jonathan Kay through his writing for the online magazine, Quillette . And for full disclosure, I got to know him better because he is one of their editors, and he has edited several of my own pieces for that magazine. Before that, however, I had been a fan of his writing, and was happy to be able to have an extended conversation with him about writing, journalism, false news, and politics, to name a few of the topics we discussed. Our dialogue occurred shortly after the appearance of a comprehensive 15,000 word piece of investigative journalism piece by Kay about a supposed organized sex-ring in the Psychology Department at McMaster University in Canada. Outrageous claims had surfaced, which ignited the university, and the local media, destroying the careers of various faculty and others, all of which eventually turned out to be false. Kay carefully explored how the original story developed, what factors prompted the University to act, and how local media played up the salacious claims without much investigation. It was a typical example of how false news can propagate, and also an indictment of the way Universities handle such claims, and local media may promote them. The appearance of this story gave us the opportunity to talk about the state of journalism in general. Jonathan has had a unique career and background, which made him a particularly interesting dialogue partner about this issue. He actually was educated as a metallurgical engineer, and following that he pursued a law degree at Yale University, and was a tax lawyer before eventually becoming disenchanted and deciding to pursue a career in writing and journalism. He also defies easy labelling. While he was a founding editor of the conservative Canadian newspaper The National Post, he also helped Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau write his memoirs. It is Jonathan’s non-ideological bent, perhaps due to his early training as a scientist and engineer that makes his perspective on today’s news so refreshing. We discussed his own background, what got him into writing, his experiences, and stories including the recent claimed Indigenous Residential School scandal in Canada, and the controversy surrounding the naming of the James Webb Space Telescope in the U.S. When I contacted Jon this week to let him know the podcast is coming out, I learned that he had just completed a lengthy investigative piece about University of New Hampshire astrophysicist/gender studies social justice warrior Chanda Prescod Weinstein who, in the process of claiming victimization for herself and others, has apparently been bullying, harassing, and intimidating a host of others online, leading to complaints recently being filed at her institution. It coincidentally just came out yesterday, so this podcast is particularly timely. I hope you enjoy the discussion as much as I enjoyed talking to this fascinating man. In today’s episode, host Tom Butta interviews Jonathan Kay, the Founder & CEO of Apptopia, in a discussion that covers past and current trends in the app market, the changing landscape of app usage, and how we are shifting towards better integrated design and functionality. Apptopia is a web-based market data and intelligence solution for mobile application developers which was founded back in 2011. Tom and Jonathan also explore the concept of mega apps, where brands consolidate multiple apps into one platform. While this approach allows brands to provide a more streamlined and convenient user experience, there are also times when it might be impossible to serve each of your unique customer profiles within one singular app. The interview further delves into how the economy impacts the mobile space, with Jonathan highlighting the trends observed in the travel, entertainment, and retail sectors. The results might be surprising as some key players have actually increased their usage and revenues during times of limited spending. Jonathan emphasizes the importance of brand loyalty and quality in a market driven by price-conscious consumers. — Guest Bio Jonathan Kay is the Co-Founder and CEO of Apptopia, the app data insights and intelligence company, with clients including Google, Zoom, Visa and NBC. A mobile pioneer, Kay entered the market in 2011 to add transparency to the mobile ecosystem through modeled data estimates, and level the playing field. Starting Apptopia before there were even 100,000 different apps out in the market, Jonathan quickly saw that the best way for someone to differentiate themselves from the noise was through data. Apptopia’s most recent funding round came in 2021 when they secured their $20M Series C led by ABS Capital Partners. — Guest Quote “People now have more control over their data, and I think you're gonna see it get even more personalized because at the end of the day, it's just better for you. And I think once people just get more comfortable with it through repetitive, redundant education, they'll realize that more often than not, it provides you with a better experience.” - Jonathan Kay — Time Stamps *(01:11) Jonathan and Apptopia's background *(03:39) How the App landscape has changed since 2011 *(04:45) What data signals you should be watching out for *(08:05) Deep dive on how data is gathered and analyzed *(10:38) One App to rule them all? Editor, journalist and podcaster Jonathan Kay is the author of several books, has worked as an editor and columnist at the Canadian newspaper The National Post and is currently the Canadian editor of Quillette , a digital publication founded in 2015 as a haven for what Jonathan has called "ideological refugees. In this interview, he talks with Meghan about a range of topics, including a question Meghan has been pondering a lot lately: What is a conservative? Though you wouldn't necessarily know it from his work over the last several years, Jonathan has spent much of his life identifying as a conservative. (His mother, the columnist Barbara Kay, has been a high profile conservative figure in Canada for decades.) He talked about what terms like "conservative" and "liberal" even mean in the post-Trump era, why he thinks political correctness hurts people on the left far more on the right and why he's losing interest in culture war topics and would rather focus on subjects like ancient history. Most of all, he talks about why it's time for "heterodox" thinkers to stop obsessing about culture war issues and pursue other interests. Guest Bio: Jonathan Kay is Canadian Editor of Quillette , a TedX speaker, an op-ed writer at National Post , and co-host of the Quillette podcast. His freelance work has appeared recently in The Wall Street Journal , Washington Post , Gotham , Canadian Jewish News , and other publications. Kay's books include Among The Truthers (2011), Legacy: How French Canadians Shaped North America (2016), Your Move: What Board Games Teach Us About Life (2019), Panics and Persecutions (2020), and Magic In The Dark: One Family's Century Of Adventures In The Movie Business (2022). The legacy media abandoned all journalistic ethics when it came to covering the Freedom Convoy. There was no honest reporting – just bad faith smears, politically-motivated character assassinations and overly hyperbolic accusations of insurrection and treason. Why did this happen? On today’s episode of the Candice Malcolm Show, Candice is joined by author and journalist Jonathan Kay. Kay is no conservative, he has progressive sensibilities and even worked with Justin Trudeau to help launch his career as Prime Minister. But Kay is a contrarian who is incredibly critical of the legacy media and the insidious cancel culture-driven ‘woke’ left. They discuss the truckers, the dishonest media, vaccine mandates and lockdowns, Justin Trudeau and the way he’s changed since becoming Prime Minister, and how to reform the political left. My guest today is Canadian journalist Mr. Jonathan Kay. Jonathan was the editor-in-chief of The Walrus (2014–2017) and is presently a senior editor of Quillette , an online magazine focused on long-form analysis and cultural commentary. Jon currently hosts the Quillette podcast and previously co-hosted a podcast with Dr. Debra Soh entitled, Wrongspeak. As a pages editor, columnist, and blogger, Jonathan also previously worked for the National Post . He continues to contribute to the newspaper on a freelance basis. He is also a book author and editor, a public speaker, and a regular contributor to Commentary and the New York Post. Jonathan and I discuss his career in media and how he has watched the landscape shift over time. We discuss the evolution, or devolution, of media, political correctness, the blurring lines between media and activism, and the crowdsourcing of censorship. We also address the attempt to have Jon ' de-platformed ' from this podcast by an activist who sought to discredit him as a "rabid" transphobe. It was a great conversation. Despite Jon's suspect Twitter game, he is articulate, thoughtful, funny, empathetic, and engaging. Editors note: Jon's PCR test, taken just before the interview, came up negative for rabies. Enjoy.
