House music at its best! Let Dave Baker take you on a journey of discovery and aural pleasure as he brings you the hottest and freshest funky, deep and tech house releases every week. This week we take a break from the norm and look back at some of those tracks released this year that never made it into the weekly episodes - the missing gems so to speak - featuring some high charting tunes and a few personal faves that were hidden away. In the mix we’re jamming with Fisher remixing a Bob Marley classic; we go ‘Deep Inside’ AYYBO’s tune released back in March; Idris Elba blows his trumpet; and we have a couple of white label remixes that haven’t got an official release. Some of these are likely to be on Beatport’s ‘Biggest Sellers’ list at the end of the year so it’s time to catch up on what’s been missed! Please share, rate, review and subscribe wherever you can to help the podcast reach more house music lovers. You can also leave comments for episodes you like on the Hot House Hours Soundcloud page. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, Defected Records presents a series of extra special collaborative releases Together, integrating talent from the label’s storied past and the stars of its future. As part of the series, a certified house classic from the Defected catalogue, Fish Go Deep’s 2005 anthem ‘The Cure & The Cause’ receives two remixes from Idris Elba and Atmos Blaq. After his 2020 Defected debut in collaboration with Inner City, ‘No More Looking Back’, British icon, DJ and actor Idris Elba’s relationship with the label continues to grow since headlining their highly anticipated The Warehouse Project show and Defected’s Miami Music Week showcase in 2023. Now the global A-lister steps up to remix a Defected classic nearly two decades after its original release, Fish Go Deep’s ‘The Cure & The Cause’ features percussive subtleties and instrumental flourishes that seem to ebb and flow around Tracey K’s soulful vocals; Elba takes these celebrated elements and adds a significant Afro electronic flair, with powerful drums and expansive synths building tension to create a defining club cut for the ages. Next up, a champion of electronic music in his native SA, Atmos Blaq infuses ‘The Cure & The Cause’ with a deep, pensive quality achieved through the subtle production work and precise instrumentation we have come to expect from the Soweto born producer.
When Idris and Sabrina Elba, husband and wife, launched their gender-neutral skin-care brand, S’able Labs, in July 2022, it was just ahead of the boom in celebrity beauty launches. The brand had been in development for over a year, born during the height of the Covid-19 era. The impetus was an Instagram Live series the couple started together called "Together Tuesdays," in which they talked about couples. The idea of S’able Labs is that skin care is genderless and something that couples can share. Growing up in Vancouver, Canada and experiencing acne as a teenager, Sabrina Elba became a beauty aficionado from an early period. But the co-founder of S’able Labs said she also struggled as the only Black person in high school and felt the lack of representation in beauty, too. “My relationship with beauty early on felt a lot like an investment on my part into brands that weren't investing in me,” she said. “I had a complete misunderstanding about how to care for melanated skin. But it wasn't only because I wasn't surrounded by people who looked like me, but it was also because the beauty industry didn't cater to people who looked like me.” As her relationship and eventual marriage to Idris Elba blossomed, Sabrina was exposed to a more entrepreneurial culture and mindset, which eventually translated into S’able Labs. Today, the brand is just over 1 year old and sells five products ranging from $28-$50 through its e-commerce site and SpaceNK. Zooming in from Camden, London, joined the Glossy Beauty Podcast to discuss how the Instagram Live series inspired the brand, what it’s like operating a celebrity brand and what it means to be a melanin-inclusive brand.
This video is my response to Idris Elba. While I can understand some of what Idris Elba & John Boyega said about not identifying as a Black actor and questioning directors and typecasting, there was another statement that Elba made that was really problematic: "Racism is very real. But from my perspective, it’s only as powerful as you allow it to be.” #dei #deib #upstander #liesaboutblackpeople #diversityspeaker #blackhistorymonth #blackhistorymonth2023 STAY CONNECTED: Instagram | http://www.instagram.com/omekongo Twitter | http://www.twitter.com/omekongo Facebook | http://www.facebook.com/omekongo Website | http://www.omekongo.com __ Dr. Omékongo Dibinga is the UPstander. The Suicide Squad is shaping up to be as great as Suicide Squad, the original, was terrible. With James Gunn on board and the DC Extended Universe looking to move forward and continue their string of critical and commercial hit movies, the news today is even more exciting. Will Smith is out as Deadshot, which would be a shame - except he’s being replaced with Idris Elba, which immediately raises the excitement level for the Suicide Squad. They deserve a second chance, just as James Gunn does - and there’s a lot of real great story to be mined from the source material. With Gunn directing, Margot Robbie returning as Harley Quinn, and Elba brining his amazing acting chops to the table as Deadshot, this movie could redeem the Squad, the DCEU, and potentially be one of the best comic movies of the next decade.
